I left he 80's in the 80's

  1. A little while back J-man and I went shopping and I bought a heap of things on sale, there was no mirror so I asked J-man how I looked. I know you're cringing, but he did quite well :)
The problem is a short sleeved light jacket that has really puffy sleeves, I will try to post an image later. Not over the top, but thanks to being dressed in very puffy sleeves throughout my childhood (it was the style) I can't stand anything more than a slight puff (even if it is the style again).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to reduce the puff? I tried adding more pleats, but it just looked more and more bunched. I tried stitching the pleats down more and still no luck. I don't have a sewing machine either :(

    Any ideas welcome :)

  2. I will ask my Mum, Airy, she is a brilliant sewer. Can you just take them off altogether?

  3. Here's a link

Yes Jcat, it's gathered at the shoulder and then into the armband.
I would like to avoid unpicking it all at any cost as I don't have a sewing machine and would have to restitch it by hand.
do you think just ironing it down would take most of the puff out?

  4. Hi, Airy, I just rang my mum. Bad news -- no, if you want to get the puff out, you will have to unpick. Ironing won't do it. You need to reshape the sleeve at the top to get some of the extra material out.

Good news is that, especially if the jacket is unlined, my mum doesn't think it would be a big job at all unless you really really hate handsewing. You need to unpick at the top of the sleeve (not at the bottom cuff, I don't think but I'll check)and reshape the material. Easiest way to do that is if you have a paper pattern for a jacket sleeve in your size that you DO like. Iron out the puff sleeve, pin it to the pattern piece and recut the puff sleeve to fit the pattern. Then refit it into the top of the sleevehole.

If the jacket is lined, you will have to do that with the sleeve lining as well.

If you don't have a paper pattern there with you, my mum said she's happy to trace off one of hers if we can get your measurements. (Your mum has my email addy.) When I get my new scanner (next week hopefully) I could email it to you or we could pop it in the post...

Just off to watch my TV prog but back on a bit later... Good luck...

  5. Hmm, I'm very unconventional when it comes to my sewing. I never liked using patterns. Yes mother, I see you shrieking in the corner.
Reshaping won't be much of an issue, I do have a knack for getting it right without a pattern :)
Maybe I should just put up with the puffy sleeves. I hate it when trends return, especially ones that should stay buried like this one :)
Thanks Jcat, I'll let you know what I do.

  6. They don't look very puffy to me.... almost straight in fact....

Apparently big hair is coming back too (aaarrrrggghhhhh!)

Posted 3 years ago by jcat #

  7. LMAO at you Airy. What else have I scarred you with in the clothing line. Those sleeves don't look very puffed at all, just grin and wear it.

  8. lol, ok my question would be who really cares what the trends are??? Never one to follow them anyways, if one likes something and is comfortable with it (such as hair styles, never could do the BIG hair as mine was puffy enough with humidity as it was) then just go with it. But then again my favorites for clothing were always jeans with comfy tops, could do the Barbie Doll thing when I had too but ewwwww, lol.

  9. MS, the perils of growing up, my oldest always dressed like a bag woman as a child....nothing matched, not even socks. I let her be, her dad had fits when she dressed herself and would get quite upset when I wouldn't make her change clothes. Figured that she would come into her own and she did eventually. Now she would be horrified if she dressed like that.

  10. Lol, Deb, I've gone the other way... However, if I did win Lotto, I would buy some nice clothes again... Lucky my Mum is a good sewer, she makes me beautiful clothes for Chrissy and birthday pressies (I think it's so I don't embarrass her...)

  11. Meegz just told me that I traumatised her by making her wear fluorescent colours, they were all the rage and we bought the material and Nana made the girls some really pretty tops and skirts and shorts. Meegz says fluorescent yellows and oranges should never have been put on a red head.
Have to laugh at your description of your daughter, last weekend when we picked miniKK up to take her to the zoo my Mum says to me "try and get her to change her clothes, she looks like she's escaped from the circus". She looked fine to me so we left her like that. The animals didn't seem to mind either.

  12. jcat, I actually love good clothes just don't like wearing them, dresses are nice but on someone else, lol. I have a friend who raids my closet because she loves the dresses and suits that I have, from days when I had to dress like a proper business professional.

MS, good for you, glad that you let her dress the way she wanted. Oh yeah my oldest dressed very different from everyone else when she was growing up, you never knew what she would be wearing when she came out of the bedroom. Now she wears nothing but suits to work (ok maybe not right now being over 9 months pregnanat, lol) and comfy jeans at home.

  13. Deb, there's nothing better than comfy jeans and a T-shirt at home, I agree with you, except when it's too hot for jeans like it was today. I do enjoy dressing up in beautiful clothes for special occasions but I am way too lazy to want to dress like that all the time. No one sees me here anyway, except the cats! Sounds like you have some beautiful clothes tucked away in your wardrobe...

MS, I think MinKK looking like she escaped from the circus would be great! Performance clothes, very boho!

  14. No one sees me either, don't attend functions that require that type of dressing any more. During the summer, its more like T-shirts and shorts for me with the occasional short dress (knee length) if I am staying home.

  15. I've become a t-shirt and long shorts person this year(now that I can buy clothes that fit) but only at home. If I'm going out I put on a blouse and skirt.

  16. I don't wear shorts outside of the house/yard, and this is the first year that I have actually worn sleeveless tops.

  17. Personally, I'm bringing back the 'parachute' pants! (I have a black pair) Laugh if you must, but they're super comfortable and quite styley as far as I'm concerned. I also wear a do-rag or skullcap AND I listen to Depeche Mode, so sue me! * pfffft!! * LOL

Posted 3 years ago by Tigger #

  18. Don't know about the pants but I like Depeche Mode!

Posted 3 years ago by SoxsMom #

  19. Well parachute pants weren't too bad, long bell bottoms were though. I can't even look at my own pictures from then.

Posted 3 years ago by Buttercup #

  20. Oh man, I love Depeche Mode. I've got all their music. Love the hits too:

    People Are People
    Strangelove
    Never Let Me Down Again
    Personal Jesus
    Enjoy the Silence
    Policy of Truth
    World in My Eyes

Wow... (firing up Winamp... cuing up the first tune.... Policy of Truth...)

  21. "...never again is what you swore the time before..."
    * does his '80's dance in parachute pants *

    sPrOiNg! :)

  22. MS, I will not go near fluorescent colors, yes that's ruined, puffy sleeves, paisley and some others. The biggest thing probably is I will never in my life wear bike shorts again.
I specifically remember the bike shorts and more importantly this seriously ugly pair of fluorescent orange pants.
But they all were the style then :) Just hoping that style never repeats

Posted 3 years ago by Airyshone #

  23. lol, the things we do to our children! Never could do the bike shorts thing myself, and only just very recently could I look @ paisley prints again.

  24. I LOVED the 80's...my favorite decade thus far. Of course there was plenty of cheesiness, but every decade has its share of cheese, eh?

Bring on the Cavaricci's, Tigger...and long live Crockett and Tubbs!

  25. I can't and won't look at paisley print. Goes way back to when I was under 8 years old and all my dresses were homemade in paisley print. Mum was a dressmaker.

    Posted 3 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  26. I only look at it now in bed linens, no clothes, nope, no how, nuh huh!

Posted 3 years ago by AZDEBRA 5/27 & crew #

  27. I can't look at it on anything. no way no how. Odd, that's me.

    Posted 3 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  28. Naw, not odd at all.

Posted 3 years ago by AZDEBRA 5/27 & crew #

  29. So I can never wear my ra-ra skirt again? ;o)

Posted 3 years ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  30. Only if it's not paisley MCW.
