  1. Hey, I have a cat Panda Orson, who a month back was put on medication to help calm him down and make him feel better about life.
He was really young when he was abandoned, spend a couple weeks in a room under a bed, and just didn't receive the socialization he needed in time.

Alright well becuase he's so nutzoid, he doesn't let me pick him up, let alone approach him! He's very loving though, but only when he wants it. (like when you're sitting on the toilet, he decided that's the best time for kitty lovings)

I tried holding him while I pop his mouth open (which he doesn't allow!)
then I tried holding him while my mom popped it in his mouth (wouldn't open for her either)
So I bought Pill Pockets which he ate two of, but now he looks at them and doesn't eat them. He doesn't eat treats much anymore, I'm guessing the pills taste bad...?

So Panda O hasn't received his pills for a few weeks, and I feel bad because I want him to be as normal and comfy as possible...

Is it possible to crush the pills and put them in his food??
I'm afraid though that if he is startled while eating he'll leave the plate while one of the others eat it. (Charlie and Stinkey have both stolen the treats once each and when Charlie did, he slept all day)

I don't think I can feed him in a separate room because I am unable to pick him up or get him to come when called.

I just don't know what to do anymore for him.

    Any suggestions?

  2. I had the same problem giving my baby medication. I tried the pill pockets and he did the same thing. He took the first couple but then he said "I'm not stupid, there's a pill in here". Cats are very smart so it ddn't take long. I started putting his pill in things like cheese, a small piece of vienna sausage, a soft chewy treat or food of some sort that it can be hidden in. Other then that, if you can approach him, you could use a pill popper to shoot it down his throat. I didn't like doing that but I had to do what was best for him. So thankfully he liked the soft foods I could hide it in. If he dosen't come when you call him then call your other cats and feed them and shut the door where he is and throw that treat with the pill in there for him. I hope this helps. I wish I had a better answer for you. Good luck to you and your baby!

  3. Whenever I have had to give Shadz pills I use a pill popper I bought from the vet. I just hold her scruff tilt her head and put the popper by the side of her mouth and with gentle pressure from the popper she opens up and I pop. Shadz is quite a wild wee girl when it comes to pills and flea application time. The scruff works perfectly for us.

  4. Could you use Rescue Remedy or get a feliway diffuser or something like that? Panda might come around still,it just takes a while. Giving a cat like that pills when he already has trust issues will probably only make things worse in the long run. It was worth a try,I'm not criticizing you or anything. I would just try to gain his trust by giving him treats and not trying to do anything that he doesn't want like for a while. I've had feral cats come around even though they weren't socialized when they were younger so I don't know if I agree with that premise or not although I've heard it before too.
Thanks for caring enough to work with him NAC,hopefully others will have suggestions too.

  5. You could try the clothes peg trick on her. Whenever I need to give pills I dissolve them in a teaspooon of water with a little sugar or honey and squirt it into the side of the mouth. You need to check to make sure the properties in the pill do not lose their effectiveness if administered that way. You vet can tell you.

  6. Have you tried wrapping the pills in cream cheese? I had one cat this worked for. Otherwise I think the pill popper might be your best bet.

  7. When I went to the pet store they didn't have any "Pill Shooters" and the last two appointments had to be canceled because we couldn't get Panda O into the carrier! He ripped my favorite shirt when I picked him up so I cried and gave up.
I think I'll try the different foods. I've never really given him cheese or anything, but I'm pretty sure he'd like it.

For the Feliaway Diffusers, are they like the glade plug-ins? You just put them around the house and they mist?? I've seen them at the stores, but I haven't actually looked at them.

And when I was looking at Rescue Remedy, I don't want to have to put it in the water where all the cats and dog drink from, plus I read it evaporates quickly because of the alcohol, so there'd be no way to see him drinking and be able to add it to the water.

Next time we go to the vet, if the pill situation hasn't been resolved, I may ask what other options are. But I'm guessing pills are the only real option.

Thanks guys, your advice is very helpful

  8. Peanut butter. Stick the pill in a small gob of peanut butter and smear on the roof of his mouth. He won't be able to spit it out, and will spend the next 10 minutes licking, but it works well. Cuddles was a professional pill spitter until I learn this trick!!! Works like a charm!

  9. Panda sounds very similar to Cato. I have to give him a daily pill so that he doesn't groom himself bald :) I tried every thing even giving something he absolutely loves and then (sounds rather cruel) grabbing him by the scruff (when he was snorting in ecstasy) whipping his mouth open (hopefully it is already open) and then pushing my finger down into this gullet until he swallowed. I got bit a good deal, but it work, but he got wise and ran away when I gave him something good to eat.....so the vet suggested a compounding pharmacy that could make the medicine creamy so I could put it on the inside of his ears. This has worked wonders for our relationship and is a great way to deliver a drug to a hard pill taker. It is also very cheap, at least mine is very cheap. Elizabeth

  10. My Bobby started pretending to swallow his and then spitting them out later. He doesn't like any kind of food or pill pockets so I can't hide a pill in his food.I finally figured out what to do last week. Now Icoat the pill in just a tiny bit of butter to make it slippery enough that he swallows it even if he doesn't want to. At the end I wipe my finger on his nose to make him lick it off and he automatically swallowsbefore he licks his nose! No more spit-ups! :)

  11. As far as Rescue Remedy is concerned if you put it in the water and all your pets injest it, it won't matter. It does not affect them unless they are having the same kind of problems. This product does not make them dopey or lethargic it just calms them down. If they don't need to be calmed down then there will be no effect and it certainly won't harm them.

You don't need to put it in their water. If you wanted you can syringe it right into her mouth or add it to food.

  12. Petpntr, does Rescue Remedy really work?

  13. I have only had to use it a couple of times. Once when I had a brother and sister getting fixed on the same day. I knew he would heal quicker and he was huge, she was a tiny little thing. And he was a big clumsy playmate. I was afraid he would hurt her and that's when I first heard about RR. I could not believe it. It did not affect the other cats one bit. Fellini calmed right down. He wasn't lethargic or dopey, just calm. It was quite remarkable. I also used it a couple times when I had to take the cats in the car to the vet or to move. In all cases it helped. Some cats it seemed were a little more affected by it than others but the overall result, in my opinion, was worth it.
