Ginny and FondaHonda...your stories crack me up. My sister is a teacher also, and often shares her frustration which is mostly with parents! She has complained to me that they only care about the Halloween party as though that is what is important, not learning. My favorite story though is the one about the mother who came up to her and complained, "When are yuh gonna teach my son his manners? Cuz he ain't got none."

About the kid who does exploratory surgery on his nose: could you pull him aside and give him a rundown of major social turnoffs? It sounds majorly condescending and intrusive, but there is a very good chance that his parents have never explained these things to him.
These days, teachers get burdened with tasks that parents should be doing, and this may be one of them. Sometimes, unless someone tells them, the kid has no idea that he is offensive to anyone.
