  1. Well, we got some not so good news about our baby last night. Dr Fox called and told us that Andy is almost 100% Manx (which is very cool. In fact so cool that we have decided NOT to have him go to the spa. Actual tail-less not just stubby tails are rare, so he would be a great dad!), but he has a physical ailment that alot of Manx's that do not have any tail have. Since they are lacking the last 2 vertebre of their spines (which is where the tail begins) "Nilla Bean has the problem. This can cause problems from runny poopies to arthritis in his spine to us losing him as early as 3 yrs old. He doesn't seem to have any problems now, so we pray that our baby will be ok and with us for a long time. There isn't much that we or Dr Fox can do except feed him special food. So anyways, can Beans get some prayers from his fur-less aunties and uncles?

  2. You have mine. Manx are a really nice breed of cat. I think my Tessie was part Manx she had some of the characteristics only she had a long skinny tail. My brother called it a rat tail much to her disgust.

  5. I hope you don't lose him early, I'd like for him to be around enjoying your love for a long, long time. Knowing he is prone to problems will help you keep a wiser eye on him. My good thoughts are with you.

  7. Oh, darling 'Nilla Bean. Sending loads of positive energy that he is fine and with you for a very, very long time.

My first foster kittens happened when a stray cat I was feeding had kittens on my bed (I didn't even realise she was pregnant, just was surprised at how much the little butterball ate, doh!). One of the kittens, the only female, was a darling wee tortie Manx. At first I was petrified because she couldn't seem to use her back legs and I thought she was paralysed. The vet had to reassure me and sure enough, eventually she learned to walk but if she wanted to keep up with her brothers, she did the bunny hop/frog leap; it was the only way she could run. She had problems at that end with the poop thing too, I used to find little 'pellets' that she didn't even know she'd done. It nearly broke my heart when I had to give them up to forever homes -- she was a wicked, mischievous wee thing and totally the ringleader when it came to trouble. Still miss my bunnyhopping tortie!

  8. Nilla Bean, your mama and daddy want you around for a long, long time to come. Your job, as I see it, is to just be cool and love them for maybe 18 - 20 years. Then we might talk.

  10. OK, Nilla Bean. Your marching orders have been given you by WWM. You are made of sturdy stuff and have excellent staff so you'd better plan on being loved by them for a very long time!! :)

  11. Mama Terri I will pray for his continious health!

Are you really thinking of breeding him? If so I would like to let youknow a few things!

    1. breed him to a domestic long tailed female (rumpies to rumpies have a higher mortality rate in kittens)
    2. if he has the missing bones you really need to watch and be careful, we had a manx and she bred back to her father she was an outside kitty and well she was a barn cat not ours but lived on the farm my friends fmaily owns. When she bred back to her dad she had 3 kittens. One was paralyzed back legs, the other two were healthy and fine looking but then within weeks of the first babies passing the two girls went too!

So think carefully becuase the loss of any kittens would be heart wrenching!

  14. Does the vet think he's a pure breed? If he's not, then I belive he would be less likely to have the issues that the pure bred kitties have. In any case, I pray for a long happy life without a care in the world:)

  18. BCAM, sorry I'm just now catching up on this. I can feel your anxiety in your posts, and I understand better than you can imagine.

CJ is a purebred Manx, and was diagnosed with Manx Syndrome when she was a baby. She was deathly ill from the time I got her--at ten weeks--until she was about six months old. I was advised by vet after vet to put her down--for her "good" and my sanity. But I had total faith in her will to live (see my Gravatar for a picture of her when she was 3 months old.)

CJ's now two years, five months old and an unstoppable force of kitty energy!! She never walks anywhere--she runs! 'Nilla Bean will defy the odds, too, I promise! Your love will do the trick. I predict and long and healthy life for 'Nilla Bean!!!

  20. Precious little Andy, with all the love and care in your family, you're going to have a deliciously loving life. Prayers and gentle cuddles that you stay happy and healthy for many many years. (scritches under chin)

  21. My prayers to Andy! I wasn't aware that Manx have health problems from being tail-less. My Chance is part Manx and two years old. He has the "riser" that many Manx have. I will have to ask the vet, but I think Chance probably will be okay since he's only half Manx (the other half is Russian Blue).
