Oh gosh, I see we have a brand new "help my kitten is sick" thread. What is up with this?????

I don't even look at those threads anymore WWM, sad but true
Hi all!!!

People keep responding to them and I think that it just fuels the fire. I would swear that lots of them are the same person. Maybe I've grown cynical but there are too many similarities to just be a coincidence.

No, Gini - we could tell that one was not a bogus posting. Sometimes the spelling, punctuation and writing style give it away. The T's have been worse lately than since I joined over a year ago. The worst part is that it always ends up causing ruffled fur amongst our members and several people have left because of it. That's what really makes me sad.

It's a tough situation whether to answer or not. On the one hand if it is a t then we are wasting time, energy, and heartfelt emotions on nothing. On the other hand, what if someone really does need help and doesn't get the answers because we are too scared to answer just in case? Know what I mean? It's hard to decide what's right.
-
I agree WWM. That's why I don't even go look at those threads anymore. Besides making me upset that an animal could be sick, I get upset when I see our friends go at each other.

Can I jump into this conversation please? I think I have figured out that the t's have such dramatic problems with their imagined pet that if it were true they absolutely would need to get it to a vet immediately. They need the attention so badly I guess they think the worse the situation is the more attention they will get. I have pretty much made up my mind to ignore those brand new members who have such drama. I can't help them anyway but if I have some doubts I am just going to tell them to go to a vet they need more help then they can get online. I worry as much about the t's as I do the people who may not be the exact definition and maybe even have cats but they hint for money.
-
Exactly so, petpntr. I don't jump in, 1) because I don't have the knowledge for most of the "problems" they are describing and 2) it's better to just ignore it until we can sort of determine if it is a genuine post. Yes, the hints for money are pretty obvious, aren't they? There certainly is a common thread among many of the threads, though.
Last summer we had a new member who I would not call a "troll" but she just broke my heart. She said that she was nine years old and somehow she found us. She didn't post problems about kitties or anything like that. Instead it was so apparent that she needed us to talk to and to interact with her. It broke my heart because I couldn't understand why a little girl would be so alone. But when school started she disappeared.

Can I just re-post here my comment on one of the more recent threads? -
"We have no real way of knowing whether a "cry for help" is genuine or a troll. I for one would far rather reach out and answer any and every such thread - so what if it's a troll? If they are, they'll get bored and not post again. No skin off my nose. In a few days I'll have forgotten them.
I would far rather do this, than wrongly identify someone in genuine need of help. I do feel that we can be too quick to judge on this site, and that may give the impression of some impenetrable "clique" to new posters.
And let's remember that this is an international site, and that most countries are now very cosmopolitan. Bad spelling / incorrect language are not necessarily signs of trollage. English may well not be that person's first language.
Tolerance guys. And keep it fluffy :-)"
Both Tara Rose and AJ are now accepted as genuine, but how nearly were they scared off? Given the choice of finding out I'd fallen for a troll, or feeling like s**t because I'd ignored a genuine cry for help, I know which one I'd choose every time.
The internet is a massive resource. For many people it's become a natural first line of enquiry, especially if the other option is expensive vets bills. In the States alone, you have a population of what, 300,000,000? So statistically I find it pretty surprising we get as few new posters/threads as we do!
As I've just posted on the "Why I Love TDK" thread, this site, this community means so much to me, but I do honestly feel we can come across as more than a bit intimidating to new posters, especially when we judge too harshly and/or quickly.

That's true MCW, bad spelling/language could be a sign of English being a second language. I never have any advise to give anyone if their kitty is sick unless it's go to a vet. I am familiar with some UTI issues but that's about it.

