I am so mad I could spit nails. I have been a casual seller/buyer on ebay now for over 8 years. I have had the paypal acct. that ebay likes for you to have when making transactions. I have 100% positive ratings on 63 transactions. Well, I'm kind of low on funds so I decided to sell some frivilous stuff. I just received notification that ebay now holds funds that are due to me for up to 21 days. Since I have less than 100 transactions it seems that I am being treated as someone that is not honest or can not be trusted in the ebay community. I have called paypal and ebay to no avail. It just burns me up that I need that damn money and can't get it until the buying customer leaves a positive feedback rating. One way to get the funds released is if the item I ship makes it to the final destination in 3 days. THREE DAYS! For God's sake, it is a holiday week! I am so pissed off! EBAY IS EVIL. I feel like ebay is holding my funds so that they can make more money off of my money. The insertion fees, final value fees and the paypal fees are expensive as it is. Now they want my money to make more money. Did I say EBAY is EVIL? Sorry I just had to vent.....

That is unbelievable. I would be spitting nails too. I can understand them not wanting to forward funds until the merchandise is received but my God 21 days is ridiculous. Did you try to telephone them. I had to do that once and got results but that was years ago and things may have changed. They didn't used to do that so their policy has changed at some point but they could have at least let people know about it so you are prepared if you need to wait. And what about the people who don't bother sending in feedback? I think eBay is the biggest commercial monster there is next to WalMart. It's their way or no way.
-
I did call them. I called paypal first then realized that it was an ebay policy. My poor gallery assistant. I had a full blown temper tantrum with stomping feet and everything. I had to ask 4 times to speak with a supervisor. When I finally was allowed to speak with the supervisor, he informed me that I was not the first person to make that very same phone call. I had listed 2 more things last night, 2 nice coach bags, and I promptly removed them while I was talking with the supervisor. I told him that I would not be listing anything else until the policy changed. I also told him that I hoped other small ebayers such as me were doing the same thing. You are right, ebay has turned into a huge money making commercial monster like wal-mart. Ebay obviously outsources, the people I spoke with had heavy accents that I could barely understand. Of course, I was on the phone with the computer answering machine prompting me to the main menu for 10 minutes before talking to a real person! HIss HIss Spit SPit

Tina I am so sorry to hear this. You know that ebay always get money owed to them immediately and the little guy gets to wait. Not to mention the timing just stinks to high heaven. Is there a number to call? You'd probably get someone on the phone that can make a change--they are on vacation. Tina prayers that this resolves quickly.
-
Well that answers my question. Outsourcing doesn't suprise me either. The company I worked for when I got to New Mexico, all of us lost our jobs for Christmas because they decided to move the call center to India. I understand that they may need jobs, but I worked for an American company and actually expected that my job wouldn't be shifted to another country.

Sorry Tina, yes Ebay has become evil. I was sent an email notification about them starting to hold funds. I stopped listing and buying from there after they made it mandatory that all payments go thru PayPal, which also makes them money since they own PayPal. Let me add a growl to your "HIss HIss Spit SPit"

I used to like to Ebay. Selling is fun when people are bidding on your stuff. I knew that they raised the fees and etc. but to hold funds on a good, reliable ebayer just stinks. I am off ebay for now. I even thought maybe I should start my own little online auction site! I always love the deal! I am not hissing mad anymore, just blowing air out of mouth in a huff like my gray tuxey boy Randle. He always huffs when I am messing with him!

Gosh, Tinafish - that is awful! I have only bought things on eBay, never sold anything. Do you think that Craigslist might be better? I have never used it but people keep raving about it.

WWM, That is a possibility I have not thought of. I actually bought something off of Craig's list earlier in the fall. It came from Maine and didn't cost me anything other than what the owner of the item wanted. Hmm, she mutters as tapping her forehead deep in thought!

