The story of the Ghost Cat - just in time for Halloween
(75 posts)-
Owlwatcher, I wasn't worried about you at all. As a fellow ghost cat "seer" I can attest to their existance, no doubt. I have several ghost cats in my house. Some have owned me, others I don't know at all. They don't bother anyone, just like to be noticed.
Thanks for sharing your tails. When time permits, I'll tell you some of mine!

Since I have been asked to continue, I will now continue the story of the ghost cat from where I left off last night. Now that I am free to embellish without worrying all of you, it will be much easier to make this as spooky as I can. Keep in mind that most of the story will center around true events (which will probably be spookier than the fiction) and only the appearances of the ghost cat will be fiction inspired by true events.

Isn't it funny how the truth is always stranger than fiction?

The ghost cat made one final appearance last night. It was after I finished with the computer in the back bedroom and decided to bring my cats in for the night. Mamma kitty came in without a fight but, as soon as I opened the door to take the food out to our dog, Trinity, Shiva burst out of the house and ran down the driveway. I raced after her but she was impossible to see in the dark. I figured that she would come back in once the cat's food was ready.
I walked back up the driveway and that's when I saw it. This time there was no mistaking the Siamese markings. It's definitely Snoopy in the living room window. His eyes were fixed on me as I walked toward the house and he me get right up to the window before disappearing -- only he didn't disappear while I was looking at him. Trinity started barking and I turned toward her to quiet her down. When I looked back at the window, he was gone.
Now I am left with several questions. Was the cat in the back room actually Snoopy? Are there two ghost cats? And, most important of all, why is he back after all these years?

He's not back after all of these years, he never left. Something must have happened that made you aware of him again. He was always there, just watching. Has their been a unusal amount of stress in the house, has someone died or is someone very sick. All of these events can herald the appearance of the ghost cats. Do you have more than one? No doubt. In my house I have three that have owned me, but there are at least two others that I can't place. They know no sence of time, just places and people they want to be near.

Something strange just happened. I was in the living room eating lunch and I noticed that there seemed to be a sort of haze all through the house. I thought that maybe it was just because the light coming in the windows was hazy but the house is feeling haunted again.
I finished my lunch and I guess I had fallen asleep when I was startled awake by a loud noise from the back bedroom. I stood up and looked into the room and noticed one of the drawers in the chest of drawers in the back corner was all the way open. I went back to take a closer look and realized that this was the drawer that had been stuck in a half-open position for over a year. I had put a bunch of photo albums in the drawer right after I cleaned out that bedroom and, I guess I had put way too much in there because the drawer started coming apart and got stuck. I have never been able to get it open and now it was open all the way.
One of the photo albums was sitting at an odd angle. I wondered if something was trying to tell me something so I took the photo album out and opened it. That was when I noticed the cat in the windowsill. I started to walk toward the window but nearly tripped over a cord from one of my keyboards. After I regained my balance, I looked back up but the cat was gone.
Looking through the album brought back many memories. One of the pictures was taken in the house I used to live in around the corner. That house was a frightening place for a young child to live in. I have been in my share of 'haunted houses' but I still have dreams about that house.
This particular picture was taken at Christmas time when I was about 6 years old and it showed me holding up one of my gifts with the lit up Christmas tree on one side of me. The old TV was on the other side of me. Seeing that TV brought back memories of one of the strangest things that ever happened to me.
I was about 8 years old when this happened. My mom and the jerk she was married to at the time were gone and I was outside playing. I was allowed to play outside as long as I went into the house before dark. I hated being in that house alone so I stayed outside as long as I could. Finally, the living room light came on (which wasn't unusual in that house - in fact I remember thinking nothing of seeing the light come on by itself) and I knew it was time to go in. Besides, it was starting to get cold outside and I didn't have a jacket on. I went into the house and took the ball I had been playing with into my room. When I came back out, the TV was on. This too was nothing unusual. The TV in that house used to turn on and off by itself all the time and the button would actually move in or out as if somebody had turned the TV on or off. I remember looking at the clock thinking it was nearly time for "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home" to come on. I went into the kitchen to get some Kool-Aid and, when I came back into the living room, the TV had changed channels and the show was starting.
A few minutes later, I heard something that in the kitchen that sounded like the basement door rattling. I got up and went into the kitchen. I had always thought it was strange to have a door to the basement in the kitchen. I hated that basement. Every time I went down there, I felt like there was something watching me and one time I actually thought I heard voices down there. As I stood there staring at the door, I heard it rattle again but the door didn't move. I found myself turning toward the kitchen counters and to the drawer where we kept the doorknob for the basement door. I was petrified yet something seemed to be pushing me to open that door. I found myself taking the doorknob out of the drawer and putting it into the hole in the door. I can't remember if I actually turned the knob. I seem to remember the door flying open feeling myself falling backward then everything went black. I found myself waking up on the couch in the living room. "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home" was just ending. Had it been a dream? I went into the kitchen and found the basement door shut with the doorknob still in it.
I still have no explanation for what happened that night. All I know is that my head was hurting and I had a lump as if I had fallen against the sharp edge of the kitchen counter.
As I stood there staring at the photo and thinking about the strange events of that night long ago, I heard a loud wailing that sounded like a cat fight outside. I ran outside to find Shiva and Mamma kitty having some angry words with one another. I managed to get them to calm down then, as I turned to go back into the house, I saw the cat in the window again. He was gone by the time I got back into the house.
So far, my roommate still has not seen the ghost cat and I hope it stays that way. Still, I don't know how long I am going to be able to keep it a secret if these strange things keep happening.

