  1. Lily is at the vet now - she has been there since 7:25 this morning. I just told my husband to call vet (since I am still crying and can't get through a sentence regarding her without sobbing...) I told him to find out how much it will be to keep her at the 24/7 care at the Univ. of Minnesota. She has already had many blood tests,etc. done we just want to get her diarrhea under control and get her hydrated via glucose drip. I told him to call vet and have her call Univ. with our situation and see how much they will charge. I wish I had known about all the ideas for yogurt, corn syrup, etc. last night I would have tried them. The vet did give me dextrose 5% - only to use if she was EXTREMELY WEAK. WE were to give her the dextrose and then take her to emergency. I know she was weak but she was able to make it across tub to litterbox though I did have to help her get back. Extremely weak doctor said was being unable to even lift her head. I wish I had known about the pedialyte too. I was making his "slurry" (mix of A/D cat food, chicken baby food) with plain warm water. At least with the pedialyte she would have been getting electrolytes. I know the vet said her Albumin (?) is very low too. Anyone know about this?

    I think she has been dealing with worms..even though she has had medication. What does that cause? Our other cat, Otis, who is 7 mos old had worms too but got better with meds.

  2. I am just devistated. My son, pictured with Lily, picked her out when she was just a week or so old. Obviously we waited until she was old enough to come home with us but he would go visit her at his grandmas farm quite often until she did. I didn't realize how attached I had become to Lily too.
    I only pray that the University Vet Center has more advanced thinking that will help her get better. I wish we had given Lili-kins pedialyte last night. And the karo syrup too. Those might have help sustain her better through the night at home here.

  3. Please don't beat yourself up with "what ifs." You are doing all you can to get Lily the best care possible. {{{hugs}}}

  4. Worms can cause problems with absorbing calories and nutrients in the gut; the worms take the food first, which robs the kitten of needed nutrition. In a severe infestation, worms can cause big problems if the kitty doesn't have food coming through the gut; the worms will start attacking the lining of the gut, which makes the kitty less and less able to digest food at all.

    From wikipedia - Serum albumin, often referred to simply as albumin, is the most abundant plasma protein in humans and other mammals. Albumin is essential for maintaining the osmotic pressure needed for proper distribution of body fluids between intravascular compartments and body tissues.

    So, it's not surprising that if the kitty's having difficulty with maintaining hydration and nutrition, that the albumin levels would be low. However, the kitty should be tested for diseases which could be associated with low albumin levels (such as FIP). Definitely ask the vet what could be causing a low albumin level.

  5. One other question I have. When my husband originally brought Lily to the emergency care on Sunday they said that it was a reaction to her shots that she got the previous Tuesday that "triggered" all of thsi and that it "just happens sometimes." Has anyone heard that? That there is something in her DNA/make-up, congential, that when she got her shots it caused her to have all of this happen. I will say it again...I don't understand how a kitten who is fine - gets a shot on Tuesday and then is fighting off death 4-5 days later.

  6. Cupcake, you did everything you could for Lily (she's gorgeous, by the way). If Lily's now at the vet's office, the vet should be properly experienced and equipped to help try to nail down the cause/s for Lily's condition/s. The vet will start out by looking at all the symptoms and measurements (bloodwork, urine, and fecal analysis), and will likely start treating for the most common problems causing such symptoms. If Lily does not respond as expected to treatment, the vet will continue to narrow down the possible causes, through the process of elimination.

    I'm sure the vet is doing everything he or she can to help Lily. Please try to keep your thoughts positive, and focus your thoughts toward her recovery. Are you able to visit her every day, until she's able to come home?

  8. Cupcake, I haven't heard of that possible complication or reaction from injections. What was she given, by way of injection, on Tuesday?

    Posted 3 years ago by anncetera2 #

  9. Hi Ron,I'm glad to see you posting,yes it's the same kind of glucose.

  10. Cupcake, that happened to Taco! He always had a bit of diarrhea, but he went to get his shots and then that night he went WAY downhill, couldn't walk straight anymore, and couldn't hold his diarrhea to make it to the box. It was the reaction to the shots that pushed him over the edge into really needing a lot of help. Hang in there, I hope things start to improve. Keep us updated

  11. {{{hugs for Cupcake and Lily}}}

    As far as money is concerned, I know others on TDK have signed up with ChipIn, which allows friends to give money through PayPal, and I would certainly be happy to help.

    Beyond that, I don't have much advice. Just try to think positively — it's better for your health.

