  1. Well, still not having a job is getting just plain annoying to me. The worst thing is not having anything to do everyday.
So, I just registered for an intro session on being a volunteer at my local animal shelter. This way I can get my animal fix and use up my excess of spare time :)

Anyone else a volunteer at their local shelter?

  3. Airy, what a great and much needed donation of our time! Animals around the world salute you!

  4. My sister volunteers at the local shelter here in Jersey. That led to a job working at a local animal hospital. I don't have much free time, but I do donate when I can and when I adopted Leela, I doubled the adoption fee.
BTW, she's still fostering little Martin, who is jaundiced and has poo problems. His liver numbers aren't good. They don't know what happened to him; they're leaning toward poisoning of some sort, anything from antifreeze to aspirin. I'll be seeing him in a little while. Next step is an ultrasound, which the shelter approved. Fingers crossed for the little guy.
Good luck to you, AS. I bet you will find volunteering very rewarding.

  5. Airy, I work for a non-profit arts organization. As someone who DEPENDS on volunteers, I applaud your actions and say thank you! Great way to beat boredom, make a difference, meet people and make contacts.

When it comes to looking for work, the latest trend in resumes is to have a paragraph at the top that sums up what you bring to an prospective employer and to include full contact info for at least two references with the resume. If they have to call you to get your references, your resume will most likely not even be considered.

  6. KYK, I wish we had this conversation last week! I just applied for a job. I like the idea of a picture. In my case, I would put a pic of a school bus on it. As far as references, I guess I'm old school, noting on the resume that they are available upon request. I will bring that to the interview. It may not be necessary, since I was contacted and asked to consider applying by someone who knows my work ethic very well. Guess we'll see what happenss.

  7. KYK, I always put my references on my resume, I've also found that hardly any of the jobs I've had in the past actually contacted my referees. But it is always nice to have there.
My trouble with getting a job is they want American employees. I've had some say that's what they're looking for and that they will contact me if they don't find it. It's technically illegal but there's not alot I can do about it. I take the view of, why would I want to work for a company that doesn't give everyone a fair chance anyway :)

  8. I tried to volunteer at the animal shelter, but most of what they needed had to be done on weekdays, while I'm at work.

  9. Just found out I have to pay for the intro session. I can't afford it right now with no income so it will have to wait until I can scrounge up some moolah :(
Hopefully not too long. I'm meant to be getting payed for some work I did for someone recently so that should help.

  11. How much are they wanting you to pay Airy?

  12. They want you to pay to be a free volunteer? Well doesn't that seem strange? I do a lot of volunteer work. I have never had to pay for any training so I don't know about that one. Airy I think they would be lucky to have you!

  13. Well, that's a sneaky way to get some money out of you as well as your time... that sounds bizarre to me. I volunteer at our local SPCA Airy, and love it, but I guess it's all very different in the US...

  14. I volunterr at our local no kill shelter. It would break my heart to work at a kill shelter, plus I would probably come home with all the animals daily!
I've never heard of paying to get intro for volunterring, seems odd to me.
Might you be interested in pet sitting in your area?
