Do Cats Suffer From Fear of Dying?

  1. My precious Juuei has had a few hypoglycemic attacks and his behaviour seems to have changed. - For better.

He has become a velcro kitty, he needs more love and attention. When the diabetes appeared he became limp and unattentive; he just lied behind my microwave oven. When we received the balance with insulin medication he slowly became more attentive and perkier. My bad boy Miska picked on him when he was at his sickest; now that too has diminished.

But the real turning point has happened recently with the bouts. He is suddenly 'my kitty' 24/7 and won't leave me from his sight. It is like he realized that I (or the vet) saved his life. Is that crazy?

  2. I think that he knows that you helped him to feel better but also I think that he might have picked up on your increased anxiety due to his episodes and he is staying close to help calm you.
I think animals live very much in the moment.

  3. Not crazy at all. My Melissa used to do the very same thing when he was sick or had just recovered. I truly believe taht they know that we will help them and they can count on us. Not only is Juuie beautiful, he's smart too!

  4. Miu, I am with Buttercup. I think animals live very much in the moment. I do not think that they have a fear of dying, like we do. I think that they only know, moment to moment, whether they feel good or whether they feel sick and vulnerable.

But I do also think that animals are capable of great love and loyalty and that we truly do become, in their eyes, their 'mamas and dads'. We all want our mum when we feel sick or vulnerable. You are Juuei's mum and, while he always loved you to bits, now he really feels he needs you and of course he doesn't want you out of his sight.

Does this make sense? Probably not. But {{{HUGS}}} to you and Juuei anyway!

  5. I have never thought of that. What an incredible question Miu. I agree with the others. I suspect Juuei feels your love and concern on a more heightened level when he was sick. Cats are extremely sensitive to our emotions. I don't believe they are capable of thinking about death. Perhaps they think of it in the final stages and recognize they are leaving this plain but not before. So the short answer in my opinion is that Juuei is returning your love. He knows and appreciates how much you care and love him and he is reciprocating.

  6. what a good question! I had a similar experience with Trixie, he suffers from a skin condition, similar to dermatitis, and a few years ago he suffered an infection as a result. we nearly lost him then, and for about a month after he was like my shadow, really followed me everywhere, and i would catch him really intently staring at me with his head tilted to one side out of the corner of my eye. really sweet. i agree with buttercup, jcat and petpntr. he loves you and wants to be close to you.xx
