  1. Paradox:
Oh, you are fine to go several days before getting to the vet. Just do it within about a week at the most is best.

As to essentials, don't forget to add litter for the litter box to your list!

And, personally, I'd suggest getting 4 bowls so that you have a clean pair to put down when you pick up the dirty ones to wash. If your budget won't stretch to 4 bowls to start, then 2 will do but remember to wash them often so kitty is drinking and eating from clean bowls. Again, you likely can find glass or metal bowls at a lower cost somewhere other than the pet supply store, depending on what shops you have nearby. Oh yes, and don't get big dog sized bowls as a little kitten will have trouble getting to the food and water in a big bowl. In a pinch, you can feed canned food in a saucer from regular dishes (with your mom's permission first!) and put water in a cereal bowl. In fact, I use small fruit dishes for feeding and cereal bowls and big ash trays for water. Just don't use plastic.

Be sure to buy enough food not to run out before you can go to the store for more. You don't want your kitten going hungry. At the same time, don't buy a huge amount to start because you are going to want to find out what food the kitten is used to eating and gradually change from that, if you do change, to whatever you chose to feed.

Don't be surprised or upset if your kitten gets loose stools from the stress of moving from the shelter to your home and from any change in diet. Slight looseness in the stool is okay but if the kitten has true diarrhea, that is serious as it can become dangerously dehydrated rather easily. But if you can keep the same diet to start and not let kitty overeat and gorge (as kittens are apt to do given a chance) you aren't likely to run into any problems.

The laser pointer makes an excellent toy. All four of my cats love to chase the light spot. One important safety note: you must NEVER point the laser light into the cat's or any person's eye!!! You can severely damage the retina of the eye, causing vision loss, including blindness, with even brief contact between the laser light and the eye. Be careful about how the laser will bounce off mirrors and still do the same damage from the reflected beam. But with just that bit of caution and care, you can provide your cat with hours of good fun. My cats like even more to chase a light spot made from sunlight reflecting off my watch crystal when the angle of the sunlight coming through a window allows.

Sounds like you are ready to get a kitty! Good luck.

food, bowls, scratching post, litter box, LITTER, laser pointer, perhaps a feather on a wand toy

    Go for it! Happy shopping.

  2. bump for Northern Hemisphere day shift

Let's make sure Paradox is all set to go get that new kitten he's wanting!

  3. Wow just getting all caught up...(thanks for the bump Marnet) I'll definatly be checking in Monday morning hoping to here about Paradox's new family member!! a Lynx Ragdoll...Wow...no way not to fall in love!!

  4. Well, all that I can say is that your kitten is going to be very lucky to have been adopted by someone like you, Paradox! You have asked such great questions, and have gotten tons of information. Now, you just need a kitten to love and snuggle!

I can't wait to see who comes home with you!

Posted 9 months ago by WillowandWindismom #

  5. Aw shucks, thanks for the compliments :D
Marnet, your much like a guardian angel to me, your information and willingness is too much to say thank you to! :)

As you said, no question are embarrassing, but I think this one is... what 'litter' goes into the litterbox? Sand? Also, as you guys stated before, what is "bed mice" ? Sorry for the lame questions...hehe.

    So, here are my notes:

    - Kitten Food (Primary food must include a variety of meats)
    - 2 GLASS OR METAL Bowls (Small sized, not dog sized)
    - Scratching post
    - Litter Box (Must include 'litter')
    - Laser Pointer

What should I look for when purchasing a Scratching post?
Seems like, I'll be buying the food from Coles or such, the Scratching post, Glass/Metal bowls and the Litter Box from the Pet store and the Laser pointer from some convenience store.

PS: Do I need to purchase a litter shovel/spade?

PSS: Roughly how large are 10 week old ragdolls? They seem to grow to a large size in a few weeks!

PSSS: Do I also need to purchase a specific comb for the kitten? Although I read that ragdolls barely shed and minimal grooming is needed.

Posted 9 months ago by Paradox #

  6. "Bed mice" are your feet under the covers. When the kitty sees them move, they will often 'attack.'

I'm not a good one for advice on the litter though. Mine use a clumping litter, but they are 2 and 6 years old.

I've read that a taller scratching post is better - allows the cat to stretch. However, some prefer the horizontal type.

