  1. Also, if there is a book on the "block" for that month that you just don't have any interest in or don't have time for finish is it okay to just not participate?

  2. Submit one book to ILMC and she will put it on the list.

As others have said there are times that there just isn't enough time to get everything done so you can sit out. One of the things that WWM and I have both experienced is that not everyone may like the selection but it is interesting to read something that you wouldn't other wise choose.

  3. I think right now submit one book so it will give each person a chance for the book they submitted to get read. Then as we find books we would like to read..submit them and we could add to the list. Does that sound ok?
I think we will all understand if someone can not particpate in the discussion or the reading of the book. I personally would like to try and read all the books for the simple fact that it will help me in being more open minded and reading something that I normally might not. Of course that would be each one's own personal choice. I agree with not doing Oprah book club books. Also we might want to consider when submitting if the book would be very controversial about religion or politics but that is just my thoughts on that.

  4. If this sounds like a dumb question then I apologize in advance but what is it we discuss about a book other than whether we like it or not?

Do we discuss the technical way it has been written, the plot, the characters?

  5. Lol..SM..we are thinking alike!

  6. About the controversy part, I can only say that a few years back my group read The Da Vinci Code, which some churches consider to be controversial and it was the best discussion that we ever had!

One thing that we do in our group here is keep a list of books that have been suggested but that we might not have selected for that year. Then the next year, we already have a start on our list.

And not everyone in my group reads the book each month. Sometimes they still come to the meeting but I think it's for the food :-) There will be months when some of us might not have the time to read the book, or will be gone, etc.

  7. Petpntr, (I hate to keep saying what we do in my group, but it's the only experience that I have) when we get together, we first go around the room and everyone gives a thumbs up, down or neutral about whether they liked the book. But we don't say why. Then we start again and everyone gets to say why they liked or did not like the book and we just listen. Then, we open it up for discussion. That's when you want to make sure that you have read a book that generates discussion.

We read one this last month that we did both of those things, there was absolutely nothing to discuss because it was "fluff" so we moved on to discussing Octomom!

  8. WWM..I am open to any type of book! I don't have a problem with that. You know how things can get sorta heated on certain subjects. I just don't want a discussion to end up being a diaster and someone getting their feeling hurt. Know what I mean?

  9. I am just thirilled ILMC that you are getting this going! I do reading groups in my class--I love them, but I would like to read something for someone older than 12-14 years old!

  10. And BTW...I bought the DaVinci Code and never read it!!!!! It is still in the closet!!!! See...I think a book club would be good for me!!!!

  11. ILMC, that honestly is such a good book. You just can't put it down. But, my opinion is really that Angels and Demons was better.

I am hoping that since it is a book club, and discussion will be about the book, that there won't be any "blow ups" with people getting hurt. That's never happened in my group here but we don't attack each other. We might attack the book, though!

  12. Read it ILMC it is a good story.

  13. SM...I can't hardly wait!!!! This will give me a good excuse to turn the television off!!!!

  14. Our disadvantage will be that we aren't talking to each other face-to-face and so (as we have seen here before) non-verbal gestures and voice inflection is left out, which can change the way that people perceive what we are saying. I've never belonged to an on-line book group so it should be interesting!

  15. I think we all might want to take that into account. Before getting upset ask for clarification--make an effort to understand what is being said.

  16. Count me in, too! I've gotten out of the habit of reading as often as I used to. My only problem is that I can't start a book if it's a school night---I will stay up all night and read it if it's good. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever stopped and then gone back to finish a good book before.

  17. Absolutely.

  18. I think it will be very interesting!! Barnes and Nobles website have online book clubs but I have not really researched them. I just thought it would be nice to have a club that we knew each other even if we had never all met. Another way for us to share a common bond...like kitties and reading!!

  19. Will we be picking a book soon or waiting until the 1st...? I know I would need a little head start if I'm going to order from Amazon...LOL

Posted 2 years ago by Alicia #

  20. ILMC, both B&N and Amazon have book group sites and you can find great discussion questions for book groups there. Why reinvent the wheel, I say?

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  21. I guess if the discussion seems like it is getting out of hand the moderator can step in and just ask to direct the conversation elsewhere.
I didn't even think to ask but I guess Kittenmaster won't mind us doing this?

  22. I am starting to see how this works. I bought the DaVinci Code too. I was really looking forward to it but I'll be darned if I could get into it. I found it dragged and I finally got fedup and watched the movie instead. For me it was a letdown but I can see why WWM says that to have varying opinions is what makes for good discussion.

  23. Alicia...go ahead and submit your book. We will start our new book on March 1 if everyone that wants to participate has gotten it.

Posted 2 years ago by ILoveMyCats #

  24. ILMC I sent you an email yesterday to the email address on the Christmas list. Did you receive it?

Posted 2 years ago by petpntr #

  25. Oh, the movie wasn't as good as the book by a long shot!

I can't imagine that KM would object. We do recipes and all. Let's ask KW - she will know! *runs over to the cafe*

  26. Petpntr...I haven't checked my email since yesterday morning...but I will look.

  30. My S-in-L who also belongs to a book group, just read this book and loved it.

DEWEY, The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron

It has been on the best seller list for quite a while.
