  1. Hello friends need some help. Kay is babysitting Dakoda now that her mom has a job. She was very colicky today and has had espisodes in the past. What could we give her to calm this and could it be caused by her formula? They don't want to change cause it worked for Nikki but this is a different child and they needed to change a few before one worked for Nikki. I know we have nurse friends here and any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much. Love Mama Lynn and Kay

  2. *glances around to see if TL is watching*

Lynn, this is sort of an old Hispanic remedy. But I have worked in pedi clinics in El Paso and so am very fond of some (but only some) of the curandero remedies. This one does work - usually. It's chamomile tea, which is manzanilla tea in Spanish. The chamomile is a smooth muscle relaxer and that's why it can help. So if little Dakota could have some chamomile tea in a bottle, it might help. It's worth a try!

But.... it could be her formula :-(

  3. when i worked peds we gave the baby mylocon drops ( with a dr's order) i think they sell it over the counter now. also lay the baby on her tummy . i haven't had young baby's or colicky kids in ages. i use to put my kids in a warm tub and try to relax their tummy and burp them . is she burping? i am sure you will get plenty more responses.. keep me posted

  4. I'm not a doctor or nurse, so I can only speak from experience - with two very colicky babies...... laying them on their little tummies and giving a gentle back massage worked wonders for mine, also, diligent burping.... many times gas is the culprit, and both massage and gentle patting help get those bad "bubbles" out! Sometimes it took half an hour or more for me to work a belch out of my youngest, but boy did she feel better when we got a big one out!!! :)

  5. Here goes...1st , Lynn it is with the greatest of joys that I read you post today, so happy that what we are talking about here are regular baby issues!! (not that last worry about your precious baby taht we discussed before)
Having said that, colic can be so diheartening to caregivers and unfortunately there are a lot of placebos ( I have not tried WWM's recommendation, but certaibly worth a try) and no real answers.
The Amer Acad of pediatrics has this to say:
    http://www.aap.org/sections/media/Colic.htm

To summarize...a lot of nothing! This is what they have had to say as long as I can remember.
Most of the prescribed remedies have not proven to be helpful in controlled studies. But tell that to a Mom who felt that her baby did benefit.
Truly, there is no known cause and no real remedy except to tell you "this too will pass"...and then come the teenage worries..
Making sure the baby is well burped has always been a nursing recommendation and since they have fed many more babies than I , I would certainly make sure this is the case.
Having said all this, formula intolerance DOES run in families and if there is a previous history of true formula intolerance, a switch may be worth a trial period. The reason many good pediatricians don't like to easily recommend a switch (whereas some not so good ones will do so if only to get Mom off their back), is because often the switch to soy or other more elemental formulas has some nutritional draw backs.
Hope this helps, kisses to sweet Dakoda

  6. TL has an excellent point about the formula intolerance..... didn't think about the connection until now, but youngest has a lactose intolerance, and we didn't know until she was about 15......once we switched to lactose free milk her stomach aches literally all but disappeared!!! Makes sense that formula intolerance could be a factor.

  7. The medical community is finally becoming more aware of how many people are effected by Celiac Disease - 1 in every 133. The symptoms mimic a lot of other problems so it's hard to diagnose. For a long time doctors didn't even consider it as the source of symptoms.

Celiac is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack the villi in the small intestine. It can cause colicky symptoms in infants - gas, abdominal bloating and pain and other digestive symptoms are the most common in children.

If you talk to the pediatrician about changing formula, ask to try a gluten free one. Like lactose intolerance, the faster way to start getting answers is by eliminating the possible source. If neither gluten free and/or lactose free formulas help, there are other special-need dietary formulas that might make a difference.

A colicky baby is hard enough to deal with when you are a grown-up; it's even harder to think about the distress the poor baby is in.

  8. Very good point CBM, but most infant formulas, if not all, are gluten free, so this is not usually a concern while the child is on a formula only diet.

  9. I thank you all for your advice. I don't know if it is a change of schedule, which it probably has something to do with it. It took a lot of formulas to get Nikki to where she was ok. I think changing the formula, if only for two days or so, won't hurt the child, but I am not her dr and do not try to be. Each child is different, just because this is what worked for Nikki may not be the best for Dakoda. Very gassy, and ok, give her meds for that. Maybe I am going off here, but why give meds if changing the formula, or at least trying that is not an option. I guess given our age, we tried different formulas before meds. We shall go with the flow and try our best. I thank you for all of your advice, if you think of anything else, and we will try those things, please post them. Much love to the family for your help. Thank you. Mama Lynn and Kay

I know this is a kitty site and in keeping with that, Lucky and Lady are doing their best to put up with a crying baby that sounds like a cat in distress and they don't know what to do with this!!! Although, to see Lucky uncomfortable and smelling around the baby trying to figure this one out, does make me laugh. They have checked out the pac and play she sleeps in, sniffed all the toys, laid on the blankets for the baby and follow us up and down as we try to comfort her, all is well in the house. They are most exhausted by the time she goes home and lay down and sleep! Tomorrow is another day!~

  10. Tl, thank you so much for your posts, you don't know how much that has meant to us over the last couple of months. I don't know what her needs are, being regulated by her dr. We have given her mother our take on what we see. She said she will call her dr and go from there. I don't want us to do anything to hurt the baby and so much has changed since we had kids. Thanks so much for your help.

  11. I have heard that caraway tea works wonders.

You boil some caraway seeds in some water for probably about 10 mins after it gets rollin' good, and strain it, let it cool and have the baby drink that.

Hope that helps if none of the other suggestions work :)

  12. Lynn, I would have to agree with you that a change in formula would likely do no harm and may help. You are also right that it is her doctor in joint agreement with Mom who should decide.
Best wishes to you as I know there is little more upsetting than seeing baby uncomfortable and crying and feeling helpless.

  13. I have heard that poi would help. Now, I don't if you can even find it where you are.... or find taro root and make your own. I can't confirm this, and I have not tried it. I wish you the best of luck with the colic !

  14. both of my kids had colic so bad it made ME cry! We had to hire a nanny for the first 5 months of both their lives becuase colic was so bad no one got any sleep. Here were the things that DID work for us

Peppermint water...8oz of warm water with a peppermint desolved in it, give 4oz at a time..this worked sometimes

GRIPE WATER worked WONDERS for both of mine! other then that we did a ton of walking and bouncing, oh and we did change formula 4 times for both kids, what worked for my oldest DID NOT work for my youngest.

  15. When my son had colic, I would lay him across my knees, slightly bounce him and rub his back. It worked every time. Good luck.

  20. Scarver you reminded me off the way my Mum would hold our 2 girls when they had sore tummies. She would sit babies bottom on one thigh and let baby lean across the other thigh and then gently rub their backs. 'urp' was the usual reaction. Meegz my first was a terror for vomiting up straight after her feeds until we found that a pacifier popped in her mouth and not being moved for 30 minutes stopped any and all vomiting and tummy aches. Eventually we eliminated the pacifier.
I hope these ideas help you and Kay with Dakoda Lynn. Poor wee thing with a sore tummy.
