  1. We just got a new kitten last week and he will not stop meowing! He meows 24/7, keeps us up at night and everything. He's 5 1/2 mths, male and neutered.

We play with him whenever we're home, we cuddle him, he always has fresh food and water.

We got him from a shelter where there were about 30 other cats for him to play with so we think he is lonely since my husband and I both work full time.

What do we do to stop the meowing???

    Thanks for the help!

  2. Can you add a buddy to the household? Having a friend to play with when you are away, or even when you are home and cannot be the constant companion your fellow craves could help lots.

  3. You are probably right about his being lonely. Get him a little brother or sister. If that's not possible, try leaving the radio or television on during the day. You can also get him a stuffed animal and put a ticking clock in his bed or inside the toy.

If you haven't already taken him to the vet, make him an appointment. It's unlikely that his problem is physical, but it would be a good idea to make sure.

  4. I second what Ailuromaniac said! Get anohter kitten for you little guy to play with, they will give eachother companionship!

  5. Oh, you could also see if there is a responsible neighbourhood kid who might be willing to come in after school and play with the kitten. That way kitty would have company and you would have a already trained cat sitter.

  6. All good suggestions but I go for 'get another kitty'.

  7. Talk to him a lot when you are home. Not just kitten baby talk but talk to him like he is a person who has come to visit. Some cats crave "conversation" Leaving the radio on a talk station is also a good idea for when you are gone. I do not recommend leaving the TV on animal planet as hearing other animal noises might rile him up or scare him. C-span or a news channel is good for all day talk.

  8. He must be part Siamese. Please get another bud for him.

NOTE: If your cat has Siamese ancestry, every thought that goes through your cat's brain comes out of his or her mouth. Every single one. EVERY SINGLE ONE.

  9. Emma...how many Siamese do you or have you had? Hahaha. It sounds like you've had alot of practice with them. lol.

  10. Emma you are so right. I have a siamese and a balinese (both rescues) at home. The calico is almost as chatty. The thoughs that go through to orientals' brains, every evening, are: "Is it time for squishy food yet? No? Well, how about now?" Repeat endlessly until the magic hour when it is time for their dollop of squishy food laced with nutritional supplements.

  11. Are you playing with him? Do you have toys for him? What about a cat tree? Maybe you need to play with him a little more, especially before you go to bed. You might consider if you have a cat tree putting it close to a window so he can see outside. I can understand him being lonely but if he is continuing to meow when you are home he might just be bored.

  12. 2 is much easier than one!!

  13. The only question that comes to mind is if he is being kept out of your room overnight. If so, your kitten may be meowing to be let in with his "purrents."

  14. Ditto with all of the above, especially with the addition of another kitten...two means that they can entertain themselves, become best buds, and just hang out together. The meowing is probably because your baby is lonely, and some just want to talk all the time.

  15. We have lots of toys for him and play with him when we wake up in the morning before work, I usually come home for lunch and play with him then and we also play with him when we come home from work and before bedtime.

He sleeps in our bedroom with us.

I wish we could get another kitten for him so he wouldn't be so lonely but we just don't have the money to be able to do that right now.

Thank you so much for all your help. We left the tv sound on today so we'll see how he is when we get home. We are also going to go buy him a toy that suction cups to the fridge so he can play when we're gone.

  16. SAS54, chances are good that he sleeps most of the day when you're away. When you get home, he's well rested and wants to play! It would be ideal to find some time every single day to be able to play with him, whether with a Cat Dancer, a laser pointer, or perhaps just with crumpling up paper into balls and throwing them for him - again, and again, and again!

  17. Welcome to TDK Chat S&S - you've got some good advice here, hope it's helped! What's the noisy one's name? Any pictures you can share?

Posted 3 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  18. His name is Geoffrey and I don't know how to post pictures?!

    Posted 3 years ago by sarahandsteve54 #

  19. I've just seen your other thread on teething, and tried to help with some pictures advice!!! You can end up chasing your own tail in here... ;o)

  20. Ooh I love the name Geoffrey. If I had been able to have children the first boy would have been Geoffrey. Did you talk to him a lot last night? At night when he meows do you hold him close to you and if so does he stop meowing? Just be patient and loving with him.

  21. Go to your Profile (top of the page) and click on EDIT. Then you can make a gavitar to replace the patchwork square on your posts. You have to have the picture you want uploaded to your computer first - most of us use pictures of our babies.

If you click on some of the pictures, you go to our Catster pages. That's a free website where you can post pictures of your cats and tell their stories.

  22. Last night we did talk to him a lot and he seemed to calm down a bit. We try to hold him put he doesn't seem to like to be held, is that weird?

I just made a catster page!

    Posted 3 years ago by sarahandsteve54 #

  23. Hurrah!! Now edit your profile, pasting the catster URL into the website bit. We can then click on your avator (which will still be the graphic until you change that) and see Geoffrey!

Posted 3 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  24. ...and don't worry about the being held stuff. Some cats like it, some don't. Some grow into it. One of ours, Eric, hates being picked up, but loves stamping all over us, headbutting anything he can, purring as he goes :o)

  25. Yay!! I did it! You guys can now see my little man!

    Posted 3 years ago by sarahandsteve54 #

  26. Hi Sarah and welcome to TDK. I see you are from Ontario. I am in Toronto so I am waving at your from -20 degree T.O.

When cats are kittens they are often to busy to want to be held. They will let you hold them when they feel like it, not when you want to. Usually that is before they go to sleep. Geoffrey needs to get into a routine. You have had him less than 2 weeks so everything is new to him. He is excited, maybe a little apprehensive and getting used to his surroundings which would also account for the continual meowing. It will probably take 2 or 3 weeks for him to settle down and I think you will find he isn't meowing as much. He is a cutie and I left him a treat on his Catster page :)

  27. Hi Sarah welcome to TDK! you little man is a beauty! I have to say, you may be able to "affordably" get him a little bud if you go to some of your rescue societies, or humane society shelters.... explain your situation, many these days are discounting adoptions because there are so many.... years ago (when we were first married)... time warp.... Hubbs and I got a big black kitten named Buc... he was 1/2 meezer and the most vocal I've ever seen!!! We both worked, and he would wait by the door for us to get home and play with him!!!! When he was about 6 mos. old, we felt so sorry for him, we adopted a kitten "Winston"... well, Buc was our cat, but Winston was Buc's cat. He love that little fellow, and they were best friends and both lived to a ripe old age.... I always like to think of them together in heaven!!!!

  28. Thanks for all the great help everyone.....but he's still meowing like crazy!!! We are at our witts end. He meows constantly and we don't know how to get him to stop!! We play with him all the time and cuddle him, he's very happy he's just really vocal.

What is everyone's opinion on spraying him with water? Or does anyone have any other advice?

PLEASE HELP US!!! My husband is going to flip his lid soon!

  29. Have you thought about getting him a playmate? I had one cat for 10 years and wouldn't have even thought about getting another! Well, I rescued my Bailey-girl from the flooded parking lot and she and my Spanky were the best of friends (yes, it took a few weeks for Spanky to get used to her). They would lick each other (at the same time) and sleep together on the chair. I loved watching how much they loved each other. I will NEVER have just 1 kitty again!

  30. We can't afford another cat, we are saving right now for our first home. Its just not in our budget.
    Any other ideas?
