I just adopted a kitten saturday from the Humane Society and I'm starting to notice that he's having discharge from his eyes and is breathing weird. He has been sleeping behind my bed so I'm wondering if it could be the dust? Should I take him to the vet to be safe?

I think my kitten might be sick

Hi Rachel, welcome to TDK Chat. If you're at all concerned, then yes, check with a vet - a phone call could be enough; I'd check with the branch of the Humane Society you got him from first. Good luck, please keep us posted, once we hear about possible sick kittens we get worried!

You shuld always take a newly adopted kitty to the vet, Rachel, to have him checked out. Milo had symptoms like that when I got him and he was diagnosed with a URI and needed antibiotics. URIs are pretty common in kittens, but they need treatment for them.
The two places I adopted from gave me vouchers to take my newly adopted kitty to a vet. Did you get anything like that?

Welcome to TDK Rachel, call the vet and as MCW says check with the place you got your kitty from to see if any of the other kits have similar symptoms. Do keep us posted about what you find out.

Hi Rachel. All the above is excellent advice. It could be that the kitten is staying behind the bed because it is in a new and strange environment. Kittens prefer a small space at first because it gives them a more secure feeling after being in a cage. Do you have any other pets at home? Most cats act like that when you first bring them home. They need to get used to new smells, new sounds and will slowly come out as they become more secure. However since you also notice the eye discharge it is worth calling the place you got him and see what they say.

That's good to hear Rachel, let us know what the vet says - then tell us a little bit more about your new kitten!

Hi Rachel and welcome!
Upper respiratory is very common in kitties adopted from shelter situations...as stated in previous posts, you should bring him into the vet that works with the Humane Society..they'll most likely give him a round of antibiotics such as Clavamox, and he'll be feeling better shortly!
Congrats on your new kitty! -
When I first got my kitten, Mickey(back in November). I had adopted him from a pound and he had a pretty bad upper respiratory infection. Before he came home with me he had to get neutered and the vets there said he was ok, but later on he started sneezing, he had discharge in eyes, runny nose, etc. I then took him to the vet I normally go to and they gave me a round os antibiotics.
