  2. I love reading mysteries and especially like ones with cats. My favorite is the Lillian Jackson Braun books. I also read Rita Mae Brown books, Carole Nelson Douglas books, Shirley Rouseau Murphy books. There are also books by Jill Churchill that I enjoy. And I'm discovering authors that I haven't read yet that I would like to see what their books are like. For a break from mysteries, I enjoy some humorous books.

  3. I love historical novels...The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon....the Amelia Peabody Series by Elizabeth Peters...anything about Elizabethan England...and modern literature, i.e., the Oprah Book Club List. And, ok, I confess...I also adore the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovitch. It's brain candy, I know, but everybody needs a break.

  7. My all time favs: Sarum and London by edward Rutherfurd ......prehistoric england and its inhabitants .....so rich in history and really gets into how the country began and forms it floows family lines all the way thru so the characters do not stay the same .... I have read everything Jean pilady has written, she has written a book on every queen of england ...the books are well written and seem more like a novel than a biography ......:) the time travelers wife ........SUCH a outstanding read very hard to put down. I could go on forever actually LOL

  8. Didn't Rita Mae Brown write the Rubyfruit Jungle? I read that when I was in high school.

I'll read just about anything by Stephen King, John Saul, Dean Koontz, Robert Ludlum, James Patterson. I also read historical romances (think knights and stuff - lol) as long as the female character doesn't let the man boss her around. One of my favorites was a time-travel novel about a woman who pretended to be a knight so nobody would take her keep away from her. I'm babbling aren't I? But I DO love to read. Two books I read every year are The Stand and A Tale of Two Cities. My two fave books ever.

  9. I love all of the 'Prey' books by John Sandford. I think his 'Certain Prey' was the BEST BOOK EVER!!!! I used to love the Sue Grafton alphabet books ('A is for Alibi, etc.) but her latest ones are filled with so much extra description that I've probably skipped half of each of the books. James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell are also among my favs.

  10. Lisa, I too love the Outlander books by Diane Gabaldon as well as the Amelia Peabody books! I love books where there is good character development and a progression of the characters if it is a series. I also love the Diane Mott Davidson books. Her main character is a caterer and she always shares the recipes that she mentions in the books at the end of each book. Cozy mystery AND cookbook.

  11. The Harry Potter series is another guilty pleasure. :)

  12. For those who like mysteries and/or historical fiction, you can't do better than to read the Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. (Ellis Peters is the nom de plume of Edith Patager.)

Cadfael is an 11th century Welsh monk in the Shrewsbury, England abbey of St. Peter and Paul, a Benedictine order abbey. He is an herbalist. He came to be a monk in his middle age after years spent on crusade in the Holy Land.

Cadfael solves all sorts of mysteries with his herbalist knowldege, worldly wisdom, powers of observation, and plain common sense. All 20 of the books in the series are excellent reads but to get started try "One Corpse Too Many."

  13. Marnet, I will have to check those out...

Caroline, I have read all Harry Potter except the last one...I just can't get into it for some reason.

Huddy's Mama and Beth : Rita Mae Brown ones are kind of mysteries and they take some getting use to reading because you get the read the animals thoughts on things through out the book. The only one of the series I didn't like so far is Murder at Monticello. I have taken pains to try and read them in order since they do kind of follow a time line...

I use to read much more but getting back into it...I kind of miss it...

Thank you for all the good ideas, now my Amazon wish list is going to get over loaded...

  14. I just ordered the "Dewey" book for our book discussion group. I checked with the libray and all the copies are out for 145 days, so if I wanted to read it, I needed to buy it...

  15. Cheri, I think (as much as I have read so far) you will be glad you did. I know at this point if I had gotten it from the library I would have taken it back to get my own copy so I could re read it when ever I want to...

  16. I recommend for the list "Under the Tuscan Sun"

  18. Jenny Linsky books by Esther Averill!

  19. Wow, favorite book? I could never ever list just one! I am a read-aholic! If they had a reader's anon I would definitely be in it. I am absolutely crazy about reading. It is a guilty pleasure of mine. I will read anything that has a cat as it's main character/storyline. I also enjoy (now that I am getting older) reading books about things that are historical in nature, ie books about the Nazi's and what they did, the KKK, and racial segregation in our country. I think it is important to read these as we must not forget these times so as not to repeat them. Working in healthcare I read a lot of books that no one else would, books about different medical conditions, etc, some self help type books to help my patients (sometimes me too!), and books about relaxation and yoga. You name it, I probably like it. Ok, I am done rambling! LOL

  20. @ Jinxedfairy:

WOO TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE! I saw the topic of this post and came here specifically to gush about how much I love that book. I have read it so many, many times. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone.

I've talked to people who said it was kind of hard to get into, but they loved it in the end. Personally, I was completely involved straight away, but you should all give it a shot. There's a movie coming out some time next year: but be warned, this is one book you definitely want to take up instead of seeing the movie.

  22. I also really like the Wicked Years series by Gregory McGuire: I haven't read any of his other books, but Wicked, Son of a Witch, and A Lion among Men are really fantastic. They're not at all what I expected: not whimsical or cute or anything like that, it's really more political than anything, but really interesting none the less.

  26. Has anyone ever read Tailchaser's Song? It came out maybe 20 years ago but is a great fiction story about cats. I even named one of my cats after a kitty in the book (Fritti.) I also like science fiction and there was a series about Ghats who were catlike companions that shared a mental bond with their special person and helped fight crime in a medievel sort of time. Can't remember the actual title of the books at this moment but they were really good stories.

  27. Who is this Jamie author? Am always looking for new reads!

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  28. I have read Tailchaser's Song! Ages ago now!

2P - can't you just visualize Jamie? I have tried to think who could play him in a movie but I can't think of anyone that hunkie!

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  29. Oh, the Outlander series is written by Diana Gabaldon, Molly. Jamie is the hero and pretty much every one who reads the books falls in love with Jamie!

Posted 2 years ago by WillowandWindismom #

  30. Yes I can WWM. I was married when I was reading the series and asked my husband if I could call him Jamie. LOL His name is James and went by Jamie for a while in his youth. Um.. absolutely not was the answer.
I cannot think of anyone suitable to play him in a movie. Can't really think of who would play Clair (that was her name right? LOL) either !
