Last night it was Cheetah’s turn to watch over Mommie and Daddy while Karma and I kept watch on the rest of the house. Cheetah was snug in the bedroom making that purry noise that we’ve found keeps the monsters under the bed. Karma and I had made several uneventful patrols, stopping a few times to snack a bit. Of course, I had to do most of the lookout work because Karma is just a big Daddy’s girl and she gets scared pretty easy. It was starting to look like it would be a routine quiet night when trouble popped in. There, in one of those useless-not-growing-catnip-containers Mommie has, we spotted an evil Mud Lord. Now, we kitties don’t usually get too much hassle from Mud Lords – mostly they use their evil powers on doggies and little boys by attaching to their feet and making nasty mud prints on clean floors. But here, in our domain, one of those horrid monsters was planning a wicked indoor attack.
Naturally big scaredy-cat Karma immediately squeaked, “I’ll keep look out, Mokie, you get the monster.”, and she scuttled off to the far edge of the room. That meant I had to summon all my kitten strength and climb up to do battle alone with the Mud Lord. And what a battle it was – he flung mud all over the room, he called me names, he made that darn green thing poke me in the face – but finally I prevailed. I pushed the planter off its resting place and it took the Mud Lord with it. The dirt he hadn’t already flung around the room all landed on top of him with a loud CRAAASSSSH!
Now that it was safe for Daddy to leave the bedroom, I called to Cheetah to send him out while I nosed around in the dirt to make sure the Mud Lord was truly squished dead. That’s where Daddy found us: me making sure Mud Lord was truly defeated and Karma staring at me in speechless admiration. Daddy called Mommie out and Cheetah escorted her down the hall. Daddy knew I was exhausted from the big fight so he picked me up. Of course he had to pick up Karma too, ‘cause she’s got him wrapped around her little paw.
With Daddy and Mommie safe and happily removing all traces of the evil Mud Lord’s remains, Cheetah turned around and lead the way to the bedroom where Daddy gratefully placed us on the big soft sleeping thing. We talked among ourselves about how brave I had been (Karma tried to pretend she was just as brave but I know better), and we compared ourselves to other cat heroes who go out on the limb to save their humans from evil forces like String Monsters, Bad Cookies, Useless Décor, Spare Change, and all the other scary things that sneak into our homes.
Mommie and Daddy came back and cuddled up with us and we all slept safely and soundly through the night – although I admit my legs twitched a few times in my dreams when I thought about how close to disaster we had come. Just think, if we hadn’t been on guard duty last night, the Mud Lord might have wiped dirt all over the house.
