  1. My Cholesterol is through the roof! He put me on meds to bring it down and I am on a strict diet(No more Christmas cookies or Baileys for a while!) I am also quitting smoking, I have the chantrix, And I will start it 1/1/09 I've been wanting to quit so after being yelled at I will do it! I also have Bronchitis, which I knew last night when I went into a coughing fit! So I'm on antibiotics for that! Now here is where I need my TDK family!
1st: I need no or low cholesterol recipes!
2nd: your support on stopping smoking!
    3rd: Your Love!
    Thanks all
    Peace

  2. Oh no, Dorie! I'm sorry you're sick and alarmed about your high cholesterol. Maybe you and Karen can support eachother while you quit smoking?

  3. Dorie, I too went thru this minus the the bronchitis!!! I did the Chantrix and it made it so easy..but don't stop taking it just because you have quit..follow the program thru the full 12 weeks!!! Good luck and add some Omega 3 to the daily diet and it will also help with the good cholesterol...We are all behind you!!!

  4. Wow a doctor that yells at his patients. Very rare. He must care about you. Dorie, please take care of yourself. Your body is trying to tell you something and I think you need to listen to it. It's a new year coming up, time for new habits to form.

  5. Well, at least after this you will be nice and healthy! :)
Maybe treat yourself to some yummy Cherrios, it lowers cholesterol too! Good luck!

  7. MB made me think of something. I could be wrong but it seems to me I read years ago that walnuts helped bring down cholesterol. That would be easy to snack on and productive.

  8. Dorie here is a list of some of the foods you should and shouldn't have. Actually the "should have" list is pretty good. I got it from a physicians website:

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What sort of foods are healthy choices?

Lowering your cholesterol level by eating healthy foods low in fat is easier than you might think. It mostly takes a bit of common sense and a real interest in improving your health. You don't have to quit eating your favourite foods, although you might need to eat them less often or sometimes replace them with healthier choices. Foods low in total carbohydrates, saturated and trans-fatty acids, but high in complex carbohydrates, protein, mono- and polyunsaturated fat can help you lose weight.

    Eat more of these foods:

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish and plant source

Fish, poultry without the skin, lean beef
    Skim or low-fat milk
    Sherbet, sorbet, ice milk
    Egg whites
    Steamed vegetables
    Baked potatoes
    Clear soups
Unsaturated vegetable oils: corn, canola, safflower, sesame, sunflower, olive, soybean
    Angel food cake
Graham crackers, animal crackers, fig bars, vanilla wafers, lady fingers
Pretzels, air-popped popcorn, bagels, English muffins
Pancakes or cereal with low-fat milk
    Fruit

    Eat less of these foods
    Sausage, organ meats (like liver)
    Whole milk
    Ice cream
    Egg yolks
    Buttered or fried vegetables
    French fries
    Creamed soups
Saturated fats: butter, coconut oil, palm oil, lard, bacon fat
    Cheesecake
    Pastries, doughnuts
    Potato chips
    Refined carbohydrates and sugar
    Eggs and bacon

  9. Oatmeal is good for lowering cholesterol. I have no suggestions for quitting smoking, just lots of good wishes and positive thoughts. You CAN do this and you MUST do this - we need you around here!

  10. Dorie, you can do this!! I've never smoked but I do know that stopping is hard. Hard does not equal impossible! You can do it and you will be much healthier.

I have to run some errands but will post some recipes for you when I get home.

  11. Dorie if you have half the luck with Chantrix that I did you will find that quitting smoking with this program is much easier than you think. Very soon, you will not want to smoke! Be careful though to hang around smokers too much after the 12 weeks is up..I had to restart the meds because of Ron!!

  12. 2BP what is Chatrix? Did you eventually give up smoking? I need to make that a New Years resolution I think. I haven't mentioned it before because to be honest, I wasn't ready but I can see my attitude is changing and I think its time to take the step.

  13. Dorie, can't help you with the no or low cholesterol recipes but I can help with the other 2.

Not only will I support you with the no smoking, I will join you. I have also decided that as of 1/1/09 I am going to quit. We can lean on each other.

Much love and support coming your way.

