Kitten climbs me!

(10 posts)
  1. Hi guys. I just adopted a 8 week old kitty and named him Loki. Boy is he living up to that name!! He's very lively and likes to climb. Even me! Man, I tell ya, my legs have so many scratch marks on them from him trying to climb me! Normally, I will gently pry him off my (mangled) leg, tell him no, tap him lightly on the nose, and place him across the room on something comfy. I do *not*:

    1. believe in declawing unless medically necessary (ie. Polydactyly)
    2. like using water/spray bottles

    Any other suggestions? TIA!

  2. Welcome to TDK, Luna. My Milo used to climb me, too. He was sick and clingy and would sit and cry at me if I didn't pick him up. And if I wasn't fast enough he would climb straight up my leg to sit on my shoulder.
He eventually stopped, I think my screams of pain scared him :) I wore jeans a lot in the beginning, that helped, too! I didn't really do anything to stop him other than hurry up and pick him up when he was getting ready to jump so he wouldn't hurt me. I did trim his claws regularly and get him several scratching posts to make those claws a little less sharp! You could also get him some of those soft claw things.
Hope little Loki will stop climbing you soon.

  3. Hi Luna! My late cat Bastian used to climb me too when she was a kitten. She grew out of it. Good suggestions from GD.

  4. He's only 8 weeks old. That's what kittens do. That's the only way he has figured out to get up to you. When he is a little older it won't be necessary because by then he will have learned how to jump. Have patience, don't punish him he is not being bad he is doing what comes naturally.

  5. I have good news: you have a normal kitten! When I had my 3 little fosters I had special "armor" I wore before entering their room; they were very thick heavy duty snow woollen knee high socks!! More good news, he'll outgrow this.
    Enjoy your little boy.

  8. Welcome Luna! And isn't Loki the name of the god of destruction? Sounds like you're going to have your hands full!! Enjoy him; you'll miss the days when he doesn't climb up your legs anymore!!

  9. I'd recommend teaching Loki to meow when he wants to be by your face. If he comes to your feet, anticipate that he's going to try to climb you, and pick him up before he decides to do it. If he climbs you, just loudly say "Ow!" then gently remove him and put him down.

If you're standing by a sofa, loveseat, or recliner, have a seat; chances are Loki will climb up the furniture at least partway, instead of climbing you.

Also, I'd highly recommend a very stable cat tree, the tallest you can make or afford. Footprint only needs to be big enough to be stable; height is what you're looking for. Put it somewhere close to where you spend a lot of time.
