  1. Whoo hoo! We're going to Thailand at the end of January!
I just had to share with everyone because I'm so excited and a little bit nervous. After months of back and forth of being excited and worrying about money we decided to go for it and booked our tickets last night. We can't technically afford it(going on the credit card) but we just thought, ya know you only live once and this opportunity will never be here again. My partner's mom is teaching at the international school right outside of Bangkok so we'll have a place to stay for FREE and someone to show us around! I never imagined I'd be going somewhere so exotic(it is to me anyway)being someone who's lived within the same 100-150 mile radius of my childhood home my whole life. The only other places I've been outside of the US is Mexico, Dominican Republic and Germany. I'd never imagined I'd be going to southeast Asia.

Aside from my excitment, I do have an opinion question for all of you. What to do with Mogley? We'll be gone for just about 2 weeks. The dogs are going to their normal sitters, a couple that does boarding out of their home. Our options for Mogley are to board him at our vet or ask a friend to stop by and check on him ever other day or so. Would it be less stressful to be at home alone with occasional attention or in boarding where he'd have his own kitty condo(large cage), play time and staff interaction out of his cage daily and feliway dispensed throughout the area?

  2. Wow how exciting!!! I'm so very happy for you!! Please take lots of pictures...As for Mogley, your vet sounds like they has a very nice boarding area..If you don't have someone who can stop by at least once a day, I think I would board him...

  3. Wow, Thailand - that's wonderful! We always had someone come to our house to check on, feed, clean litter box and play with Shaddo and Jiggs when we went away. It seemed better for them to stay in their own environment. They're all different, though. Leela is so different from her late brothers that if we go somewhere, I just might bring her to a sitter; I know either my brother or my sister would love to have her. Have a wonderful time planning this incredible vacation.

  4. Joan's right - they are all different. I know that Windi would be so sacred being boarded, no matter how nice the facility might be. I'm almost positive that she would just try to make herself as tiny as possible and not eat. We always have a sitter for my girls. She does live in our house while we're gone but it's for house security as much as for the kitties. There are lots of agencies here that do in-home pet care. Some come one time a day, some two. Depends on what you contract with them to do. Even though there isn't anyone in the house for most of the time, I think that most kitties do better in their own home.

It's like my husband says - you have been convicted of a crime that you didn't even commit. Would you rather go to jail or be on house arrest? (yeah, I know - he thinks strangely sometimes)

  5. Thank you all for your responses. WWM, that's a great way to see it. I would MUCH rather be on house arrest! I am very happy with the vet office we go to now, it's taken a long time to find such a good one. And I don't know if cats even think this way, but I don't want him to think we gave him away or anything and I really don't want him to be stressed by new sights, smells and sounds and on top of it not have us or his dogs near by. My partner thinks he'll be fine boarding because he's young yet and he's so laid back in general. I know I'm probably way over-thinking it and he won't be completely traumatized either way. But I think I'm leaning toward keeping him home and having someone stop by frequently. Not to mention it might save us money!
And yes 2b, there will be Plenty of pictures :)

  6. Wow Ama,I'm so jealous! You guys have a great time and take LOTS of pictures.

  7. How wonderful to take such a trip! I'm jealous too Ama! If it were me going so far from home...I think I'd want to remove all shadow of doubt in my mind for Mogley by leaving him with the Vet. That way you can truly relax and love the trip without worrying. Please have a wonderful trip and bring home pics!!!

  8. AMA, that sounds like an incredible trip.

As far as Mogley, do you have a trusted friend who could stay at your place while you're gone? That way, you have someone keeping Mogley company and keeping an eye on your home as well.

  9. Ama, I am so jealous. How wonderful that you and your partner get to have a trip of a lifetime. Enjoy yourselves!! Just remember the first rule..Stay safe!!!
Whenever we leave for a vacation unless it's for a few days, we always have someone come in to check on the house and the kitties. I know they feel better in their own familiar home, their own familiar smells etc. If you have someone that will come and feed Mogley and take care of him, that is the way I would go.

  10. *blush* I just realized that I wrote "sacred" instead of "scared". Dumb.

  11. lol WWM...Windi is sacred anyway :) We knew what you meant and I know I read it as scared.

  12. Lol WWM I didn't even notice that untill you pointed it out. Silly.
Thank you all so much for your kind words and sharing in my excitment. There will be loads of pictures I'm sure and I will be sure to share them when I get back. This will truely be an adventure of a lifetime for me, talk about culture shock. I'm most nervous about the traveling itself. I'm claustrophobic and my partner gets motion sick so I hope we do ok on a plane for 23+ hours hah. Shall be interesting. We're going through Japan Air and have a 3 hour layover in Tokyo so I will technically be able say I've been there too :)
My friend/co-worker offered to come watch him without me even asking, so I may take her up on that. You've all raised a good point of having someone there to check on the house too and have it look "occupied" while we're away. I would of course leave her with our vets number, the emergency hospital number, and my parents number just in case like we do with the dogs too.

  13. We had a hot water heater decide to begin leaking once while we were gone. I was so happy that there was someone here in the house to catch that or it would have been awful by the time that we got home.

Ama, the plane trip is the awful part. Just remember to get up and walk around the cabin as much as you can.

  14. Have fun and a wonderful trip to Thailand. I got married in Udorn Thani, up in the northern portion of the country. If you get the chance, go to Chiang Mai its very beautiful and the northern part of the country is so different than around the Bangkok area. The people are very friendly and it is just a totally different lifestyle there.

  15. OMG! I am jealous! I think this is a great vacation for you! Enjoy! The vet boarding sounds great but if someone can come in everyday that probably is the best thing. Home is so much more comfortable! Enjoy and know when you get back you will have to really make it up to your baby--cats are great at that guilt trip thing!

  16. With seven kitties we always have a sitter who stops by twice a day to feed and play, and take in mail, change lights around, water plants, etc. She is authorized to take any action necessary with the kitties - once two hours before we had to fly one got really ill and she took him to the vet, got his medicine, dosed him while we were gone and he was fine when we got home two weeks later. The biggest plus to a sitter is the kitties don't hate us when we get home. Granted they want to know when the nice lady is coming back but they don't turn their backs on us either. Home is definately best. Hope you have a wonderful trip, I've always thought Thailand would be interesting and beautiful. Enjoy!
