  1. I have him on clavamox which he has now been on about 1.5weeks and it will run out tonight after his nightly dose. He is taking .5 dropper every 12hrs. We picked him up from the animal shelter and he was sneezing with a watery eye. He got severely worse and has been to the vets 3 times in the lst few weeks, green snot and eye sealed shut. they say its a horrible upper respiratory cold. He ate dry food the first day and we started wet food (every kind possible & warmed)after he stopped eating. I know he cant breathe and and cant smell it & thats why he's not eating but he is soo dehydrated. He has had a SUb-Q under the skin treatment to hydrate him but thats only good for a day. He is getting ulcers on his tongue from the syringe I have been giving him his water through at home. I am desperate and feel awful!!!!! I dont know how to make him better and he is thin as a rail. What do I do!? He was thin to start and now only weighs just under 2lbs. he was 3.3lbs a week ago! Will he ever eat & drink on his own?!!

  2. Hi Machokitty,he needs to go back to the vet and maybe start on different antibiotics. He also needs more subq fluids.
Use a warm washcloth and gently remove the secretions. Also use pedialyte unflavored instead of water,it is only about $2 dollars at the drug store. Keep taking good care of him and he should hopefully recover and will eat normally once he feels better and can smell again.
Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

  3. You need to keep giving him the water, though pedialyte or even gatorade would be even better, if you have it. You could try smearing either a little corn syrup or high-calorie paste Nutrical on the side of his mouth and gums (no big clots, nothing he could choke on). And sounds like you need to get him back to the vet tomorrow, for more Clavamox and more sub-Q fluids. Ask the vet to show you how to give him subQ fluids at home, so you can do it every day if needed. Also, this thread might help: http://www.dailykitten.com/chat/topic/10427. Keep us posted on your baby!

  4. The poster on that thread was feeling very low at times but her baby recovered well!

  5. I did buy pedialyte unflavored. For being so sick he sure is a fighter! I can feel every bone in his body he is so thin and dehydrated but he still fights me so hard with the syringe. Is there an easy way to do it? He clinches his teeth. How many times a day should I be giving him the pedialyte? Wet food? I did give him that pedialyte last night and he had diahrea this am. Not sure if it was from that but he hasnt had anything else in him so just assuming. I have wet food in a syringe also (can of a/d from the vet) we just got one half of a syringe down him for the first time tonight. His green snot has cleared but he still has trouble breathing and sleeps with his head up. He wakes up during the night and meows, I dont know what to do for him, he pees in my bed so I cant keep him in there with me. I feel like such a bad mom =( Is there a maximum of antibiotics? Seems like alot for his little body on an empty tummy

  6. he needs as much AD as he can tolerate,I would liquify the a/d with the pedialyte and try to give him 10-15ml every 3 hours or so. Since he is so thin it might not be a bad idea to get some KMR and try to get some nutrtion in him that way too.

  7. Your vet will need to evaluate him for continued antibiotics. Has he had any tests run? He needs to be assessed by your vet again, especially with continued dehydration and weight loss. Prayer of strength to you.

  8. Please get your kitty to the vet as soon as possible. In the meantime, liquefy the food & pedialyte and instead of trying to force his mouth open, just put the tip of the syringe up to the teeth at the side of his mouth, behind the long canines. Squeeze gently to get a small amount in between the teeth; wait until he licks it down. Then squeeze a little more. An eyedropper also works well for this.

  9. WOW that is alot! I already do believe he thinks Im the devil for torturing him with wet rags for snot, nose drops and water.. not to mention ear mite treatment for his SUPER infested ears. Im surprised he even lets me hold him still. Where would I find the KMR at? I AM going to make him another appointment for the Sub-Q then also. Its just getting super expensive but I would be mortified if I lost him. My last baby "Nacho," who was always super healthy, was hit by a car less than a month ago. I found this little one in the shelter and fell in love. I thought I would be able to make him better and only want him to have a good healthy life.
He also had lots of flea dirt but was told to wait till he is better before I give him a bath so I dont over-stress the little guy.
I am grateful for any and ALL advice!!
Feeding him is the biggest challenge right now***

  10. You can have the vet teach you how to do the Subcutaneous fluids at home, many of us here have done it, it's not that difficult. The vet can give you a whole IV bag with needles and it is far less costly. Simple instructions and how much to give at home is all you would need.
Please see if you can get him in ASAP in the morning.
Best wishes to you and your baby

  11. If he is infested with fleas and is really little they can be draining him. Are you sure they are mites in his ears and they aren't packed with fleas. I have seen kittens infested with fleas and that can harm them as much as anything else.

