  1. Hey everyone! So a week ago I just adopted a new kitten. She is about 6 months old. She currently has upper respiratory infection and I went to the vets and got her on antibiotics. The shelter told me that may happen. So my question is, at the shelter they have been just feeding her dry food and I want to introduce wet food to her. She pokes at it here and there but is not really taking to it. Can anyone recommend anything that I can do or try to get her eating a more balanced meal. Also is there any specific type that they mostly like better? Thanks all for any help. I just want to help her to trust me. The shelter found her as a stray and I just want her to be happy and healthy!

  2. Congratuations of finding the place where everybody loves kitties.

If your kitten has a URI, she probably can't smell very well. Cats need to smell to be attracted to food. She is probably eating the dry food still because when her tummy says "I'm hungry" she knows the food she has always eaten will take away the hungry feeling. But she probably doesn't recognize the wet food as worth her while.

Wait until her URI is cleared up, then try introducing her to wet food again. Ask your vet which brand of wet food he recommends. Some of the cheaper ones aren't very good.

If she never eats wet food, she can still get all the nutrients she needs from a good quality dry food. Just make sure she always has clean water since she'll not be getting any moisture from the dry kibble.

Whatever you end up feeding her, introduce the new food slowly, and don't take the old food away suddenly. For instance, if you change her kibble mix the old and new together for a while. Changing diet suddenly can lead to all sorts of tummy upsets, most of which you'll end up cleaning up.

  4. One suggestion:
use fishy smelly food (Friskies Sea Captain's Choice, Salmon, Whitefish and Tuna) and put a spoon of it on the same plate beside the dry food she is used to. That way she may give the wet food a try or at least recognize it as food.
