My cats USED to get along

(4 posts)
  1. Hi i'm new to this forum, but I wanted to know if anyone had any incite into something that's become a problem out of no where. I've had two kittens from the same litter for about 3 months now. They've always been best of friends and extremely affectionate. i just had the male neutered two days ago, but ever since i brought him home from his operation, his sister growls and hisses at him like he's a stranger. They were apart for only a few hours, i know she hasn't forgotten him, but i cant imagine why she no longer likes him. I had to move a litter box upstairs because she wont even be on the same floor of the house with him. He on the other hand is not aggressive with her and seems confused by her behavior. What can i do?

  2. This is a very normal reaction. The male smells like the vet's office. You might try taking an article of your clothing that you've warn and rubbing it over both of them. You could also wipe the male down with a bath cloth made for cats (available in pet stores). There is a spray called Feliway that many here swear by for calming cats. Another highly recommended product is "Bach's Remedy" which is put in the water the cat drinks. It has a calming effect.

The female is treating the male like a stranger because he smells like one. When he smells right again, they'll be fine.

Welcome to TDK! Please tell us more about your cats. What are their names? My two kits are Digit and Furl. They are polydactyl (they have extra toes). Please click on my avatar to see photos of them on Catster.com.

Please keep posting to let us know how your kits are getting along and tell us a bit about yourself! :)

  3. KW is right -- the smell of the vet makes him seem 'foreign'. It'll be the 'unpeaceable kingdom' for awhile...just like introducing a new one to the pride, it'll take about 2 week max.

I have three girls myself, Jazzie (the one in my avatar), Myrtle, and Lilly (Madame Isis passed last Nov. at the age of 20 1/2).

  4. We hear so much about cats having good vision that it's hard to realize that they recognize each other--and humans, for that matter--mostly by scent, not by sight. They can see well in low light and can see quick motions well, but their ability to distinguish details isn't all that clear. It's a trade-off in eye function.