Owlwatcher, you have a gift. You know that November is National Novel Writing Month. You could write a novel centering around the re-appearance of the ghost cat and the strange events that unfolded. I like the story told from the first person perspective too.

How fun, and weird, too. I love the stories, and I agree with ppearson. You should write the story.
Thanks for the entertainment owlwatcher. I will one day relate the happenings of a friend of mine, that I couldn't tell as well as he told it.

I saw a white figure rush by the couch this evening as my roommate and I were sitting there watching TV. My first thought was that it was one of my cats and I nearly said something to it. Then I realized that it couldn't have been one of my cats. I am wondering if all these stories are bringing the real ghost cat back.

After dinner, my roommate fell asleep in the living room on the couch so I decided to go back into the back bedroom to see if I could find any clue as to why the ghost cat has returned and see if I could find out anything about that other cat that I saw last night.
I looked into the drawer where the photo albums were -- the one that I had found open earlier. I nearly left the room when I saw that there was a different album on top of the others. The feeling in the back bedroom wasn't as scary as last night though so I decided to stay back there and look through the photo album.
I found a picture that had been taken in the living room back when I was probably about 16 or 17. The picture showed Snoopy sitting on the couch. I nearly cried when I saw him. I never realized how much I missed that cat. Then I noticed something that nearly made me drop the photo album. Over in the corner of the living room under one of the end tables was a vague outline of another cat. The more I stared at the photo, the clearer the image seemed to become. My grandparents only had one cat and that was Snoopy! A noise from over by the window distracted me and I looked up to see what it was. Seeing nothing that could have made that noise, I turned my attention back to the photo and this time I did drop the photo album. The other cat in the picture was gone!
I nearly jumped through the window as my roommate's voice startled me. Once my heart returned to my chest, and we both stopped laughing at my reaction, he asked me again what that noise was. I explained that I had been looking through and old photo album and it had slipped out of my hands. I picked the photo album up and showed him the picture of Snoopy. He and I looked at a few of the other photos for a few minutes then he went back into the other room.
I saw another picture that brought back a really strong memory of something that happened when I was probably about 12 or 13. I was asleep in my bedroom here and my cousins were sleeping in the other bedroom that belonged to my brother. My brother had moved out so my cousins were able to sleep in that room when they visited for the weekends until my brother moved back in several years later.
I am not sure what woke me up but I heard a lot of sirens that stopped very close to the house. I was tempted to go out into the living room to look out the window to see what was happening but, for some reason, I was afraid to leave my bedroom. It's not like the house was dark or anything. My grandmother had night lights in the kitchen and in the bathroom down the hall. There were also night lights in my bedroom and in the bedroom that my cousins were sleeping in as well as in my grandparents bathroom so there was plenty of light which kept the house from seeming too spooky at night. Still, I was afraid to even open my bedroom door. I must have fallen back asleep because I was woke up thinking I had been hearing somebody walking around in the living room. I decided it must have been a dream and went back to sleep.
The next morning, my grandmother and I were talking about the sirens and she told me that she had heard the front door open. The front door was locked with a deadbolt so it would have taken a lot to get it open without a key. My grandmother went on to tell me that she had heard heavy footsteps -- like somebody was walking around in heavy boots. She said that she was getting ready to go into the living room and see what was going on but something told her that she didn't want to see who was in the living room so she just stayed in the bedroom. A few minutes later she heard the footsteps again going toward the front door and then the front door opening and closing again. Thinking that whoever it was had left, my grandmother went into the front room to investigate and found the front door locked. Somebody would have needed a key to lock that deadbolt but only my grandmother and grandfather had keys. My brother had a key but he gave it back to my grandparents when he moved out.
As my grandmother finished telling the story, my cousins came into the kitchen where we had been talking and they too had heard the sirens and had heard what sounded like somebody walking around in heavy boots. Like my grandmother and me, they were afraid to go out into the living room although neither of them had heard the front door open or close.
Later on, we found out that there had been accident in front of the store across the street and a man who, if I remember the story right, had been running from the police had died in the crash.
This memory caused me to shiver as a chill ran down my spine. I quickly put the photo album back and turned to leave when I saw the ghost cat standing in front of me. This time, I knelt down and held my hand out to Snoopy who came up to me and let me pet him. I found myself fighting back tears as my hand touched the incredibly soft fur and the sound of purring echoed throughout the room.
"What has brought you back here boy"?
The most gorgeous blue eyes stared into mine and I felt an incredible sense of urgency. A noise coming from the living room distracted me and I looked up to see my roommate getting up off of the couch. I looked back down and the ghost cat was gone.

