  1. My family is mourning the loss of a really good friend today. We were close enough to him that we called him Uncle Ed. He was godfather to my nephew. Uncle Ed had a massive stroke on Thursday and we were all told he wouldn't recover but that it might be a couple of days till he passed.

My parents visited with him for three hours on Sunday morning and I managed to get to visit him on Sunday afternoon for about 45 minutes. My niece saw him on Sat and then again on Sunday. He had his eyes open on Sat but when I saw him on Sunday, He was paralyzed on his right side and his eyes were closed and his breathing labored. I did see his left eyeball move when someone spoke to him so I believe he heard us when we spoke to him.

He died this morning at 10:30am PST with just the hospital staff with him as it seems his family had stepped out for something.

He was an animal and horse lover, very social person and a gentle giant of a man. He was 87 and it seemed it was his time to go. Please say a small prayer for his passing.

  4. He may have wanted to wait untill his family stepped out. Ihave been a longterm care nurse for 22 yrs and it happens alot. They don't want the family to watch te final breath as some have said they didn't want that to be thier last memeory. A lot of the time even in very close families the nurse is the last person to speak with the pt. You can feel confident that she was a very caring person or she would not be in that type of nursing
I am sorry for your loss

  10. Karin, I have seen this time and again in my hospice years. One final decision that we all have is when we will leave. My guess is that, having said his goodbyes, he did not want the family there at that final moment. Better to remember the happy times.

For Uncle Ed - a final moment of control. For his family - know that this was his choice. May the beautiful memories of Uncle Ed in healthy and happy times be the memories that you carry forward.