  12. The vet said he is covered in flea dirt but didnt see any fleas. Lots of flea poop! I havent seen any either. She gave him a pill and gave me some cream to put between his shoulder blades. They did the ear mite exam and looked under the microscope, it is earmites and his ears are loaded! Doing drops once a week in each ear as prescribed, that vet scooped out a bunch. He doesnt itch his ears anymore they just look super gross & dirty

Posted 11 months ago by MachoKitty #

  13. BTW, you can get KMR at most pet stores.
Maybe others are more experineced; but a few years I took in a rescue that had an ear mite problem. I was instructed to clean out the ears daily. Can someone else give advice on this?

Posted 11 months ago by Tigerlilly #

  14. I'll let my husband do that then! Is it possible to swab too deep and hurt the ear drum like in humans? They are really gross and Ive wanted to a couple times, it seems like I am always torturing him but if needs to be done I most certainly will! ??

Posted 11 months ago by MachoKitty #

  15. Yes, I do think you can go too deep. I remeber when I did it years ago I used a makeup round cotton pad soaked moistened with warm water and really just got in as best I could but clearly not able to reach the ear drum per se because I was not digging in with a pointy object such as a Qtip.

  16. MK I would only clean the outer part of the ear and leave the more thorough cleaning for the vet to do and it is possible to damge the ear.
Of most importance is getting calories into him,if he doesn't get enough calories then he can't get better from this illness. Try to minimize disturbances to him, wrap him in a towel or blanket and dribble the liquified A/D into his mouth. Do your best.
Good luck and thanks for taking such good care of him.

Posted 11 months ago by Buttercup #

  17. I was told you shouldn't swab in a cats ears further than you can see. They are very sensitive and easily hurt. Also in case you don't have a pet store close WalMart also sells milk replacement. It's very inexpensive and comes in a little box like juice (not in the refrigerated section) Good luck. I'm sorry I can't give you more help because it sounds like you sure have your hands full with this poor little baby.

  18. Heheheh torture him so long as he gets better MK! And so lng as he cuddles with you he instictively knows you aren't the devil jsut a pain in the tush hehehe! I am hoping he will be fine, if he is loaded with fea dirt did they do a CBC to check his blood levels and celll counts?

My baby whenI got him was a healthy 8 week old mainecoon, and things were fine and then in july he had a slight heart murmur, august it was more septmeber when he went in to get fixed they did blood work and found him to be anemic with an 8% red blood cell count! He never has shown a single sign he was sick. After much expense on my part my baby is now a little more then 7 months old and healthy and strong as an ox and into and on everything he can and he eat,s and plays hard. He is on a steriod calle dprednizone and on iron supplements. He ahs progressed very well and his blood work conitues to improve he will be going in again in december to get a check up and more blood smears to check his red blood levels and cell counts, if well h will be taken off the prednizone but will be on iron supplements for life!

  19. Macho kitty. please take the above advice. Absolutely, you should only clean the outside part of the ear. But I wonder whether Buttercup's point may be the best of all, your little angel has so much going on right now, that if the ears aren't bothering him , the most important is to keep him warm, hopefully hydrated as best as possible and most importantly to the vet in the morning.
    Please keep us posted.

  20. MK, welcome to TDK, I'm sorry it's under such difficult circumstances. I can't add to the advice you've had here, just wanted to say I'll be thinking of you and the little one today - hope the vet can help some more. What you're doing is incredible, he will thank you for it when he's better! And I'm sorry to hear about the loss of Nacho, must make this all the more heartrending {{hugs}}

  21. You're doing such a good job with this little one MK..you and he just keep fighting! You mentionned sores in his mouth..did your vet check for calicivirus? Pretty common in the little ones; and I think it resolves itself in 2 weeks or so...I hope the vet can help make him more comfortable; hugs to you both for now!