owlwatcher, you tell stories so beautifully, you should indeed write it and submit it for publishing. The visual pictures are very strong and draw one's thoughts in and wanting more of the story.

I am posting this from school. Some very creepy things happened last night and I saw the other ghost cat with the red eyes twice - once last night and once this morning.
Last night, I went back into the back bathroom to take a shower. When I walked back out of the bathroom and into the back bedroom, I saw a cat in the windowsill. Thinking it might be Snoopy again, I walked toward the window. That's when I saw that it was the white cat with the glowing red eyes. He hissed at me and I just turned around and to leave the room. That was when I saw the shadow in the little hallway in front of the closet. It was big and it was in the center of the hallway -- not on a wall or anything but free standing in the middle of the hallway! It looked like a very large man with no features.
I heard a noise and noticed that the white cat was now right behind me and coming toward me with its ears laid back and teeth bared. Needless to say, I got out of that room fast and closed the door behind me!!
It was late and, since I had to get up early for my classes today, I knew I had to go to bed even though the last thing I felt like doing was sleeping. As I was getting ready for bed, I saw something small and white out of the corner of my eye in the hallway outside my door. I stepped out of my room to investigate when my roommate came out of his room, nearly scaring me half to death, and asked me Shiva and Mamma Kitty had been fighting a few minutes ago. I told him that I had been in the shower and hadn't heard anything. We went into the kitchen and found Mamma Kitty asleep in her spot on top of the dryer and Shiva sitting wide-eyed in front of the dryer.
When she saw me, Shiva immediately rubbed up against me as if she were very happy to see me. I should mention that Shiva had followed me into the back bedroom when I first went in to take a shower like she usually does. Normally she waits for me to finish and the either follows me back out of the room or sleeps in the back bedroom. But she never sleeps in the kitchen -- especially not so close to Mamma Kitty.
My roommate went back into his room and, as I went back to my bedroom, Shiva raced in ahead of me and curled up on the rug in front of my desk chair. Normally I make her leave the room when I go to bed because the door is closed all night but this time I let her stay.
This morning when I got up, I realized that the internet connection had been lost and I needed to go reset the modem. I was still half-asleep and, even though the house was dark, I went back into the back bedroom to reset the modem not thinking about what happened last night. When I opened the door, I felt a sense of dread but I wanted to check my emails so I walked in darkness over to the modem to reset. When I turned to leave the room, the white cat was blocking my path. Now unbelievably wide awake, I stood there in shock not sure what to do. His glowing red eyes on their own were frightening enough but somehow he was now twice the size of a normal house cat!!
Next thing I knew, Snoopy was standing between me and the other cat. The other cat turned and bolted into the hallway in front of the closet and disappeared. I looked back down to see that Snoopy had also disappeared. I got out of that room as quickly as I could.
I am a nervous wreck. I know I need to get back home soon. There are a million things I need to get done today but I am not looking forward to having to go back to that house right now. Especially since I have to go into the back bedroom to get a box to mail something off.
Why is this happening???!!!!

