    Our 8 month old kitten has a stool that has not passed. Does anyone know what we should do. I did give him some baby food meat because it’s moist and mixed in a little bit of pumpkin because I read on the Hills Science Diet site that it was good fiber.

    Check w/ your vet before you do anything. There are all sorts of reasons why this might happen, some benign, some urgent, and the appropriate treatment could vary depending on the situation. I know vet bills are expensive but I’d still suggest calling the vet.

    Does your kitten typically suffer from constipation? Or is this a first time problem?

    This is the first time that he’s been constipated. I was able to hold him in the sink in warm water until the “plug” softened and came out. He stopped crying. I will check with our vet in the morning. I was sort of panicked. We have had cats forever and this is the first time we’ve dealt with this issue. Thank you for your help.

    Glad to hear that kitty is feeling better. {{{{HUGS to kitty}}}} {{{{HUGS to you}}}}

    Hope all turns out well and that some minor tweak of diet or such permanently solves the problem.

    Thank you so much for your concern. We have been changing back over to Flint River Ranch cat food. It is a great product, we’ve used it for years and maybe the conversion was too quick. The cost had gotten so high that we used Science Diet for a brief time and I know it’s good too but prefer the FRR. No dyes, no chemicals, etc. Again thank you.

    I’m just catching up on this thread. I’m so glad that your cat was able to get some relief from his constipation. He must have been miserable! Good thinking on the warm water bath. 🙂

    He has recovered from the shock of getting a “bath.” He seems to be back to normal now so I’ll be on the lookout for further signs of discomfort. Purr!

    My Meow Meow has issues in this are and now he gets a daily dose of those over the counter hairball remedy pastes. May want to ask the vet if its OK for an 8 month old

    Hi, we didn’t end up going to the vet because Whisper was busy playing and acting normal last night and today. I did give him a teaspoon of pumpkin mixed in a teaspoon of baby meat again this morning. I think all is well but frightening when I found him in that shape. Meow Meow might benefit with a little pumpkin too. Whisper wouldn’t eat it plain but gobbled it up in the baby food. Good luck and thank you all.

    Dktagirl, this used to happen about once a year to my female siamese named Jazz. You handled it *exactly* right, did everything perfectly. No need to see a vet once it’s gone. Keep your babies on the pumpkin, and wet food if they’ll eat it. If it happens again, off to the vet to be examined for a condition called “megacolon,” but the treatment will still be extra fiber in the diet and soft food.
