Possible INfection? Parasite?

(18 posts)
  1. Hello,
I adopted a kitten for my mother and she loves him (Storm). Only problem is, he came with an issue...severe profuse diarrhea that is so stinky! He was playing around my Snow White and they shared litter box for 2 days while I visit my mom. Now...5 days later, Snow White is passing soft, light colored stinky poop...simiar to what Storm was passing. Now, Snow White is suppose to be spayed tomorrow and I am going to call the office ASAP to cancel the appointment. But what might be causing the soft poop? Is it a good idea to cancel the appointment. I waited 3 weeks for this appointment because she has been going in and out of heat for like a 2 months. This week she is actually calm.

  2. Don't cancel the appointment and let the vet evaluate and treat as needed.

  3. What happened to Storm? Has your mom taken him to the vet? Sounds like Snow White has caught the same thing. You should call your vet and tell them what has happened and see what they think should be done.

  4. Well I am going to ask tomorrow if I do keep the appointment. The rescue agency that I adopted Storm from, gave my mom medication for him. But it is in pill form and he is not taking it. She crushed it with little water and tried to use a syringe to give it, but he threw it up.

  5. It does sound like the cats have shared some sort of germ, virus or parasite. Keep the appointment for Snow White. Also, take the vet a little baggie of her poop, if you can. It's not the most elegant thing to carry around, but it will help him get the right diagnosis.

Maybe whatever he gives Snow White will be in liquid form and you and your mom can trade medicines (just make sure it's the same med and that you get the dosages right). Don't share meds if they aren't the same thing.

  6. You can get a pill shooter, others have found them successful. Or you could use pill pockets, that others find helpful. If you go to your appointment your vet can evaluate you kitten and treat her so that she can regain health. The vet may also be able to demonstrate techniques that you can use to pill your cat. There are a variety of things to do, not giving the medication perscribed will not help the cat to recover from the illness.

  7. it might be Giardia lamblia,it causes profuse diarrhea unless the kitty is given flagyl. Talk to the vet in the morning, don't want either kitty becoming dehydrated.

  8. Thanks everyone. I am going to keep the spaying appointment for tomorrow. Hopefully the vet will give me something for this. It stinks so badly and I live in a little one bedroom apartment, so this stench is horrible! Thanks again

  9. Good luck with Snowy tomorrow, SNN! Welcome to TDK. Is the photo in your avatar Snowy? It is a great picture. Many of us have created webpages for our kits on Catster.com. It is free and easy to do. You can then edit your profile here to link the webpage address to your avatar. Please click on my avatar to see more pictures of my two kits, Digit and Furl. :)

Do let us know what the vet had to say after you take Snowy in tomorrow. We worry about kitties who are having health issues. Bless you for getting her spayed!

  11. So cute, she really enjoyed that Christmas tree, didn't she? What did the vet say?

  12. That video is too cute. I thought that my girls were bad about the Christmas tree, but I believe that Snow White has them beat!

  13. Ok, I just got back from picking Snow up and speaking to the vet. The stool sample was negative. But, he explained that sometimes, stool samples can miss something like a protozoa. She was running a fever and he was concerned about that. So was I and I wanted to know more about this possible infection. He said it is a trial and error thing to know if it is Giardia or Coccy...something. So he gave me Flagyl and another dewormer to catch anything in there. I am watching her fever because she just had surgery. Now I am trying to get her to drink water, but she is not interested. I will be watching her closely for the next couple of hours and will keep you updated.

  14. I wonder if you could give her a little water with an eye dropper? Or maybe she would suck on cloth that is wet.

  15. Was she running a fever before the surgery, or did that develop after the operation?

Posted 3 years ago by Leeny #

  16. Before the surgery, I dont know if there was an increase in her temperature. But I doubt they would do the surgery if she had a fever. Note that, she did the surgery with the county's humane society and i have my personal vet. So I took her to my vet as soon as i got from picking her up. So my vet said he is not sure if they even assess the kittens before surgery since they do like 40 surgeries a day.

  17. So a different doctor did the surgery than the one who treated her for the diarrhea? I didn't think they'd do surgery on a kitty who was running a fever, either.
