An Unexpected Intro...

(28 posts)
  1. So today my 8 year old Cocker Spaniel, Charlie, ventured upstairs into the kitty's room when I had her in my room. He ate most of her wet food and drank out of her water... I hope he doesn't get sick!

I brought the kitten (not knowing that the dog was in there) into the room again in my arms, and she didn't do anything at the sight of him. She perked her ears up a bit but that was it! The dog didn't even notice her, he was too busy sniffing and all that.

I am getting a baby gate tomorrow for that room from a guy off Craigslist. There are actually 2 for a good price, so I'm getting them both and I will section off that room and the top of the stairs so that there are no more issues like this. They should be introduced slowly and on MY terms at first! Let's hope that it continues to go well though...

  3. Good Morning Jen.
Relax! Don't forget to breathe! They will do just fine.

  4. Thanks, I'm breathing, I was nervous at first but the kitten and dog seem to be adjusting great! I am going to introduce them further today, with the dog on a leash of course so he doesn't lunge at her out of excitement. You guys rock, I don't know what I'd do without this great forum!

  6. Thanks LV! I am going to try and make her a page soon on Catster or something once I get her paperwork in the mail and get more pictures of her! The stupid camera is still acting up...

  7. Well we had our first OFFICIAL intro today! It went fine. Toby ventured into the kitchen, where Dad had Charlie on a leash. At first she DARTED out of there so fast, but then I picked her up gently and brought her about 8 feet from Charlie's view when she came near the kitchen again. She was fine. Then I let her down and she even came back into the kitchen on her own to "investigate." Charlie just sat there watching her, then went completely back to normal once she left! I'm really pleased at the way things are going. Thanks so much for bearing with me so far!

  8. Breathing is a good thing Jen! Keep up the good work.

  9. What cute visuals, Jen! Especially Charlie eating all of Toby's food!

Don't worry that you get nervous about Toby - it's just because you've already fallen in love with her! I've had kitties all my life but when we got our girls I just freaked out over everything - getting them spayed hurt me more than them, I think!

    You're doing great!

  10. Jen, animals are amazingly receptive, especially in loving homes! Son has two cats and a ferret that live together running around all the time, and it's the little ferret that rules the roost! She loves to play with his youngest cat (Venus), and they wrestle around and roll all together all the time. At first I was worried for the ferret, but she does most of the "attacking" and if the cat gets too rough, she nips her and lets her know! That little thing holds her own!!!! I call her "your badness" because she's always in everything. If you have something in a bag or box, she is in it as soon as you set it down. They are so cute together!

  11. Haha, that's so cute! Thanks for sharing! I just played with Toby for a long time, while Charlie slept in the kitchen. Toby ventured downstairs again and Dad put the dog on the leash (just in case he woke up). Charlie stayed SOUND asleep, and Toby got a little closer to him! I think things are going pretty darn well...

Afterwards, we went back to her room and she fell asleep in my lap! It was SO adorable! Finally I had to get going for dinner, but I wish I coulda stayed there all night with her! She was actually fine with being left in her room that time; sometimes she really tries to dart into the hallway but I guess I really tuckered her out!

  13. I'm trying desperately to get my camera to work; I think the battery charger might actually be broken so I'm off to Radio Shack soon to try to get a new one. Wish me luck!

And yes, thank you SO much again for the other thread! You are too kind!

  14. Hehehe I know how much it takes to have a kitten brought into a home with a dog that is older and not used to cats! maxie and Patches still meet through a screen door on my bedroom door!

I just added another thought on the other thread for you too! Heheheh! I planned for 8 years and been begging my parents for 15 years so 8 years of research and edcuating myself prepared me very well!

  15. Wow it is a good size! Toby is jealous... for now!

Posted 3 years ago by Jen #

  16. Heheheh! It has plenty of room! And maxie is a bigger then usual baby so Toby should be able to manage quite comfortably! Oh just one more thing! When using the playpen and you leave the door or doors open on the bottom use a small bungee to keep them from being close if the door gets accidenently closed especially if food water asnd litter are inside!

  17. Ooh good thing to remember, thanks! I just spent a good time with Toby and my friend Ed came over. She did seem a little stressed at first but then quickly adapted, and really seemed to take to him. I think it may take her a bit longer to get used to men than women though in general.

  18. Sometimes it does! But the more they trust you and that you will keep them safe the more confident they are and the more bold they become!

  22. Hi Ange and Jen. Just got home from work, have my feet soaking in a tub of rosemary bathsalts and couldn't resist Maxie pics and the picture of your doggie Charlie, Jen. Cute doggie and I love the Maxie-passed-out pictures snuggled-with-you Ange!

  23. My cat Sophie loves dogs. When she was a kitten she bonded with my dog Lucy who became her mother. She always purred for the dog but not for me!! When I got home last night she was so happy to see our dog, Smitty. Make a dogster page for your dog when you do a catster one. Smitty doesn't have as many friends as the the cats and it is quite upsetting to him. LOL