Hey everyone! I had a minute to come back and sit for a minute in the cafe. I have to work late tonight and have been thinking about what I can run out and grab to eat. All that talk of tuna sandwiches! My problem is that nothing really sounds good. I haven't had much of an appetite since the beginning of the year. I don't feel bad otherwise and unfortunately, I don't seem to be losing any weight from it. The tuna sounded tempting, but I hate to go pay for a tuna sandwich when I make them so often at home!
I know I need to eat something. Saturday night I wasn't hungry and still wasn't hungry Sunday morning, then next thing I know I have a total blood sugar crash and came close to going down. Fortunately I was at a friend's house enjoying electricity and heat and she had sweet tea and peanuts handy. I know better than to go that long without eating, but the whole no power storm of the century thing had me discombobulated!
What's everyone else going to have for dinner tonight? Maybe I'll get inspired!

That is true, MCW. I usually take a look at where they are from, if that information is there. A couple of months back we had a definite T who kept opening new accounts. All of a sudden we had five new members from a very small town here in the US and that all wrote exactly in the same style. That's when it really raises the question of whether it is a T. And actually, they were. Or she - it was one person.

We had chicken in a mushroom sauce with rice Kykat. Does that get your taste buds tingling?

KK, you need some comfort food! Mac and cheese? A loaded baked potato? A nice omelet?
I'm making pork chops and am going to make a sauce of sauteed apples with just a bit of rum for flavor, and finish it off with a pat of butter and just a little cream. And I'm only doing that because I have some apples that must be used! With it a baked acorn squash (same reason!), a salad and I'm trying to think of a starch. A little pasta, maybe.

Oh KK, I just popped mine in the oven! Comfort food (daughters' favorite)
It called "the NO-FAIL, CAN'T MESS UP, EVEN SVEN CAN MAKE IT CHICKEN CASSEROLE"
1 pack bone-in ,skin on chicken thighs
1 pack bone-in , skin on drumsticks
(Yes you can use breasts or whatever pieces you like)
2 cups white rice - whatever kind you like
4 1/4 cups chicken stock
1 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
2 large gloves garlic chopped fine
1 medium onion sliced
1 tlb. chopped fresh parsley & thymne
Salt, PepperPreheat oven to 375. On stove top put chicken stock in a pot and bring up to a slow boil. In a skillet, brown chicken pieces in a little olive oil and remove to a plate. Pour out that oil, add a little more and brown onions for 2 mins. add garlic & mushrooms and cook until mushrooms are tender.
Spray a ceramic or pyrex baking dish with Pam. Pour rice in, mushroom/onion mixture and fresh spices. Pour hot chicken stock over that and stir. Add in chicken pieces. Cover tightly with foil. Bake at 375 for 30 min. turn oven doen to 350 and bake for 45 more min.
Comes out perfect everytime!!!

Spaghetti with meat sauce is one of my favorites!!! And I make really good meat sauce. But I can't eat it anymore :-( I had an ulcer a few years ago and ever since then meat sauce and I just don't seem to get along.
Pika, I split the acorn squash, remove the seeds and put it cut side down on a foil lined baking sheet. Bake for about 45 minutes at 350. Sometimes I put butter, cinnamon and allspice on it because acorn squash sort of resembles pumpkin. But tonight I don't want those spices and so I'm going to make a lime, butter and hot red pepper flake sauce to put on it so that it will have a little bit of a kick.
Speaking of that..... I guess that I should go and get started!

Variation:
Stir in a packet of taco or fajita seasons to rice and add 1 can drained black beans., 1/2 cup choped jalapeno peppers... use cilantro instead of parsley ..... gives it a nice mexican flare... to serve put rice on plate, chicken pieces on rice, and sprinkle with cheddar cheese it should melt as it hits the hot chicken... serve with sides of black olives, sour cream and fresh quacamole....

WWM do you do your acorn squash with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon? I do love it that way. CM, Normally I am a spaghetti fiend, but we had a couple of meals of it while the power was out so I will need a break from it for a while. MCW the chicken and Rice sounds pretty good. Slip me some through the wormhole!!! I may have to wander around and see what co-workers are doing for dinner and see if I get inspired.