I just got back home a little while ago. I had to go into the back bedroom to get something packed up for shipping. I found myself constantly looking over my shoulder when I was back there even though the room is lit up by the bright sunshine coming in through the windows.
My roommate will be gone for most of the afternoon and evening so, except for the time spent running errands going to class this evening, I will be here alone. Usually, I like having the house to myself, but not today.
I am using the computer in the living room to type this because, even though it feels spooky in here, I would rather be in here where there are several escape routes in case that evil ghost cat or that creepy shadow guy shows up again.
Hey... what's this? There is a photo album on the shelf next to me. I haven't seen this one before. Where did this come from???

I just spent a few minutes looking through the photo album. I don't know where these pictures came from. Most of them are from my early childhood but I have never seen them before.
There is one photo that shows an old tan 4-door car that my mom used to have. I forget what kind of car it was. It just looks like your basic 4-door family car in the picture. I believe it was a Chevy but I really don't remember. I was only about 7 or 8 when she had this car and she only had it for a little while.
My mom bought the car from her uncle way back when he was selling used cars from his home. I still remember seeing at least 10 cars at a time parked in his yard two houses down from here. My mom's beloved Buick died because some jerk decided to pour several extra quarts of oil in the engine which blew out all of the oil seals. My mom thought she knew who did it but she had no proof so they got away with destroying the car. My mom couldn't afford to fix the Buick so she asked her uncle if he would help her out so he sold her that old tan car. I'll just refer to the car as the Chevy from here on out.
The first few times my mom drove the Chevy, there were no problems. It seemed like the perfect car until she drove it to work one night. My mom was a private duty nurse and worked in people's homes. She often worked late at night and sometimes all night if she was needed. I had been to this house with her a couple of times when she had nobody to babysit for me so I remember how long the drive was. There was one road through the hills that my mom had to take and it had a lot of sharp curves. One wrong move on that road could easily send a car off the road and over a 100 foot drop. Definitely not a road you where you want to make any mistakes.
That night when my mom came home from work, she was scared and upset. She said that when she got to one part of the road going through the hills, sparks started coming from under the Chevy's dash board and the car kept trying to drive itself off the road! The jerk she was married to at the time didn't believe her. Finally she convinced him that something had happened so he took the car on a drive to see if anything was wrong with it. The Chevy showed no signs of any problems so he told her there was nothing wrong with it. The next day, my mom had a friend who was a mechanic look at the car. He too could find nothing wrong with it.
I had to go to work with my mom the next night because the jerk she was married to at the time had to work too. As we were driving home late that night, everything seemed normal until we got to the hills. I still remember seeing the flashing sparks and the smoke coming from the dashboard and my mom panicking as she struggled to keep the Chevy on the road.
Again, nobody could find anything wrong with the car or any burnt wiring under the dashboard. It was as if nothing had happened. Even though I had been in the car and had also seen the sparks and smoke, nobody believed me or my mom. That jerk she was married to acted like she was crazy - that is until he decided to drive her to work the next night and pick her up. This time he saw it with his own eyes. When he got to that one particular curve on that road through the hills, the entire car was lit up by the sparks coming from under the dashboard and he had to fight to keep the car on the road. By this time we were beginning to suspect that the Chevy had been in a bad accident on that road. We had no way of contacting the previous owners of the car and my mom's uncle told her that he had been told that the car had never been in an accident. Still, the only explanation we could come up with at that point was that this car had been in a bad accident on that road and either somebody had been killed in the Chevy or by the Chevy and they were trying to destroy it on that road.
Since my mom had no other transportation, she was forced to drive the Chevy to work for a few more weeks. Since the car only acted up on that one road at that one particular curve, my mom felt pretty safe driving it everywhere else. But one night she had to take that same road again. This time the Chevy nearly succeeded in driving itself off the road.
Finally, one of my mom's friends took a good look underneath the Chevy and discovered that the frame had been repaired and was still bent in at least one place. His conclusion was that the Chevy had been in a very nasty accident and had probably had extensive repair done on it. That was all my mom needed to hear. She finally got another car and sold the Chevy.
Funny thing, I never knew any photos of the Chevy existed. We had one of those old Swinger cameras back then but it rarely had any film in it and the pictures that came from that camera looked different too. Where did this picture come from???

