Worry About Redford

  1. Now with Victor in the hospital, Redford has not been getting his sub-q fluids for his chronic renal failure. I don't know how to do it as Victor always does it. I feel so idiotic for never learning-I should have been better prepared for this kind of emergency. It has been 4 days since his last treatment. So far he seems ok, though a little quieter than usual, but that could be from missing Victor since they are so close. Our vet is a mobile clinic and they come to the house for all visits, but they are closed till Monday. I am just hoping he will be ok without the fluids till then. If they come out Monday I will definitely have them teach me how to do it. I just couldn't take it if something happened to him just because I didn't think ahead to learn that procedure.
Victor is waiting for surgery to cut out the rest of the abscess. His Coumadin level is too high to do it today, so it will probably be Monday.
OK, just needed to vent my worry--between Victor and Redford, my "boys" are worrying me! And I feel so guilty about not learning Redford's treatment before this and not anticipating that there might be a time when Victor couldn't do it. Sigh-I feel like a bad fur-mom!
    PS-it snowed here--again. Blagh.

RW, check this out; it gives pretty detailed description. It is really not that difficult, especially if your kitty is used to it and able to stay still.
Other option is to have the vet do it and instruct you that one time. Best wishes

  3. Well RW I will add Redford to the prayer list, but I those are very good instructions that TL posted...You might give it a try..

  4. RW, I'm sorry that you have to worry about this on top of Victor. Actually giving Sub-Q fluids is not hard at all. Do they have it set up like an IV? I used to just hang the bag on a door (I would just hang it off a hinge). Then you should be able to take a fresh needle and put it on the end of the IV tube. The needle goes in under the skin of kitty - you just pull the skin up and stick the needle in under the skin, the shoulder area works the easiest. Once the needle is in, you start the IV drip - there is probably a clip of some kind on the IV tube - and let the fluid drain from the bag until it reaches the amount Reford needs. (The bag is marked by unit). Then clip the tube again and remove the needle. It's not hard because you are not trying to get the needle into a vein or anything - just under the skin.

  5. RW, I'm so sorry you have another worry on top of worrying about Victor, it sounds like TL and NNGM have given some good instructions... I'll add Redford to my prayers as well and send positive thoughts for and purrs for you all.

  8. Oh Raining Wolf, now this on top of worrying about Victor. Are you alright? You don't need anything do you? I will add Redford to my prayer list as well.

  9. Are there any other TDK'ers in Portland? Giving sub-Q fluid is sometimes easier with two people, especially if you haven't done it before.

  10. RW, test if Redford's neck skin is 'tented'. It should be elastic and if it isn't try to give him fluids yourself. It really isn't so difficult. {{{Hugs}}} I'll pray for the handsome red man too.

  11. I thought that Elaine from Portland was living in Portland but the TDK list says she's in Milwaukie, Or. Don't know if that's close to RW or not. I know I should know but I've only lived in S. Oregon for two years. =( I agree that this might be much easier with an extra set of hands Rainingwolf. These things add so much more pressure to life..please don't worry too much. It sounds like Redmond is ok for now. The Mobile Vet may be your best bet.

  12. Adding Redford to my prayers. Is there someone who could come and help with this? Even a little fluid would help ease your mind if you could get it done before Monday.

  13. You could always call the vet, explain the situation, and ask if you can come in to have them show you how to do the Sub-Cutaneous drip. As others have said, it's not really that hard to do. (It might be easy for me to say that, as the male kitty-parent during various relationships, it fell to me to do the deed). The key thing is to be careful when puncturing the skin, as it is very easy to punch a second hole into a pinch of skin. You will know that you made a second hole when the solution runs over the cat's fur and onto the table/floor.

  15. i went off the ventilator to try to do Redford's sub-q, but had breathing problems, and couldnt do it while ON the vent because my tubes got tangled with his IV set. now I am shaking so hard from being off my vent for a time that i can barely type this. Maybe will try again later. He is doing all right for now and is drinking water. Sweet baby he is trying to comfort me and I jmust want to cuddle HIM! IB, my vet is mobile and closed today-I am homebound in a wheelchair and on a ventilator--I cant go anywhere to have them show me...
I will try later-the instructions are well done. I took a xanax to stop the shakes and its helping. thank you all for the support--i will do it after awhile.

  17. Oh, RW, I'm sorry. Please take care of yourself, okay?
I don't really know about sub-q's but if they're for hydrating him, maybe you could have someone bring over some plain Pedialyte for him to drink to get extra hydration?

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  18. RW , i hope you are feeling better. i am gald he is drinking some water. thats a good sign. i would just let him contuine to drink on his own , so far so good. i like the pedilyte idea, that would be great if you could get some.

i am working saturday and sunday.. please keep us posted and i will check back on monday.

  19. RW, I will pray that Redford is going to be okay. If Victor can give him his medicine, I am sure you can learn too. When your kitties need you, you can do anything!

  20. Still thinking of you and Redford RW.. Continued Prayers.

  21. RW, I can't stop thinking about you, Victor and Redford and wondering how you're doing. I hope all's well.

  22. I am very concerned for you, Victor, and Redford. I have been researching assistance on the web for your area and find that there is a gaping hole arround Pets in Temporary Emergency need. The ASPCA provides medical for their sheltered pets but there does not seem to be anything other than a list of professional services advertised with links. Not that a professional paid visit is out of the question. It is a holiday and none look like an emergency provider.

It occurs to me that there needs to be a "Meals on Wheels" type of group for pets of shut-ins.

In the abscence of this, have you asked your other support groups including the staff at the hospital where Victor is if they can help? Perhaps a cat loving nurse could help you out.