Posted 9 months ago by 2 Popoki #

  7. I can't speak to the size of Ragdolls as I've never had one. But you should be able to look that info up on the internet.

"Bed mice" or "bed monsters" are toes and hands under the bed covers, move them and they get "attacked" and played with. Good fun for both cat and person.

    Primary Notes:

Kitten food - you're correct about more meat, less grain

4 small to medium sized glass or metal bowls - buy wherever is least $$

Scratching post -- whatever seems good and affordable

    Litter pan

Litter - do NOT get clumping litter for a kitten! Just buy the regular clay based litter -- avoid scented litter -- look for one with charcoal in it as that will cut down on odor but okay to get plain clay litter

    Laser Pointer

You should be good to go! Now just bring that darling kitten home!

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  8. Paradox I would suggest that you not get regular size bowls just yet. A 10 week old kitten is very small and a small dish is best something like a saucer. The bowl for water should not be big. Kittens don't know what water is and they can't see it. I have even heard of people putting food coloring in it so they can see something is in the dish. If they have a big bowl they can fall into it or in the least upset it and make a mess. Have something shallow. I still use small fruit dishes for mine. You can get them second hand at places like Goodwill (not sure if you have that in Australia) but they don't need to be expensive. Just make sure you don't get plastic ones. Plastic can cause chin infections.

Things like a litter pan should be small enough so that it can hop in and out easily. If you get a large litterpan it will be difficult for it so you may want to get a small one to start with.

The most important advice here is that you not use clumping litter. Clumping litter turns into something like cement when it is wet. Kittens eat litter sometimes and they also injest it when they clean themselves. If a kitten injest clumping litter it can be fatal or require expensive surgery. Kittens should not use clumping litter until they are 3 or 4 months old at least. Litter comes in bags or plastic containers and you just pour it into the litter box. For a kitten I would pour enough to have about 2 inches deep.

For the scratcher, again you don't need to get a big one. It should be long enough so the kitten can stretch out to its full size twice. In other words twice as long as the kitten is. When it gets bigger you can get a larger one or a cat tree. They have some scratchers that hang on the wall, some made with cardboard that cats love. I have something called a turbo scratcher which is a round plastic toy with a ball that goes around and cardboard in the centre. You can replace the cardboard as required. All these things will be available at a pet store.

You need to get the same food the shelter is feeding it for now and slowly introduce new food to it by combining a little new with the old and increase the quantity of new food. If you start it off with new food, it will cause diarrhea and stomach problems so go slow.

Also never, never give the kitten milk. Most cats are allergic and cows milk will cause diarrhea and they can become dehydrated from diarrhea. That can be very dangerous for a kitten because if they become dehydrated they will go downhill very quickly (within hours).

I sure hope you get your little kitten this weekend. We are all going to be waiting to hear about it and see pictures.

Posted 9 months ago by petpntr #

  9. Paradox, everything Petpntr is absolutely the advice to follow! Small shallow bowls to start, smallish litter pan to start, even smallish scratching post/pad to start. The turbo toy she mentions with the round cardboard replaceable scratching pad in the middle is excellent! Both toy and scratcher all in one for the price or less than just a scratcher!!!

She's right about not giving milk as that will make kitty sick. And get the same food the shelter is feeding. If you don't know, then maybe you can wait to buy food until you get kitty and find out what food, then buy some food on the way home or even get a few day's supply to start from the shelter to bring home with kitty.

I'm getting so excited for you and dearly hope you get the kitty you want this weekend. Good luck!

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  10. Hehe thanks again. A couple more questions:

Do I need to purchase a litter shovel/spade?

Do I also need to purchase a specific comb for the kitten? Although I read that ragdolls barely shed and minimal grooming is needed.

How long will a packet of litter roughly last me?

Could I use air filters for the litter? It states that it could filter the odors from the litter for up to 6 months?

I was researching litterbox's and such, and found out that you could train your kitten/cat to actually use a human toliet. I remember the women at the shelter telling me that the Ragdolls are toliet trained... Does that mean it understands how to use the litterbox, or knows how to use a human toliet?
I should probably ask them tonight, they told me to ring in the night before Sunday anyway.

Posted 9 months ago by Paradox #

  11. Toilet trained = litter box trained

It is possible to teach cats to use a bathroom toilet but I wouldn't try it with a kitten. Too easy to fall in and drown!!! Literally. That's not a joke. If you want to train him/her to use your bathroom toilet, research how and do so once your kitty is bigger.

