Tigger's blood tests came back

(14 posts)
  1. Update on Tigger, my 20+ boy who has all the symptoms of an over-active thyroid:

The test shows his thyroid is totally normal. However, as his heart is beating with what the vet calls a "galloping heart murmur" his Tiggerness will be starting on a small dose of a heart med and then get rechecked in 2 weeks to see how he is doing. In the meantime, I'm to obtain a poop sample to be checked. His urine already showed some blood and white blood cells from his chronic renal failure but he no longer tolerates any oral antibiotics so for now the low level UTI gets benign neglect rather than treatment. The vet is looking into a new injectable antibiotic that lasts for 2 weeks at a time to see if it is appropriate, does not have side effects Tigger can't tolerate, is available, and is even remotely affordable.

So, the old man gets some heart medicine, gets to keep eating me out of house and home, and a recheck in a couple of weeks.

  2. Marnet...that's great news for the thyroid. I hope his grumpy body can find a way to accept a treatment that going to extend his happy old butt. :)

  4. Marnet, may Tigger be happy in his 'eating you out of house and home' and get older by the day.

  5. Oh, every day I have him is a treasure, a real privilege. He's such an energizer kitty who just keeps going and going. Despite being owned by many cats over the years, this is the first truly geriatric cat I've ever had, so dealing with his evolving special needs is proving a new learning curve. And I hope I get to keep learning for him a very, very long time more. Thanks for the support and encouragement.

  6. This is good news Marnet! Tigger has proven over and over that he's tough old guy! Hope the vet will be able to use the injectable antibiotic for the UTI. Headbonks 'n Purrs! =)

  8. Thanks. Tigger appreciates all the headbonks, purrs, white light, and good wishes, as do I.

The vet and I have an agreement that we aren't going to treat any condition at this point so aggressively that the side effects make Tigger uncomfortable. We will be treating enough to give him continued comfort and high quality of life rather than aggressively to extend life. Of course I want him to live forever and furever. But I won't put him through anything drastic or that makes him miserable at all just to lengthen his stay with me. He's earned his old age and is entitled to spend it in as truly sweet comfort as possible.

I've good hopes for the injectable antibiotic and just hope it isn't so utterly outrageous in cost I can't manage it. But so far I've been able to put aside other things to afford the cats, I'll find some way to do this too.

  9. Marnet, you are definitely doing everything right as evidenced by the fact that Tigger is 20 years old! What a fortunate elderly man Tigger is to have you as his mama!

  10. Thanks, but it has more to do with the good Lord's help and that he created this special Tigger boy to be a very special kitty.

  12. Tigger's doing well at 20! Bones is 1 year his junior, with his own portfolio of health problems. I know what you mean about getting tablets down them; Bones has a daily renal failure tablet which luckily is paletable, because when I've had to get other tablets down his neck, he develops the strength of 10 cats!!

  13. When I was a kid, we didn't know nearly so much about keeping cats healthy and long lived. Several were run over by cars, one died from infection from wounds from fighting other outdoor cats, one was shot by a neighborhood punk. And then I've also had a series of special needs cats that have died young or middle aged from cancer, strange benign tumors that finally caused sudden heart failure, megacolon with diabetes that finally developed along with rapidly failing kidneys, etc. We've had to help several of them go home to whatever eternal care God gives his creatures. It always breaks my heart and then I go right on having more cats and loving each one dearly. I'm not complete without a cat!

  14. Gotta run. I'll keep y'all posted on his progress as he starts getting his heart med on Monday and whether or not we can give him the injectable antibiotic. Thanks for the good wishes. It helps to have this wonderful forum to ask questions and share about my babies. Y'all have been great with feedback about Mandi's IBS and now Tig's old age issues. God bless you all.