  22. If there's tons of flea dirt but no fleas, that doesn't mean there are no fleas. I strongly recommend immediately buying a 2 lb bag of food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) and using it on the kitten, on any carpeting, upholstered furniture, and mattresses. (Also wash bedding & pillows.) You may be able to find some at a garden center store or nursery, though you'll want to call; also make sure there are no added substances to the DE, like pyrethrins or permetrins; those are toxic to kitties. Don't buy DE that's pool grade; it won't work.

Seriously, the eggs can take up to 2 weeks to hatch. Just because there aren't any fleas right this moment, doesn't mean there aren't fleas tomorrow or the day after. Diatomaceous earth is completely non-toxic, and the safest substance to use for eliminating crawling insects of all kinds.

A couple sources and more information:

    http://www.dirtworks.net/Diatomaceous-Earth.html

    http://www.internet-grocer.net/diatome.htm

Also, has the kitten been wormed? Intestinal parasites can be robbing the kitty of badly-needed nutrients.

    Posted 11 months ago by anncetera2 #

  23. I dont know if he has been wormed, looking through all his vet bills and besides his first vaccinations, neuter & Felv test I dont see any other proceedures before I got him.
I think I will leave his ears alone for now and just continue the drops since they are not bothering him. I am wondering if I should wait to put the flea treatment (Revolution for puppies and kittens) on him now or wait till he gets a little better and after a bath ? The last thing I want to do is irritate little Macho even more.
He isnt doing too well with the syringe, its getting super frustrating I cant get anything in him!! I keep telling him Im only doing it because I care.. just wish he'd listen! Had my friend who is in town for the weekend & worked in a vet clinic come give him that first dose of wet solids last night, doing it on my own this morning was nearly impossible. Trying to burrito him in a towel with one hand so he cant run away and open his lips and squirt it in his mouth with the other. I think more ended up down his neck and on me than anything.
I do have a pet store just down the road and am running to pick up the kitten milk.
    PROGRESS**
He had a semi-solid stool this morning when i went in to wake him up!
Showed interest in water dish! Blew bubbles of spit & wet food goo, from his earlier feeding, out the side of his mouth, lol.. He tried a couple of times to poke his nose in the water but I dont think he got any down. I was just excited he even paid attention to it. No more green snot, still not breathing too well though
Still keeps one eye shut, I clean it with warm wet cotton make-up rounds but it doesnt look like he has anything in it. I think its just irritated.

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice, I am trying everything possible suggested and will keep you updated.!

  24. that's good Danielle, that he paid attention to the water dish. I wouldn't use any Revolution or give a flea bath at this time. I'd wait until he was more stable, eating and drinking and all.
    Good job!

Posted 11 months ago by Buttercup #

  25. Keep up the great work, Danielle! Macho sounds like a little fighter. Give him a chin scritch from me!

  26. For his eye you can make up some camomile tea and bath the eye with it. It's a little messy but you are already dealing with the mess anyway so a little more won't matter. Make a cup of camomile tea, let it cool and then soak a cotton ball or the end of a face cloth and swab his eye. Camomile tea has terrific healing properties in it. Also if you have any food coloring you can put a drop in his water. Kittens can't see water and don't understand what it is so a little food coloring makes it easier for them. Good luck and please keep us posted.

  27. Macho kitty, you are doing an awesome job with your baby. Keep up the good work!
    Continued prayers and well wishes.

  28. GOt some KMR down him, thats probably the easiest ive gotten him to take anything! Started yacking like he was going to vomit every now and then.. dont know what that was about? Getting aother feeding in before bed and another dose of Clav.!
Right eye is really bad! It doesnt look right, he wont open it and when i do to look at it, the whole eye looks black!? Very strange, he wont open it at ALL. I will try the chamomile tea on it, never eard of that before, good to know!
Is the KMR alone okay for now? Thats the only thing that seems managable to him. Doesnt like the a/d wet food one bit!

Posted 11 months ago by MachoKitty #

  29. KMR is good for now,as much as he'll tolerate. Sorry to hear about the eye,has a vet seen it? It might be painful,i don't know. I guess one thing at a time. It's very good that you're getting KMR into him.

Posted 11 months ago by Buttercup #

  30. Machokitty, if his eye is closed, unless it's just gunk sticking it shut, that is a sign that it is painful and the fact that you think it looks black is worrying. I would ring the vet, who might well advise you to bring him in.
