  1. S & S -- it really doesn't cost that much more for two than it does for one. And, the extra little cost might be worth it if it quiets up your kitty

  3. You might want to invest in a Feliway diffuser. Feliway has a calming effect on cats. You can get it in pet stores, but it can be found online less expensively. I heartily second the idea of getting another kitten. They can meow their hearts out all day long while you are gone instead of Geoffrey sitting home lonely anxiously waiting for you and your husband to get home.

My daughter has a cat that doesn't meow. She screams! My daughter responds in a calm voice saying "and then what?" The cat loses interest after a while and settles down. She's a grumpy thing (the cat, not my daughter!). :)

I would not spray Geoffrey with water. I don't think it would make him be quiet. He is doing what cats do. They meow. Unfortunately, you ended up with a very vocal cat compared to others.

  4. Milo and Bobby's mom discovered that changing the cat food made a big difference in her Bobby's yowling. If you do decide to give that a try, remember to switch out slowly so that you don't upset his little tummy.

You might check with your vet or local rescue for a second kitty who has already been fixed and had his/her shots. That would cut down on the cost of having two.

  5. Both my kits meowed almost constantly when I first got them, and one piece of advice I got from the Humane Society about the meowing was to leave them alone when they meowed -- the mewling was just curiosity/adjusting; if I responded to the meowing I would only be reinforcing bad/unwanted behavior(s). I second everybody's suggestion about getting another kitten, though. So far, the basic care costs for both of my kits is only nominally greater than it would be if I just had one of them, and that's only really because my littlest one refuses to eat dry food. And having 2 really helps with other unwanted typically kitty traits, like waking me up at 4 AM to play.

  6. i have one suggestion but i do not think that you will take this advice. buy another cat maybe a male one might be better. if u do get one get one that is playful and is around your first cat's age.

  7. Aw, your little guy looks just like my Henry! They both have such little-man names. haha.

I know where you're coming from: Hen meowed constantly when we first got him too. It's a really good chance he's just a little lonely, or just really vocal. Henry calmed down after a little while. I still think he gets lonely during the day sometimes, and I wish I could get another kitty for him to play with, but my boyfriend won't let me. We're in the same boat as you: saving for the future, so another furball isn't really in the cards for us.

Just give it time, and try to tire him out as much as you can before bed time!

  8. I agree with the Feliway suggestion or you could try some of the cheaper alternatives. It could help him calm down. If he has Siamese in him, he is going to be vocal - period. Maybe not as much as he is right now, but he will always be a talker. I rescued a cat that is half Siamese and he only sings when he wants attention or to draw my attention to something - but it is loud. Water being sprayed on him did nothing to stop the behavior, so I do not think that is a good option. Do you have toys that you can wiggle - like birds feathers on a stick? I play very hard with my cats using those type toys twice a day. It may tired him out! It does mine. I understand that another cat would be too costly now, so I hope that you find some other viable options in these posts!

  9. Thanks so much for all the great advice!!
My husband and I were talking this morning and are now contemplating getting another kitten for Geoffrey to play with. Does anyone have any idea what the cost difference is between having one cat and two??

Thanks! We're hoping this will help him be less lonely, and thus stop his constant meowing.

  10. The cost difference between one cat and two cats is roughly $10 per month, factoring in the shots and vet visits, toys and treats.

However, that estimate does NOT include the mental health benefits that you and your husband and your darling Geoffrey will experience. In that regard, you'll save money!

  11. His face looks like my Patches--same expression! He should settle down eventually when he gets adjusted, but a playmate would be the best thing if you can swing it.