How long a bag of litter lasts? -- Depends on how big a bag you buy, how large the litter pan is, and how often you change the litter. I'd recommend not only daily scoopings morning and evening of any droppings but completely change the litter once a week. Be sure to scrub out the pan with hot water and soap when you empty it, dry it well and then put fresh litter in. Don't use any strong cleaning chemicals or any soap with a strong perfume smell, Kitties don't like that.

Yes, you need a scoop or big slotted spoon to scoop droppings. Those are available at the pet store along with the litter pan and litter.

You can try the filters but I've never noticed they do much good. You are better off keeping the droppings removed and the litter changed frequently. The air filters rarely work enough to justify the cost. For that matter, you can open a box of baking soda near by somewhere it doesn't get tipped over and that will absorb much of the odor in the air.

Getting a flea comb and a small brush to help keep kitty groomed is very wise. The litter rubber brushes work well and better than regular bristled brushes.

Okay, so I'm thinking your initial shopping list should be:

1 litter pan -- small size to start
    1 bag of NON-clumping litter
1 slotted scoop/spoon for sifting droppings out of litter
4 small glass or metal saucers/bowls for food and water
1 "turbo toy with scratching pad in middle" or a small scratching post or pad
Supply of same kitten food the shelter has been feeding the kitten
    Laser toy if you want

Also make sure you have a towel or small blanket you can fold up as bedding to put in a box turned on its side or a small laundry basket or such.

Any of you other TDKers have additional items Paradox needs for his starter items for getting his first kitten???

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  12. Paradox, I think that the list of essentials that you have compiled with the help of the others here is spot-on. While it is not essential, I would also get a small stuffed animal or soft ball or some other soft toy that is small enough to be carried around by the kitty. That will give kitty something to play with and "take care of" (many cats just like to wash things the way their mommies washed them). But most important, it is something other than food that you can use to interact with your little beastie at near quarters -- you can't play tug of war, for example, with a laser pointer.

Posted 9 months ago by Ivory Bill #

  13. I just thought of something else. You may be tempted to get it a bed from the pet shop. Hold off on that. It isn't the same for all cats but I have never yet owned one cat in over 20 years that would sleep in a cat bed. They find their own place they want to sleep and at night they sleep with me. What you should probably get is a small box, for a 10 week old kitten you probably don't need one much larger than a shoe box. Bigger is not better. If it fits them it is more comforting and feels more secure for them than having wide open space to sleep in. Put a little blanket or towel or a piece of your clothing in it to make up a bed. When you first bring it home keep it in one room to start off with. Again, bigger is not better and a huge home with lots of rooms to run around in will probably scare it. Keep it in your bedroom with the door closed until it is used to you and knows your voice. Then maybe after 4 or 5 days you can leave the door open and it come out on its own when it feels safe. It will also know that room is its "safe" room.

  14. Thank you all for answering my questions once again, GREAT idea Petpntr, as I have many shoe boxes lying around. That is if it doesn't enjoy sleeping on an over sized pillow.

I'm off to the 'mall' to buy all my items I have on the list.
    Wish me luck!

Posted 9 months ago by Paradox #

  15. My (additional) two cents on your shopping list: from what I've seen at the shelters, a good sized litter box for a kitten is something approximately the size of a casserole or lasagna dish. For the soft toy, make sure you don't get anything that can be chewed off and swallowed by the kitten -- so avoid googly eyes, buttons and manes made out of string. I'd also suggest buying an odor/stain remover for any accidents that might happen. Good luck with your kitten!

  16. Boy... Was that shopping session hard. It was literally like a male shopping for make up!

A few problems here and there...

Cat litter. I could not find clay litter anywhere, and ended up getting "Breeders Choice, Cat litter" made from recycled paper. That ISN'T clumped litter... is it?!
    Picture: http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/2909/image264wv4.jpg

I could not find any "Cat bowls" ... instead, Dog bowls, they are also made out of stainless steel with rubber soles... I hope this isn't bad towards the kitten?
    Picture: http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/7194/image266to3.jpg

I could not find any 'fancy' cat litter tray, I hope this one is okay? I also placed in a 'concealed' place.
    Picture: http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/4593/image278by7.jpg

The food was also hard to pick out, as most ingredients were very similar if not the same. I ended up gettting Friskies for kittens and 2 packets of Whiskas, beef and chicken. Is this okay?
    Picture: http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/3977/image263mx5.jpg

I also bought a double sided comb and litter deodorizer, which you sprinkle on the bottom, then layer on top with litter. It is fragranced... Is it okay for the Kitten, although you guys did tell me cats do not like fragranced things.

