I'm so sorry to hear about Pete! Hopefully the other two will recover quickly and fully. Have you been able to get them to the vet yet?

They other kittens went into the Vet at 11:00 and they decided to keep them. Ill and low on fluids. He also stated that the one kitten had a bit of a low temp.
Now its actually up to the Humane Society how far therapy can go and how much money they can afford to spend on their care.Posted 3 years ago by riptidefrog #

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Kitten update.
Both remaining kittens are staying with the vet and they are giving antibiotics, subQ fluids and feeding by hand. They have tested the stool and found no parasites. they are also deworming them again and giving meds for diarrhea. The vet doesnt feel good about their chances. She also suggested that this could just be a weak batch of kittens.
I'm going to call again in the morning and get another update.

Oh, TRF, I'm so sorry. You did all you possibly could for little Pete, he knew love and warmth and comfort in your loving care.
Sadly, there is a high death rate for little stray kittens and no one knows, not even vets, why -- it's called fading kitten syndrome, and they think it's as high as 20-40%. It could be associated with what happened to their mum during pregnancy, the food she got, birth trauma, infections during pregnancy, or birth defects, none of which we can do anything about. You did all you could for these babies, no one could have cared more. Everybody is willing these two remaining babies to make a full recovery. Please keep us up to date. {{{HUGS}}}.

I'm so glad to hear the good news! I'm glad the vet is trying whatever works, at this point. Best wishes for these little guys to achieve a quick and full recovery!

Update:
WHen i called the vet today to check in she told me that one kitten seems to be doing well although she is still concerned: stable temp, gaining weight, eating independently. The other kitten, a cute white and gray female is performing spottily: she will have temperature fluctuations, will be inconsistent with her eating, and spends most of the day resting. She did initially have an increase in weight but it ended up going back down although overall her net gain is 1 oz. since she was brought to the vets office.
The vet also told me that their excrement does not smell so bad as before and that the new medication for diarrhea has not really had enough time to take effect properly.
The vet told me that the humane society has to evaluate the situation tomorrow to decide if the kittens will stay in the vet office or will come home with me tomorrow.
Hopefully they will have enough time to give me exhaustive discharge instructions before releasing them to me. I am new to this but i just heard that this particular vets office likes to keep time spent with family members of pets to a 20 minute length per visit. This was evident when i had them seen at the vets office. A tech took the kittens in to be weighed and 5 min later the vet came in and spent literally 30-45 seconds telling me the situation and that i would be contacted if necessary and then sent me on my way.
I do plan on bringing this up and telling her about the time deficit she has with me and that she will need to spend at least the alotted 20 min instructing me on their care while in this state. Hopefully she will comply.
Also a question... does anyone know of a way to override the 2 hour shutoff that heating pads have? i went shopping to find one and all of them had the automatic shutoff feature. There prolly isint a way but i though i might ask just in case anyone has been able to do this.

Thanks for the update, RTF! Glad the two remaining kittens are hanging in there. :)
I don't know of a way to override the 2 hour shutoff on a heating pad. It is probably required as a consumer safety rule to avoid people getting burned by falling asleep on a heating pad. A kitten could also get burned if it spent too much time on a heating pad.
Good luck with the next vet appointment. Stick to your guns on getting all the information you need to properly care for the kittens when they come back to you.

Sorry, RTF, but if you can find an older heating pad, they don't have that automatic shutoff. Also, an electric blanket can work well, but should not be folded; modern electric blankets have a 10 hour shutoff, IIRC.

Drs. Foster and Smith. Electric heating pad for cats. My cats love them. They go up to 102 degrees when the cat is on them, cool down to room temp when there's no weight on them. The $39.99 one has a removeable cover for washing.
We bought one of these when we had a sick cat. We ended up buying more because the healthy cats piled up on the bed and pushed the sick baby out.

If these babies are small, will they register as enough weight to keep the heating pad turned on? (Or is there a 5-lb weight that could be placed on the pad to ensure it stays turned on?)

Update:
I called the vets office around noon to see how the kittens were doing. She told me that the one kitten had a temp of 95 since she came in and today it dropped to 91 and she began agonal breathing. they put her to sleep to end her suffering. rest in peace Sassy.
The other kitten has been doing well and has come home with me. His diarrhea has stopped and he is playing, eating, cleaning himself and all around acting like a kitten again, albeit a tired one.
They currently have me giving some antibiotics, antidiarrhea agent, and a drug to combat coccidia.
I have high hopes for this little guy. he is resting comfortably and eating well. He was given the name of Tommy True at the Humane Society but i have now taken to calling him "Trooper" because of his success.
I asked the vet how old she thinks the kitten is now and she told me that he is about 7-8 weeks now. That means that they were 4-5 weeks when they were dropped off at the humane society. WOW way too early.
As for the question about the heating pad; I could only find one of those heating pads for use on humans. It has 3 heat settings and has an auto turn off after 2 hours. I tried to find one without the outo turn off but none were available. So i have been making sure to turn it off and return it to the low setting. The room he is in is always very warm so i am fairly confident that it will be warm enough for him. I just bought it so he could have a warm place to nap and for my own peace of mind. If i feel he is getting cold i will be calling the Humane society to see if they have a heating pad made for pets that i can use. I think in the future id like to have one for pets handy but as a college student im very broke right now so whatever i can come up with will have to suffice. If i have to ill just turn the heat up in my apt and open the windows in my bedroom.

Prayers that little trooper stays strong and has a chance at a long full life!

I'm so sorry to hear about Sassy. Yes, the kittens were brought to the shelter much too soon; they really do much better and have fewer complications if they aren't surrendered until they're fully weaned and consistently using the litter box (no sooner than 6-7 weeks, most of the time).

I am really bummed that the others couldnt be saved. Knowing that these guys had a poor start, that had nothing to do with me, helps out alot as far as my personal feelings of failure go.
Trooper is doing great. He eats about every time he gets up and he is acting just like a kitten should although he does tend to tire out quickly. His weight is steadily rising as well. I have no scale at home but he feels more solid and his spine is not as prominent as before.
