  1. NZ has offered to send 100 firefighters to assist with this tragedy. We are also entering our own extreme fire season and have had several already with many properties lost but on nowhere the scale of Australia. In my own area we are at extreme fire danger.

  2. Please stay safe, MS. Does your area have an emergency evacuation plan in case that is ever needed?

  3. Bless the NZ firemen as they leave to help with the fires. My prayers are also with those affected. As requested I think this needs to stay near the top.

  4. I donated, just FYI the Australian dollar is about$ 0.6693 again the US dollar. I donated $10 and it amounts to about $6.

  5. I think it might be the other way round, BC (ie an Australian dollar is worth about 66 US cents). I just checked on xe.com (currency converter) and it said $10 US should be just about $15 Aus. The Down Under currencies are not usually as strong as your dollar. So you have given much more than you know!

  6. Jcat,he Australian Red Cross would only let me donate in Australian dollars though,I will probably go back and donate more now that I know the exchange.

  7. How sad. The story about the heatwave and the thread with that poor koala bear had me worried. Then these fires. All of those people and all of the emergency rescue workers are in my prayers. I am also praying for rain and cooler temperatures.

I do hope that no one actually helped set these fires, sigh.

  9. KW, MS's evacuation plan is probably run to the beach or harbor, they're close enough.
Being serious though there is Civil Defence plans in place for everything from tsunami's to fire's to floods. There are regular evacuation points and most likely if there were fires the suggestion probably would be head for the beaches.
My thoughts are with the aussies.

  10. Here's a good explanation about why the Australian bush fires are so destructive. We don't get them like that in NZ as we tend to have more evergreen trees.

Unfortunately Deb some of these fires will almost certainly have been started by arsonists and as the Australian Prime Minister said what else can you call those people but mass murderers. Hopefully they will be brought to justice.

  11. Well, that's good, MS, because I'm over an hour's drive away from the beach so I really don't think running there in the case of a bushfire is a viable option. I could just about manage to run to the local swimming pool, two streets away...

Seeing Kevin Rudd just about break down on the news was sobering. I will never understand anyone who could set a fire in those conditions, knowing people will probably die.

  12. Neither do I Jcat. We are now under a strictly no fires here but we did get a lovely drop of rain tonight.

  20. MS will keep this bumped. Should have a report tomorrow night with a total from her fundraiser.

  21. The death toll is now over 180, whole towns razed to the ground, hospitals running out of morphine for burns victims ......

Here is the link for donations if any of you feel able to help. One Australian dollar is worth a bit more than 50 American cents, so a donation of say $20 Australian will cost you approx $12 or $15 US

  26. i had heard about this a few days ago, and was so horrified myself...it was bad enough when i thought it was a natural disaster, but when i too was reading they suspected it was mainly arsons, i was so angry to think people have the heart to such things. some people are really heartless. and for us, it's echoing in the news....in a suburb of philadelphia called coatesville, there's been a rash of arsons that have been unable to be solved. the death and distruction toll is not nearly as high, but the same thought comes to mind - who could be so heartless as to do such things? even pyromaniacs, it's terrible that it does not bother them in the least...in fact they get thrills, from seeing this kind of thing. i hope to hear of more small miracles that come from all tragedies!

  27. The weather today is much cooler which greatly assists the fire fighting, hoping they get more of the fires under control as the forecast for early next week is high temperatures and winds again with possible lightning. The stories coming out of this tragedy are heart breaking and heart warming all at the same time. I have heard there has been enough clothing donated but now they require suits and good dresses etc so the people who have lost everything can attend the funerals of their family, friends and neighbours looking respectful.
