This has been the very sad news today from across the Tasman Sea from NZ today. The toll keeps on rising, I thought the original 14 was terrible but this has just become almost too hard to take in.

  2. Saw that the total now is 65 according to the yahoo news....how sad indeed.

They have missed it by a few I see, its got to be hard on everyone (families, community, etc.)

  3. Now the total is 84 Deb, it keeps on relentlessly going up. Over 700 homes destroyed as well as schools and entire towns.

  10. This is so sad. I heard last night about the 14 and they said the number was sure to rise... looks like they were right. I do forget that it is summer down there and therefore the dry season. I will keep everyine there in my thoughts and prayers.

  11. Latest reports put the number of lives lost at 108. They suspect arsonists caused some of the fires.

  12. JessieJ is our Australian TDKer - she posted a while back saying how hard it was with the high temperatures. I hope she's OK - does anyone have an email for her? Ooh (thinking as I type) wonderif there's anything on her website?

    *goes to look*

  13. Hmmm, no email address, but it does say they're in Victoria, Australia, which is NOT good news.

  14. Hoping all is well with JessieJ and we hear from them soon.

  15. I have sent a facebook link to all my facebook friends to ask for donations to the disaster appeal. I'll try to post it here too.

    I hope this works.

  17. I read that this fire was suspected arson in three spots. How can anyone be so sick as to bring about this kind of death and devastation. It's heartbreaking. Loved the story of the hero teen who saved his sister and others. Way to go kid! A true hero!

  18. Thanks PM for posting that link. I agree anything would be a help.

  19. This is awful. Prayers for those afflicted, in the path of the fires, and the firefighters.

  20. PM..I went to the link above but when I tried to click on the Australian Red Cross donation link I couldn't get through. I'll try again later. Also praying for downpours and no wind!

  21. 3 of my relatives are in the NSW fire service. At the moment the wildfires are in Victoria so my relatives are only involved in "normal" bushfires, but if the weather stays so hot and dry the wildfires could move north to NSW as well.

Pray for lots of heavy rain and much less wind. If any of you are facebookers there is a link on my page to support group for those suffering in the fires, and I posted a link above to the Australian Red Cross, they have set up a disaster appeal.

  22. Because the red cross donation site is a secure site it takes a LONG while to load please be patient and/or keep trying. And thank you very much for anything you can give. If you can't afford to give money please give your support by joining the support group. (I'll post the link here in a minute)

I don't know if this will work ....

  24. Please bump this if you see it sinking to the bottom of the page. I'll copy the link to the Red Cross every time we start a new page.

  25. I'm so glad you started this thread, MS, I was planning to start one if no one else had. The stories from Australia are heartbreaking. There are bushfires every year but this is the first year that the toll is being measured in terms of human lives lost and towns razed, rather than hectares of land burnt. My heart goes out to all those suffering in Australia, they are our next-door neighbours, our friends and our relatives and we grieve with them.

  28. Has anyone been able to get an email for JessieJ?? Polly's Mum my daughter was working on and international volunteer project and took this up. She is taking up donations to send to the Red Cross. She has only been on the phone to a few friends but things are spreading. She is doing a fundraiser and it was originally to help her with the cost of her Ambassadorship, but she is putting the money to the Australian Red Cross. She is selling Krispy Kreme Donuts and as of now she has about $50 raised. I will make sure that I send you the total she raises Friday evening. I wish it could be the kind of money that is truly needed but she will do her best.

  29. Sox's Mom, your daughter truly is amazing. Won't she need that money for her ambassadorship? yet she is thinking of others in need! She must have one huge heart!

Posted 1 year ago by jcat #

  30. She knows this is a small findraiser and she will just have to work a little harder on the others. She does community service projects every month. She is part of an Adventure Crew (a mix of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, youth group at church, and National Honor Society. All these groups focus on community service. When she was selected by People to People (she will be the 53rd year since Dwight D. Eisenhower started this project), she started thinking of community beyond her own town. I told her about the thread, her Dad told her about the news stories, and it became a project where she can help her neighbors in another country.
