  1. Have at least one american understand me when I say my name.
This may sound insane but it is the biggest problem I have had since being here. My name is not uncommon (Erin) but in NZ our vowels can get a bit flat (aussies call it feesh and cheeps, nzers call it fush and chups). Since being in the states I have not been able to get anyone to understand me when I say my name. They typically think I say Aaron but a cool one I got last week was Airn and other variations. I am playing with the idea of carrying around a card with my name spelt out on it.
My resolution is to learn how to say e's so that I can have people understand me when I say my name.

  2. LMAO here, when you were a wee baby and people asked your name they all thought it was Aaron because at that time the fashion was to pronounce Aaron as 'Air-in' and not Aaaaaron. I guess they were also confused because our girls were normally in blue and not pink. I refused to stereotype them by putting them in pink.
Just tell them it is Erin like in the 'Waltons'. Goodnight Johnboy, goodnight Erin.
Hence the Goodnight Jim-man and goodnight Airy at the end of Night shift.

  3. Airy aka Erin, pssssstttt hint, the majority of people (at least that I have seen in the U.S.) can't even pronounce nor spell simple names. For example my name is Debra and you wouldn't believe how many times its mis-spelled, mis-pronounced and what have you. I have had it go so far as to be listed as Barbara or Barbra and that is nowhere near my name :(

  4. You know, Airy, I had the same problem with pronouncing my name when I first moved here! People could not figure out what I was saying. They'd always get it in the end and say "Ohhhh, Charlotte!" and I'd think "that's what I was saying!" - sounded much the same to me.
I started telling people my name and if they looked puzzled, I'd say Charlotte - as in Charlotte, NC or Charlotte as in Charlotte's Web. That always helped.
You can be Erin, like Erin Brockovich.

  8. New Years resolution, hmmmm, don't know what i'll decide on this year. Last year it was to lose weight, I have lost weight but not quite in the way I would have chosen given a choice but I can't turn that clock back. I'm going to have to think long and hard on this years resolution. I'll let you know next year what I decide.

  11. LOL! People always misunderstand my name with Marissa or Makayla. (my name is Melissa) and poeple always spell my name wrong, even though I know it is not too common like other names. I think that is a good new years resolution. My sister when she was little couldn't say her letter s so when she said her real name stephaine it came out dafenie. So for the whole year everybody thought she was named after scooby doo!

  12. LOL @ Mayaboo! That is funny about Scooby Doo.