  14. I'm also wondering what Chantrix is. I don't smoke but I have some friends that really could use some help quitting. Is it a prescription med? (And do they make one that will make me want to stop eating? LOL)

  15. Wow Dorie....You and I are in the same boat! I'm struggling hard with the cigarettes. Some days are better than others. The food isn't so hard...If it's yummy and fattening...I can't eat it! =(

  16. Hi Dorie,

For cholesterol, always remember that fiber is your friend. The more the merrier. Whole wheat is a wonderful source. Check out the boxes of cereal and look for fiber content. Oats have some but not as much as wheat. Many fruits and vegetables have good amounts too. There's two kinds of fiber: soluble (fruit & vegetables) and insoluble (grains).

  18. Hi Dorie, I take flax seed oil, capsule form, when I asked for it the health food store clerk asked if I was taking it for cholesterol. I told him no, I take it for the hot flashes. It apprently is good for both, hot flashes and cholesterol. I quit smoking using Wellbutrin. I was a very casual smoker though, I would smoke for 5 years, quit for 2,smoke some more and then quit. The last time I quit, I decided that I didn't want to suffocate to death and that with the wellbutrin did the trick. Good luck to all those that are attempting to quit smoking, you can do it!

  19. Wow..I was just thinking how amazing it must be to have the same doctor for 30 yrs! That is sooooo awesome. That is a relationship you could really trust. If you haven't noticed before...I don't put alot of stock into drs. Sorry..just my experiences...I know there are many great docs...once bitten twice shy! =)

  20. *looks around to see if CCM is here and whispers, "Tinafish, does the flax seed oil help with the personal summers?"*

  21. I didn't know what Chantix is either so I looked it up and it sounds like it has a good success rate.

  22. I just got back the test results on my lab work done yesterday. Cholesterol level is 215 which I believe to be borderline high. I am waiting for my doctor to be back in town so I can go over the results with her. According to the tests and the guidelines, I seem to be okay but then again, I am not a medical person and am not sure.

  23. Ok..Now to get to the meat of the matter..Does anyone know how much this Chantrix costs. I know that the savings from the cigarettes should counter it but my budget is a real train wreck and I have to consider these probabilities. I'm finding the patches are not as effective at home as they were when I was in the hospital. *Gee..I guess the no-smoking rules had something to do with it..doh* I've tried the Commit lozenges (cappuccino flavored) and they really strike me as invasively strong and melt way too slowly. Almost feels like they're eating through your cheeks. Ugh!

  24. Karen, it looks like a four week starter kit is around $174. I have kept digging because I just have never heard of it. And, like ALL drugs, there is some controversy about this one. There are also many success stories. It warrants a good discussion with your doctor. http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/05/30/as-bad-news-mounts-chantix-prescriptions-crumble/

SMM, 215 is borderline high. But you have to look at the HDL/LDL ratio to really know if your cholesterol is too high.

  25. Thanks WWM! =) Without health ins. I don't really have a doctor. So I'm kinda wingin' it for now. When I go in for my return visit in Jan w/ the nurse practitioner they set me up with after the hospital emergency, I guess I'll discuss it with him.

Posted 1 year ago by Karenopa #

  26. There's lots of information about it on the internet, Karen. Some good, some bad. It definitely is something that you should read about to better understand some of the issues involved.

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  27. I'm beginning to see that. If there's any chance of it having a depressive effect on me AT ALL...then it's not worth even doing the research. I'd be better off trying to quit with the Commit or Patches. I'm feeling quite a bit better now though than I have in a long, long time. The changes I've made in my diet already in the past 6 weeks are even showing in a little weight loss. Amazing what butter, rootbeer and coffee creamer can do when consumed daily. Hey..who knows..maybe by this next summer I'll be back in a swimsuit! =D *I'm being facicious (sp?)*LOL!

  28. i can recommend a good stop smoking aid as its one i have have personal experience from.I used it 6 years ago and literally stopped dead overnight. its a book called "allan carr - easyway to stop smoking" and you can buy on Amazon. I smoked quite heavily come the end, about 40 a day, so thought it was going to be really hard. 6 weeks after i stopped, my Mother read it and stopped too, and she had been smoking around 38 years! i can't recommend it highly enough.

Posted 1 year ago by Pika #

  29. Pika thank you for reminding me about that book. I do remember reading about it before and everyone who ever tried it seems to have had success in quitting. I will go and get it next week and will make my New Years resolution. I don't smoke heavily so I thought it would be easy for me to quit. For some reason though I just can't do it. Maybe this book will set me on the right track.