I've never sold on Ebay, but I sell on Amazon all the time. They collect money and pay every 2 weeks - you can't get your money any sooner than that. It IS kind of annoying - first it takes 2 wwks to wait for the money and then it takes another 5 days for the money to get deposited to my account. Grrrr
-
I've never tried Amazon. But the 2 week wait plus an additional 5 days for the deposit makes me scratch my head. I think they are keeping the money so that they can make money off of the money you have made. Too bad I don't have the stomach to be a big greedy corporate monster to fleece the little guys. GD reminded me of something. Doesn't Yahoo have an auction site. I seem to remember some of the artists I knew from a group sold a lot of things on Yahoo.
Also, in case you are interested in Craigslist I use Craigslist and Kijiji a lot. You deal directly with the buyer which can be a pain sometimes but at least you set the mood and make the decisions. I have done extremely well on both selling some vintage/antique furniture as well as odds and ends. I have never dealt with anyone who didn't live close to where I do so they come and look and come to pay and pick up. I am not sure what kind of arrangements are made if you are shipping out of town. With things like a purse I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I once sold an antique desk to someone who was in Florida when he saw it listed on my Toronto listing. He wanted it and paid me through PayPal the same night. I got the money immediately and shipped him the desk that week. So it certainly can be done.

Other than the fact that it takes so long, I've never had trouble with Amazon and their site is much easier to use than Ebay. I've sold not only books there, but also an old tennis racquet, cat toys, games etc.
I've had incidents where a customer wasn't satisfied with the product - mostly because the post office mangled the package - where I issued a refund. In that case, I guess it makes sense that they haven't given me all them money yet. -
So Amazon holds money for 19 days. I am not an ebayer, I have always thought they were pretty evil. Tina I am so sorry that they are holding you up, just when you need the money the most. Just keep spreading the word about their bad customer service. As a consumer that is the best you can do against a big corporation.

Look what I found. I do remember that a couple of the artists were thrilled about selling on Yahoo and said they had better luck than with eBay. That was a few years ago so I don't know if it has changed but it is worth looking into:

GD - Unfortunately, that is Ebay's policy. I took a course recently on Ebay because I wanted to start selling real estate on it come the new year. One thing all of us in the class learned, and put into practice, was to get our ratings & transaction numbers up. We created "book CD's" (fake, and really stupid so that no actual person would try to buy one), and then "sold" them to each other for like a dime. Put it out there for the minimal days 1 if you can), the then have friends of yours "bid". Once they have won the bid, you go in and market it paid, and shipped. Then, they go back in and give you feed back. Use terms like A +++++++++++ that really bumps your ratings. There were like 50 people in my class, and we all did this for each other, so we were able to quickly build ratings. (Bye the way, if anyone from Ebay is a TDKer, I did not just say this)
-
Hi Abbigaleviolet:
I took an ebay class years ago. Of course, back then the policies weren't as rigid. I have 100% positive ratings. I only have 63 transactions total. I feel as if I am being punished by ebay for being a good customer/seller. It seems to me that alot of work is involved trying to get my ratings increased by having to post items just for the rating. It is unbelievable to me that ebay moniters ratings so that funds can be released in a timely manner but they aren't so good at policing fake items. What a commentary that sellers are having to go to the extremes that your class did to increase ratings. Ebay must be a bunch of idiots....Let's make it tough on the little guys/gals that are honest but let's applaud the big sellers that sell fakes and are disreputable. I agree Tina, even the teacher said it was nuts, but right now, its how to "play the game"!!! It is a lot of extra work, and does seem silly!!
I do like Craigs list. I use that all the time, and have had no problems. I sell stuff, buy stuff and find people to do odd jobs. We've had great success there. You do have to be careful, and I have a yahoo email just for purposes of receiving those responses. But I like it!
-
Yahoo used to have an auction site, but they closed it several years ago. Now they have stores. I think individual sellers can open virtual stores, but I have no idea how much it costs.
There were several people from whom I regularly bought things on Yahoo auctions, and I think only one of them is selling on eBay. The others couldn't afford it. A retired police officer living in Sturgis, SD, was my most regular supplier. He called eBay "FeePay".
-
Hi Leeny,
I love it, "FeePay". I hadn't sold anything in some time so I was totally shocked by the fees!Posted 1 year ago by tinafishfrombirthplaceofElvis #

Here's Al Yankovic's take on eBay:

Like many businesses that get started as a way to simplfy things for the little guy, eBay was so successful it started thinking like the Big Guys. Now they are too big, too commercial and too full of themselves. That's the problem with succeeding - you become whatever it was you were competing against.
Try Craigslist - or search for some other smaller sales sites. Unless you really need to have something bid up, many of the other sites are just as good.
