  1. Help! Has anyone encountered this problem???

Tex is having a very hard time. I tried letting the three of them loose in the garage....more room than their carriers, and a big litter box, but still restricted. Tex started attacking his sisters and trying to savagely mount them. The vet warned me they might hiss and spit a little the first night because they would not recognize each other's smell.

But Tex seems to be having serious hormonal surges. He's screaming his head off, caterwauling like crazy. I don't think he's in pain. He responds to me picking him up, cooing to him, petting him, etc. But the second I put him down, he's chasing Mia and Madonna and pinning them down. I finally decided to put him in the largest carrier I have--it's really big, more of a dog kennel, and keep him inside. He's settled down. I feel so sorry for him. I think he's miserable.

What do you guys think? Hormones? Confusion? Separation anxiety? He's never been separated from his mom and sisters before. I can't let him out for three days. He can still get his mom and Maybelline PG. They have appt's next Thur and Fri.

Help! I bought Rescue Remedy, but that stuff is 30 percent alcohol!! I don't want to give it to him. I'm planning to return it. I didn't know it was basically kitty booze!!

  2. Kitty booze isn't such a bad thing - if you were a gentleman cat who'd just had his bits off, you might want to drown your sorrows!!

Sorry Lisa, not a very helpful answer, not had any of experience of this I'm afraid. Hope the rest of TDK comes to the rescue.

  3. Gosh, Lisa - I'm afraid that I don't have a clue. But I was thinking of trying the Rescue Remedy for Windi so I'm very glad that you said that.

Was Tex neutered? Is that where he's been? I just have not heard of that kind of behavior. Usually they are sleepy!

  4. Believe it takes awhile for the males to actually lose all the hormones, thought I had read somewhere it can be up to a few weeks. Try the plug-in Feliway or that type, I found it works better in a room environment.

  5. And maybe put a towel or small blanket over his kennel so that he feels safer in an enclosed environment, just reaching here for some solution.

  6. Can someone tell me what the Feliway plug-in is?

  8. Here's a link you can read about Feliaway

  9. Lisa, Feliway is a pheromone product and is supposed to be soothing to kitties. The plug-in is sort of like an AirWick or Glade plug-in and it lasts about 30 days.

We have used the plug-in to try and calm Windi when something stressful is going on and we do think that it helped. It's sort of expensive but I have found them on Amazon for way less than what Petsmart charges.

  10. Sure sounds like hormonal surges. It won't hurt Tex to be crated for a few days until the worst of it has passed and your other girls are "safe". Ask the vet maybe what they think of his response? I have never had a kitty behave this way either. We used Feliway when we introduced new kitties to our group and it went very smoothly, seemed to really keep everyone calm.

  11. I've tried letting Tex out a few moments--his cries are heartbreaking--but it just can't be done. He attacked Misty, CJ, his sisters, anything female but me. He's okay and quiet the crate. But not out in a room. I'm going to go on the assumption that he will be ok with potty breaks and love breaks. I just don't know what else to do to keep everyone safe, including him.

  12. Oops, almost forgot. Yes, WWM, Tex, Mia and Madonna, my ferals, all got neutered/spayed yesterday. Trixie and Maybelline, the last two ferals, go next week.

  13. Thought I'd let ya'll know Tex has settled down into his new body and gender role as neuter-boy. He and his sisters are all singing in harmony, and doing it very quietly! I think my neighbors have disbanded the kitty-lynch-mob, and we are all safe in our homes and on our patios once again. The last two females will be spayed this Saturday and next Saturday...although I fear Saturday may be too late for Maybelline. I've decided to stay calm about it. If she turns up with a litter, well, I'll just save my pennies and get them fixed, too. Madonna and Mia have recovered great from their spays--a week ago tomorrow. They took it much better than Tex!

  14. So glad Tex "settled down"! Cuddles swears by Feliway difusers, plus the vet has her on anxiety meds.... but her issues are different - she was spayed 13 yrs ago.... she just doesn't like change, or anyone she doesn't know in the house.... or basically any change of any kind, and it seems to be excalating as she gets older.....
anyway, scritches for Tex, and I hope the others get over their surgerys soon!

  15. Great to hear that Tex finally settled down. Lisa, altho you don't agree with the alcohol in the rescue remedy, there is not that much in it & it truly worked well for settling down my kits (& I have numerous different personalities going on here). It didn't hurt any of them to get it. I just put a few drops in their water dish. None were the wiser. And,believe it or not, I used it along with them (I had the version for humans). It was a miracle worker for calming me & the alcohol content did not hurt the kits.
It was much quicker to work than the Feliway diffuser. The diffuser needed alttle time to permeate thru the area to reach all it was intended for.

  20. I'm glad that Tex has settled down.
I bet that is how Chester acts when he has to part with his,he is going to be so upset. Dusty not so much.

  22. Lisa, I just had my 7 month old kitten Ari neutered. We thought it was time b/c he was attacking my older cat viciously and constantly. After the surgery, we didn't really see a difference in that except for it isn't constant anymore. But it is frequent. I am hoping the behavior will continue to decrease but so far it hasn't .. ... Maybe males take longer to adjust after surgery.

  23. Tex is now as docile as a kitten, pardon the pun! He's back to his old self, before the surgery, even before adolescence. Whew! Thanks for your support, guys!! We had a rocky week there. The only kitty who didn't suffer his wrath was Misty. She such a strong-silent-type. When he tried to pin her down, she used her weight to flip him right off! It was pretty funny!

Sadly, neither Trixie not Maybelline could be captured by any method on Saturday, and so neither of them got spayed. I started trying to get one of them Friday night. I tried everything. Even tuna. They would not go into the carrier. Trixie scratched me up pretty badly.

  24. Susie, I just read your post about the Rescue Remedy. I'm going to be open-minded about it.

I originally bought it to give Misty for her stress grooming. I think I should check with the vet before I give it to her. She has her senior baseline bloodwork done this Tuesday. If her liver enzymes are healthy, and the vet thinks it's ok, I may try her on it for a while.

  25. Lisa...If for no other reason, I can guarentee that a few drops under Your tongue, It will most definately help calm your nerves. I was amazed that I felt nothing more physically than a calming affect on me. I just wish I had some last night. I'm going thru the same thing Petpntr was. The last 2 nights. Zero sleep. Massive toothpain. I took a vicodin last night, which I've used for yrs. & had a deadly reaction to it suddenly. About 3 a.m. I found a motrin (600) & took it. It helped w/some of the pain, but,Winnie refused to let me sleep w/her constant getting into things.I will try to catch up on the ZzZz's today.
Good Luck w/Misty & her bloodwork. Hope all is well.

  26. I know all about that "getting into things" thing...you have my sympathy! I sleep in earplugs so I won't know what all CJ's been into until morning. She runs around the apt. clearing countertops and table tops all night. I hope your toothache gets better...pain is awful.
