Everyone probably has a favorite book selection but since ILMC came up with this idea I vote she choose the launch book. Then like the suggestions listed above she can figure out how she wants to proceed after that, whether it is alphabetical, by birthdays, etc. Go ILMC this is a wonderful idea.

Hi! Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day! Hubby and I went to the
"big city" yesterday!! Can't you tell I'm a country girl...lol! It was a wonderful day!
How would everyone feel about choosing a book this way?
Anyone who would like to submit a book send it to my email address.
I will compile a list and put it on a thread and then we could vote.
Just email your vote with the title of the book in the subject line of the email. I will then total up the votes and post the winning book. That way we can all take part in choosing. If you like we could keep our list....add to it and then choose others this way or we could let each member choose.
I just think the first one should be a group effort to have every member involved that would like to take part. Even if you don't think you will be able to participate in the discussion and want to suggest a book ....feel free to do so. Let me know what you think!Posted 2 years ago by ILoveMyCats #

CW...I hope it works! I think it would be fun and it might help me to be more motivated to take the time to read. I know the members will vary from book to book but right now it looks like at least 20 people are interested.
What the heck! If Oprah can do it....why can't we...lol?Posted 2 years ago by ILoveMyCats #

ILMC, I think that the reason we failed the first time is that no one ever actually selected a book. We threw some titles around but that was the extent of it.
I would suggest that you choose a book, and then perhaps each month someone else can be responsible for choosing a book. In my book group here, the person who chooses the book becomes the moderator for that discussion. They are also responsible for doing a bit of research on the author to share with the group.
I'm in!

Yes..I think that would be great. I was going to include that in the list...author...genre...a small summary. If we go that way in choosing.
I don't mind choosing but I want to be fair to everyone else who is going to be involved. So all suggestions and help are welcomed!! Once we get the first book chosen and off and reading..lol...and decide on our process of selecting books the rest will be easy. Also, I think maybe on time frame...if we try to have our book chosen and ready to start reading by March 1...allow 3 weeks for reading...start our discussion thread on March 23....choose our new book and start reading it on April 1. That will also give everyone at least a week to get their new book and not be rushed. At the beginning of each month a new book! What do you think?Posted 2 years ago by ILoveMyCats #

I agree with WWM and CW. I think the reason it didn't work was because no one chose a book. Petpntr made a point that you came up with this selection and should chose. With as many different tastes in genre it could take a month to chose a title. With back and forth voting.

Oh! I agree the person's book who is choosen should be the moderator for the discussion on the thread...ask questions...what people thought. Even if we vote the person who submitted the title could be the moderator. Ok...let me know what ya'll would like to do in choosing a book!!!!

Any suggestions on the other books...how to choose them!

Here's what we have discovered in my book group - you will never please everyone! So sometimes a book will be chosen that some people just won't like and that actually makes the discussion even better.
If it's any help, we have a few loose rules in my book group here. We try our best to stick to paperbacks because hard backs have gotten to be so terribly expensive. And we usually choose several months worth of books at one time. That way, if you are ordering from someone like Amazon, you can order them all and combine the postage.

ILMC in your post with an outline suggestions is says:
Simply take turns. Go alphabetically, by birthdays, or by whatever you decide. Whoever's turn it is selects the next book to be read.
Maybe alphabetically, according to last name, would be easiest to figure out.
March 1 is perfect as far as I am concerned. Thanks for doing this ILMC.

Couldn't stay away! How bout this? I pick the first one and then everyone submit a book they would like to read and email it to me. The order that I recieve the email is the order the books are put on the list. We will publish the list on the March 1 and then we will have several months planned in advance! I promise I will be honest and compile the list as the submissions come in. As books are submitted we just add to the list!

We could then start our discussion of the old book on the 1st of each month keep the thread going as long as we want and start reading our new book on the 1st also. Does that make sense?

Petpntr we email the book title that we would like to be on the list. As ILMC receives the titles she will compile a list of the books. That way if you are purchasing the books you can get them several at a time saving greatly on shipping charges and ensuring people have the book in time to read. She said we would then just go straight down the list of books. No need to vote as each person would email ILMC their book and it will go on the list.

Being I have never done this kind of thing before do we stick with fiction or non-fiction or does it matter. Can it be old books or should it be new books? Do we try and steer away from controversial books or do we hope everyone can handle themselves so we don't cause fights? Just wanting to be sure I submit the right kinds of books...

In my book group here we read all genre's - fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, biographies - you name it! Unlike here in the chat topics on TDK, a bit of controversy is good for a book group. One thing that we do try to avoid in my group is "mindless fluff" because truthfully, there's nothing to discuss when that's the type of book. We have had some great discussions in my group and very rarely do we all agree if we liked the book. I've belonged to this group for over six years now and we have yet to murder a member for disagreeing with us!
We read new books, classics, out of print (which you can almost always find on the secondary Amazon market) and each summer we read a long book because we take two months off from meeting. We do try to avoid an Oprah choice unless it's just something that we are dying to read. I have found her picks to be real downers.
What we do is meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month and we discuss the book that we have read the previous month, since the last meeting. (does that make any sense at all?) And then we start reading the next book. So it usually gives us a month, or at least three weeks to read the book.
ILMC, what's your email address?