    {{{hugs for Mr. Renee, too}}}

  12. Gini How did you get Taco better and how long did it take?? Did you have him at a vet hospital? Vet said Lily won't eat at all today so they have been force feeding her. Glucose is a bit above normal now so they are giving her just plain saline. The one emergency hospital here you can drop them off at 6:00 pm and then you have to pick them up by 7am the next morning. We live approx. 35 minutes from this hospital. From there we would have to bring her back to the regular vet again when they open at 7a.m. until they close at 7:00pm.
    My husband is working two different jobs right now..both part time. 7am-1pm and 8pm -? So with 3 young kids at home all this shuttling is a challenge but again...I AM MAKING HIM DO THIS. Lily deserves every fighting chance. Vet said she seemed depressed as well. Any idea how to combat that? She is such a sweetie pie...it just kills me to see her going through this.

  13. Catherine...thanks for the suggestion on ChipIn. I will check this out. Hopefully I can help offset some of the costs. It is so hard too..cuz I am an entertainer/clown and I have been asked to work free events like fund raisers for people with cancer, etc. and I do work them. But it is hard for ME to ask people for money. I will post here though...as you all seem to understand how I feel. I take GREAT comfort in that.

  14. Cupcake, all the snuggling you can provide Lily will help. She hasn't been away from her littermates and mama all that long, and now she's spending a lot of time at the vet's office (which is a depressing place to be). Is there any way that Lily could spend evenings at home, instead of at the vet's office? Can you attempt a couple of feedings at night, and one in the morning, before she returns to your regular vet's office?

    (All the travel and time at the vet's is undoubtedly somewhat stressful to Lily.)

    Posted 3 years ago by anncetera2 #

  15. Maybe the vet would let you come by and sit with Lily for a while. That might perk her up and it would save her the stress of traveling.

  16. We tried having Lily home last night. I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could help her but I think she needs the IV. I fed her every two hours last night.

    I was afraid of keeping Lily with me too much last night because I didn't want her to get too cold since she is having trouble regulating her body temp as well. I was told by vet to keep her in her warm spot with the heated water bottles. I did hold her during feedings and talk to her and tell her what a good girl she was for eating even though she was fighting the force feeding.

    It looks like tonight we will be bringing her to the overnight care center where she will continue to get IV. Unfortunately, we will have to pick her up in the a.m. and transport her back to the regular vet for the day because this is just a night-time emergency care center that is closed during the day. My husband refuses to pay for the Univ. which would be more because it would be for a full 24 hurs. I am still checking into it though...

  17. Thanks Catherine..here is the link.

    I need help. Plain fact. My kitten Lily is very sick and needs 24 hour care that I can't provide. I tried to care for her last night, staying up all night, feeding her every 2 hours, warming her heating bottles, etc. She needs more. She needs IV treatment that I can't do at home. She is very critical.
    Please help. Every dollar will help. I am a mom with 4 boys. My youngest is 5 and has cerebral palsy from a stroke in-utero. My 11 year old has ADHD/Aspergers. Because of this I only work part time to make sure they get the therapy they need. Now..I need money I don't have. If you can help please go to this link.

    I will keep you updated on Lily.

  18. Prayers for Lily and CC. Healing white light for Lilly.

  19. Wow. I just checked with the university and it would cost $1,200..just for Lily to stay overnight. We can't afford that. She will go to the overnight care facility where she will be cared for by a certified vet through the night and get her fluids and feedings. Hopefully by morning she will be much improved and will go back to the regular vet for the day for continued fluids and care. I will definitely keep you updated on what I know. Thank you all so much for sharing your knowledge and shoulder to cry on.

  24. Thank you all for your positive thoughts and prayers. This website is amazing. My husband left to go get Lily from the local vet and bring her to the overnight emergency care vet on his way to work. He said he would stop by on his way home and see how she is doing. I hope all goes well with the transfer from clinic to clinic and that she isn't too disrupted with it. I hope she perks up at the emergency vet and begins to eat some on her own. That would make me happy. I know it will be a long process for her recovery but I am willing to do what I can.

    I miss her...her sweet eyes and face. She's a perky little thing when she isn't sick. I miss that.

  25. Prayers for your beautiful Lily. Taco made it through, I am sure Lily will too. You seem as dedicated to her as Gini is to Taco.

  26. Cupcake, I'm sending prayers and healing white light your way. I, too, had a very sick baby, miss Calamity Jane, better known as CJ. She was much like the famous Taco. I kept her alive with love, tears, vet bills, experiments, pain killers, special diets--you name it. She's not a devilish little miracle who had her second birthday October 1!!! At least half-a-dozen vets told me it was hopeless. I still call her CJ the Wonder Kitten...she just wouldn't quit. So have hope!!! Your Cupcake is adorable! And Love and Faith can do miracles. We're behind you 100 percent.
