Hello, I'm new to TDK

Hi Lymiecat, welcome to TDK chat and well done on getting brave. :-)
I can't offer you any advice on your problem but there are plenty of people here who can and will do when they see your post. I seem to remember someone having this exact problem with their cat sometime this week so you came to the right place. I have a tortie also, that's Moonshadow(Shadz) in my avatar.Posted 2 years ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

Hi, Lymiecat. Welcome to TDK! I don't have any experience with impacted kitty anal glands. I will try to find the threads that discussed this issue recently. Weekends here are not as active, so please check back regularly to see what new ideas are offered. Tell us more about your tortie. What is here name? How old is she? Do you have a photo of her you could use as your avatar here? Please click on my avatar to see more photos of my two kits, Digit and Furl. :)

Hello Lymiecat and welcome to TDK. I'm glad you got up enough nerve to post. We are quite harmless here and supportive so don't worry about getting acquainted.
If you have had your cat treated for impacted anal glands then you already have an idea of what it is. There really is not much you can do to prevent it. Some cats are just built that way. Cats that have suffered from anal sac impaction may benefit if fed a diet high in fiber. The stools produced by this kind of diet tend to be bulky and, theoretically, place more pressure on the anal sacs during defecation to aid complete emptying.
You can also ask your vet to show you how to express the glands yourself. It is a very simple procedure but really disgusting so you have to decide if you can stand to do it.
I am sorry I can't be more help that this. Most cats who have suffered from it once are likely to go through it again so it is important that you keep an eye on your cat to catch it as quickly as possible if it does happen again. It will start "scooting" along the floor to try and rid the discomfort and that is usually the first sign.
Good luck.

Hello Lymiecat - I haven't faced that problem so can't be of much help, but you will find many knowledgeable folks here who should be able to help. Welcome to TDK! What is your kitty's name ?

Welcome to TDK Chat Lymiecat. Does your name suggest a UK connection? Just wondering! Glad you'va taken the plunge and joined in, I can't help with any medical advice, none of my cats have (luckily) had that problem - but keep checking this thread, and maybe bump it up after the weekend when more people are about.

Hi, Lymiecat and welcome to TDK!
My kitty, Bombalurina, developed that same problem. The vet told us that some kitties are prone to impacted anal glands and that if it happens once, it might very likely happen again. As far as we knew, there really wasn't anything that could be done to prevent it. It only happened twice and then just never reoccurred, to our great relief!
Bomber was overweight and that might have contributed to the problem. I wish that I could tell you how to prevent it, but I'm afraid that I don't know. :-(
In any event, we are glad that you have found us here!

Thank you for the wonderful welcome..I love to chat about my cats..Riley is my oldest at over 7yrs..A large tortoiseshell at 18 lbs..She was brought home from our local SPCA on Monday Sept 10th 2001.He surprised me with her in the pm thinking she would help me get over my grief as Daisy Doodles had gone into surgery that am for possible lymphoma in her abdomen..She was also a rescue cat only 5yrs old when she became ill..Unfortunately, she did have cancer and I had told my husband (I am a RN) that if it was incurable, I would have my vet euthanize her while under anesthesia rather than wake her up to suffer..Long story short, Daisy was euthanized while I held her in my arms and she went across the bridge with a chunk of my heart..She was our 1st cat since we got married..As I said, later that day I came home to find my husband nervously pacing the kitchen unsure of my reaction to an 8 week old baby tortie who fit in the palm of my hand..How could I do anything but love her..Feisty, loudmouthed, spoiled big girl, queen of the bed, the chair, my lap etc..
And thats just the beginning, we have gone on to add 3 more cats but they each have their own stories -
Goes to prove - you can never replace a cat you've lost, but there's always more love for another one.

Welcome to TDK Lymiecat. They creep in on little paws and steal your heart! I am sorry for your loss of one so young, but pray that you have a long relationship with your other furbabies. I have a dog that has had surgery twice on her anal gland. With her she has to be expressed when groomed. She is a wire-haired dachshund. I have never known a cat with the problem. With the advice you can get here I would think someone has the answers. Please come to the Cafe (by day) or the Night Shift (by night) and pull up a chair and share a snuggle with a kitten or two and share your day!

Welcome Lymiecat! My cat Huey has problems with his anal glands and has to have them expressed once every six months or so. He absolutely hates it! He gets so naughty when he goes to the vet for this procedure that he has been the topic of many a lunch conversation between my vet and his partners lol! I can't bear to do it myself, I am afraid I will hurt him and its gross. Some cats are just prone. My Hoo Hoo is one of them. *sigh*

Hi Lymiecat, welcome to The Daily Kitten, the fluffiest site on the internet!
Thanks for sharing cat stories - keep them coming! I'm so sorry about your Daisy. My boys, Shaddo and Jiggs, both took a big hunk of my heart when they went to the bridge. I sure does s*** but at least our hearts are made to receive endless love for more kitties!Posted 2 years ago by JoanfromNewJersey #