I missed two items. First, the laser pointer, not much of a biggie, I searched many convenience stores, target, Kmart and such (Should have checked Toy'R'Us or something like that)... two convenience stores stated that they were NOT allowed to sell them? ...Did I miss something? Are they banned in Australia now?

Second item, more importantly, the scratching post. Woolies and coles did not stock them, pets paradise had all their stock sold out.

Last of all, which will bed type will the kitten find appealing?
    Shoe box: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/9312/image274kw8.jpg
    Pillow: http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/1750/image276pv8.jpg

    Thanks for the feedback!

  17. Paradox:

Outstanding, sir. "Ya done good kid."

Wow, you make it easy for folks by giving us pics to see what you have. Nice!

The cat litter you choose is excellent. It will do very well. In fact, that is likely a better choice than clay litter. You will find that the pellets break down into a crumbled texture when they get wet. It's possible that clay litter isn't available/allowed/popular in Australia. I'd say the paper litter is a very excellent choice.

Those bowls will be fine. They may be too big for a small kitten though, so be prepared to borrow a saucer for food and a smaller/lower bowl for water from your mom to begin with. When your kitten grows, the bigger bowls will do quite well I think. What's nice is that those won't tip over and with the rubber base won't easily be dragged across the floor.

The litter tray is perfect. You don't need fancy. The one you have is exactly what most people get for their cats.

The "concealed place" for the litter tray is fine. Your kitten may or may not like having it there but give the kitty time to acclimate. Some cats prefer privacy, some prefer a clear view in all directions.

I think the food will be fine. Again, once you know what the shelter has been feeding, it is best to start out feeding that same food and slowly transition to your food of choice so as not to upset kitty's tummy.

Sorry you couldn't find the laser toy. I've no clue if those are restricted in Australia. I do know there have been several incidents here in the U.S. of idiots pointing them up at flying aircraft, which is illegal, creating a true safety hazard. You might look for one online and see if you can buy one that way.

Don't worry about the scratching post. You'll find one another day. If you don't have one at first it isn't the end of the world.

Love the stuffed tiger! Awwwww. Kitty will probably make good snuggle friends with it when you are not home.

The shoebox is ideal for a small kitten. Great thinking, sir. The pillow looks appealing too. Let kitty choose and keep in mind that kitty may prefer the shoebox at first and grow into preferring the bed when grown bigger and bolder.

I must say, you have gone about all this in such a responsible manner. Good for you. And it will be good for the kitty to come to a home with such loving care provided from the first.

Now we are all hoping for you that you get that wonderful kitten you obviously so want. "hugs*

P.S. Love your sense of humor -- "like a male shopping for make up." LOL

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  18. Oh, did you remember something to scoop droppings out of the litter with??? If not, you'll need it!

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  19. Hi, Paradox. You did a fine job with your shopping. I love the little stuffed tiger!

The litter looks fine. The package would say if it was the clumping type. Clumping litter sticks together when it gets wet which makes it easier to scoop out of the litter box. It can be deadly for kittens though because they might ingest it and then have it block up their digestive system. Find out what the shelter uses for litter, just in case your kitten doesn't like what you bought.

The bowls also look fine as long as the kitten is able to get its chin over the edge to drink or eat out of them.

I strongly recommend feeding your kitten exactly what the shelter has been feeding him/her to begin. The transition from a shelter to your home will be enough of a challenge for your kitten without switching food on him/her. The shelter may send a little bag of food home with you.

The litter box looks perfect and you've found a nice place to conceal it. I would not bother with a deodorizer for the litter box, especially if it is scented. Just scoop it out regularly.

You still need the scratching post so keep looking for that.

As for the bed, your kitten will let you know which one, if either, is appealing. :)

You will have so much fun when your kitten comes home with you. Enjoy!!

  20. I'll check back here in a little bit. I need to go try again to get my diabetic cat to eat enough so I can give her insulin shot.

