  1. My son is working on a project for Pre-Algebra, one of the problems he has to solve is driving us all crazy.

A seven digit number can be determined from the following clues:
The first 3 digits appear in descending order with a sum of 15 and a product of 120.
The final four digits consist of three prime numbers in ascending order surrounding a composite number in the second-to-last position. These four digits have a product of 560. Find the number.

Ok, the first 3 digits we have figured out...654
    6+5+4 = 15 and 6X5X4 = 120 Cool

Problem is the final 4...we can't seem to make it work.

    Help??????

  7. I just figured it out, too. If I wouldn't have had to teach my math classes, I could've done this a little earlier---darn classes! :)

  10. I went to college for secondary education in math, but decided to pursue a career in the financial industry after graduation. Glad to know that my skills are still intact!

  11. JB13, is there a formula you used to calculate the answer?

Posted 3 years ago by Leeny #

  12. No, just trial and error. I don't believe that there would be a formula for this type of question.

  13. You must be good a suduko!

  14. BTW, what is a composite number?

Posted 3 years ago by Leeny #

  15. I do love suduko! Leeny, numbers are either prime (divisible only by 1 and itself) or composite (divisible by at least one other number).

  16. I am a Sudoku ADDICT!!! Not only did I pay for Websudoku (because I prefer the puzzles to be larger when played online), I have a handheld computer one and probably 10 books of puzzles--one of which I carry in my purse at all times. Sure makes an oil change go by faster! I won't even mention the huge pencil sharpener that sits atop my bar at home because I only like really sharp pencils. . .

*muttering because I only got to do 1 puzzle at lunch*

  17. Seriously impressed! :o)

I scraped through my maths exam at age 16, it wasn't compulsory after that, and I swore I'd never touch maths again!!! Of course I use it every day, but I still cannot fathom out long division. My calculator is my friend!

  18. wow...I am really impressed..I got confused and lost reading Chuck's problem, let alone trying to figure it out.

  19. "three prime numbers in ascending order surrounding a composite number in the second-to-last position" this confused us, we were looking for 3 primes and a composite that were all in ascending order..but after going back and reading it again I feel dumb :(