Just as I finished typing that last post, another picture fell out of the photo album. It's a picture of my grandfather standing in the little hallway in front of the closet in the back bedroom. This picture looks like it was taken after my grandfather had gotten very sick from lung cancer. He looks like he is trying to smile for the camera but he has a pained look on his face like he used to get when he was hurting and having trouble breathing.
Why would anybody take this picture? It's not the best place to take a picture and he looks like he would rather be sitting down than standing up. If somebody was going to take a picture of him, why not take the picture in the living room where he could sit down and would be more comfortable?
Another odd thing about this picture, why is this picture in a photo album with other pictures that are much older? My mom and my grandmother used to put pictures in the albums as soon as they were taken. The pictures in their albums are always in groups from the same time period.
Wait.. this is .. it can't be.. in the dark part of the hallway.. that's my little vacuum cleaner!!!! Who took this picture??!! Where did this picture come from???!!!!

That white cat made another appearance a few minutes ago. I had put the photo of my grandfather on the desk in front of my computer monitor. I got up to get some water. I was about half-way to the kitchen when I decided I wanted to put that photo somewhere safe. I turned around to go back to the desk and the white cat was sitting on my computer desk. I didn't want anything to happen to the photo so I tried to shoo the cat away. He just glared at me with those glowing red eyes, laid his ears back, and hissed at me. I turned around to grab the baseball bat we keep next to the door and when I turned back, he was gone and so was the picture.
I actually went into the back bedroom, baseball bat in hand, to look for him but he was nowhere to be found. That whole room feels spooky ... it's much worse than before. As I went toward the door to go back into the living room, I could feel the static in that little hallway in front of the closet. Something is going to happen soon. I can feel it...

I am posting this from my word processing class so I have to be careful that my instructor doesn't catch me.
As I was getting ready to leave for class, my internet connection went out and I went to the back bedroom to reset the modem. Being alone in the house, I really didn't want to go back there but I needed to check my emails to make sure we were having class tonight and to get my assignments.
I was almost at the door to the back bedroom, that huge shadow blocked my way. It was as if it didn't want to let me into the back bedroom. I heard a noise and noticed that the white cat had appeared at the shadow man's feet and was advancing toward me. I held my ground and glared into the glowing red eyes. I was getting a little tired of this. I needed to get back into the back bedroom to reset that modem and I was in no mood for this.
Next thing I knew, Snoopy was standing between me and the evil ghost cat. The evil ghost cat retreated back toward the shadow man's feet. I took a deep breath and moved forward past the shadow man and restarted the modem. As I passed the shadow man, I could feel a sort of energy emanating from the hallway.
I quickly got out of that room -- actually I ran out of the room since my roommate was gone and I didn't have to worry about scaring him. Snoopy was still in the living room when I got back in there and he followed me over to the computer and sat down on the desk while I checked my email and downloaded my assignments.
After I was done with the computer, I looked at Snoopy and said, "Why are they here? Why don't they want me in that room?"
Snoopy looked up at me and I could hear the words in my mind, "Not yet".
Suddenly it hit me. I know what is going on. I hope the teacher lets us go home early. I am anxious to get back home .... I need to get back there before my roommate gets back.

The instructor finally let us out of class and I raced home as fast as I could. I was so anxious to get home that I nearly ran a couple of red lights!!
The house was dark and cold when I got here. The weather outside is comfortable but the house is unusually cold. I have to get into the back room but the time hasn't arrived yet. I have to wait for Snoopy to appear again.
It shouldn't be long now....

The white cat with the red eyes is roaming around the house .. he's restless as if he is waiting for something.
The back bedroom smells like I remember it smelling when my grandparents were alive. There are shadows forming all over the living room and it feels as if I am surrounded... Snoopy where are you???!!!