  21. Your heart warming, Marnet :)
I hope your cats are okay.

Thanks for reassuring me with the things I've bought, and yeah, I did buy a scooping thingo, Thanks for pointing it out tho!
I hope the ragdolls are not all taken and they DO become attached to me! ... Hope everything goes well tomorrow night, can't wait!

    PS: Happy Valentines everyone!

  22. Thank you Paradox. Kitties are fine. Alice is just not pleased with accomodating to getting shots twice a day, bless her heart. She is an impish firebrand so it's no wonder she doesn't like being regulated and stuck!

I do so hope for you that the ragdolls are left and choose you! Most of us cat lovers rather believe that we usually end up with the cats we are meant to have. And hopefully, in your case, it will be one of the ragdolls.

Happy Valentines Day to you too.

    Is it your birthday yet?

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  23. Gotta go. It's the middle of the night here. I'll check back over the weekend to see who you bring home! Good luck Paradox.

Posted 9 months ago by Marnet #

  24. It looks like you're doing great Paradox! I only wish all new pet owners were as responsible as you. I hope you get your ragdoll kitten, and if not, well no worries. I'm sure you'll find a kitten who will love you and who you will love. Getting a cat's love is probably one of the most rewarding feelings ever. Right now I'm being loved on by both my boys and I love it (even though Kain is biting me -- it's how he shows love). Also, don't be surprised if you end up with someone who's completely different from what you thought you wanted. When I got Kain, I went into the Humane Society looking for a sweet, cuddly lap cat. Kain is quite possibly the exact opposite of what I wanted -- he hates being picked up, cuddled, held, or stroked unless it's on his terms. He almost never purrs for me, so those rare occasions where he comes up to me begging for some loving, purring and making biscuits (aka kneading) are all the more special to me and I couldn't imagine it any other way. I'm sure you're going to be a great cat owner. I can't wait to hear about your new baby!

PS: I found this site really helpful when choosing/getting ready for my boys.

  25. Paradox I am wondering if you got all your shopping done and if you managed to get everything you wanted?

Posted 9 months ago by petpntr #

  26. Paradox, your kitten is already spoiled and you don't even have it yet!! :-) You have got to be the most responsible first time kitty owner that I have ever met! I'm embarrassed to say that my girls just eat out of bowls that I got them because I thought that the bowls were cute!

You know, you can make a scratching post if you can't find one. We have done that many times. You just need a carpet remnant and you can use a piece of 4"x4" wood cut to an appropriate height and just staple the carpet on the wood until you have completely covered it. Just in case you can't find one!

Posted 9 months ago by WillowandWindismom #

  27. @ Petpntr, I posted pictures above, I'm still missing a few things tho :(

@WillowAndWindismom ...Awwww thanks :) Thanks for the DIY tip.

In my room, one side of the wall is practically a mirror, I've seen videos where the kitten/cat goes crazy whilst seeing their reelection... I don't want that to happen when I'm at school?!

Secondly, once I'm at the shelter tonight, the only questions in my mind are - What did the kitten eat previously and Which vaccinations has it had.
Anything else I should ask? Can't wait 'till tonight!

Posted 9 months ago by Paradox #

  28. Just tell them you're a 1st time kitten/cat owner and they should offer suggestions for things you might not think of. And remember, if you don't get chosen today, or your choice is gone, there are PLENTY of kittens needing homes. You'll find one...best of luck!

Posted 9 months ago by linda #

  29. Boy I'm getting excited with you. I think what you have done so far is awesome. You are going to be a wonderful kitty mommy.

The only things I would mention is that the bowls are too big for a kitten. Put them away for now and use a saucer until the kitten gets big enough to use the others.

The shoe box is perfect. Kittens usually like to go "into" something like a box instead of being on top but you can always leave the pillow out and see if it decides on that instead of the box.

The Friskies is good. That's what I feed mine most of the time but I buy canned Friskies with gravy. That way I know they are getting moisture in their diet and it is less expensive than buying the little bags.

You should ask the shelter how often you need to feed the kitten and how much at each feeding. I like Lindas suggestion that you tell them you are a first time owner. They may have some brochures or pamphlets to give you to help you out.

I think you are all set and will be waiting to hear how things go. Remember Paradox, if the kittens aren't there that you wanted then it wasn't meant to be. It just means there is another kitten out there someplace waiting for you to find it. Good luck.
