I'm excited to hear what his reaction is, WMM. :)
It's nice to be able to get paid for work you love to do, isn't it, GD! That is a rare combination.

Good morning all. I really need to find another apartment either in my complex or somewhere else. Last night I was awoken to my downstairs neighbor letting out some sort of yell (whoohoo) and then was talking loudly and smoking with friends on his balcony. It was 11:30pm and I had gone to bed around 10:30pm. I calmly opened my window and gently said could you please lower your voices, that I was awoken to someone yelling whoohoo and that I am trying to sleep. The downstairs neighbor started yelling at me using the F-word multiple times. He started bringing up other issues (his smoking), etc. Said I was a complainer and complained too much (property manager must have told him that as she was the one who said it to me a number of months back).
I should have just closed my window but I had to say something more about how using such foul language shows no class and that all I was asking for was for him to be quiet as it was so late. So I called my property manager after this and left her a message and I am pretty sure she is going to tell me that I need to move out as I complain too much. I was so upset that it took around an hour to go to sleep and woke up this morning feeling very depressed about this and a few other things.
Now the stupid neighbor is banging things around downstairs, has multiple people smoking on his balcony and making my what should be a nice day off not so nice. I want to just enjoy the nice fresh air that we have from all the rain and wind but no I have to smell this neighbor and his friends/family cigerette smoke. This guy is always home now even though he seems to work and smoking a lot more. I think he gets up around 5am, has a smoke and goes to work around 6am and is home by 4pm and as soon as I get home and go open my sliding door to my balcony he goes out and smokes (to be crude but it is like a pissing match with this guy).
I need to go to my doctor to see if she can give me some sort of note stating his smoking is starting to effect my health. If I were able to get that and give it to the doctor, the property manager could be liable for this. More than likely she would make it my fault just like she has with other issues (when it is the other tenant causing the issue).
Am I suppose to put up with the smoking and noise just because we live in an apartment complex? Because that is what the property manager is more than likely going to say that to me and that I should move if I don't like it here. She more than likely is going to protect the guy downstairs since she is best friends with the guy.
Sorry to vent here but my family won't want to hear it.

Yep - and only one week a year :)
I volunteered there the last 5 years and worked so much that this year when the lady who used to be in charge of transportation said she needed to step back (mostly), she thought I would do well taking over for her. Sometimes hard work pays off!
Leaving for the gym in 20 minutes. Should be interesting to see how the bartender is doing on her first day!
Oh, Karin, that sucks! I'm having some trouble here as well and brought it up with the landlord. Isn't doing any good.
I hope you can find another apartment as it seem there is a lot of issues with noise making, smoking etc. where you are now. That's no way to live.
((Hugs))
Hi, SMM. Is the smoke coming through your vents or through an open window or door? If it is coming in from an open window or door, it might help to point a fan at the window to lessen the amount of smoke you get. That isn't much of a solution, but the alternative would be to close the windows/door when your neighbor is on his balcony smoking.
Sounds like a losing proposition to get in a "fluid elimination contest" with this neighbor, especially if the landlord is a friend of his. Hopefully, he will lose interest in trying to annoy you on purpose.

Thanks GD. I needed a hug. The thing is I cannot afford to move. The unit my landlord offered me three weeks ago turned out to be right next door to a guy who smoked inside his unit. So if she mentions how I turned it down, I am going to mention that I want to be away from smokers.
I really miss my place in Marin where I had no one above or below, my neighbors were hardly home and the property manager was fair and flexible. The place I live in now has been the noisest place to live in. The problem is, I like the current unit I am in as I like the floor plan and all the closet space that I have.
KW, I can use a fan when in my bedroom but the window is so large that it is just better to close the window. I need to get multiple fans for the balcony but again it is just better to close the window. Problem is when summer comes, do not want to have close windows when it is hot out. Since this guy is going out what seems like every 30 mins to have a smoke, it would get really annoying to have to go close my windows every 30 minutes.
I am really hoping that he will leave me alone too but unfortunately this guy has a huge ego being from a country where the men are more important than the women and will not let it go.
We will find out how the property manager treats me come next week. I will not be pushed around as I have rights too.

Hubby and I lived in apartments for a while. There always seemed to be issues. One neighbor was a violinist who practiced on her violin all the time. We had no complaints about noise, but she couldn't stand the music we played. Another apartment had an adjoining wall in the bedroom. There was a very sexually active couple living on the other side of the wall. That was pretty annoying. We finally moved into a two unit duplex that had an adjoining wall between the kitchens in each unit. Much better!! No one lived above us and no one below us. Heaven!

I'm so sorry SMM.... are there any places that a specifically smoke-free? That is one of the most difficult things about living in apts. Quite frankly the same is true of townhomes. My neighbors smoke... and of course they do so outside. It's not an issue now, as it's too chilly for me to open doors/windows... however, when it warms up - well, I'm not sure what I'll do.
{{SMM}}
GD - you are the busiest person I know ! LOL
Good luck with that, SMM! I hope you can work something out. I too, HATE smoking....it makes me feel like I am choking if I breathe others smoke in....sorry, don't want to offend any smokers out there...
KW, I understand you will be doing the hula with 2POP in March! We need pictures and a video :)
Hi, 2P and KH!
KH, I will be attending the Arizona Aloha Festival with 2P and I will be WATCHING her and her hula sisters dance. I will definitely take pictures and video! :D

I am a rank beginner, KH. No one would want to see me dance in public at this point, but I was inspired when I watched the advanced hula class of my hula school in their first public performance last Friday. They were amazing. I was so enthralled with watching them that I didn't take any photos!

I joined a hula school after seeing how much 2P enjoyed it and I've wanted to watch her perform for a very long time. I can't wait to meet her in person and watch her group perform. :)

KW - we both know a hula to Kawikda - I would LOVE to see your version. We'll keep that one in the living room if you wish LOL My neighbors must think I'm nuts. When the weather is warmer, I'll practice on my patio.
Katthays... not as ready as I'd like to be ! I am doing 4 numbers (3 hula, 1 Tahitian) I'm pretty comfortable with 3 of them... although my chanting needs work. The 4th one... oh dear... needs lots of practice on that one. Again - more chanting ACK ! The costumes are coming along. We put down a more strict deadline for costuming this year - I am the new costume coordinator for hula. Good thing I'm getting my hair colored tonight... the grays are showing they are a formidable entity !
Wow, KW, that is so cool you are going to hula school! I bet that is a lot of fun.
2P, there is a town that is smoke free but would involve moving and so far haven't found a place that is decent with decent rent. The place I had with my ex at least didn't allow smoking on the premises but unfortunately we seemed to have noisy neighbors. So it is either find another unit in the complex that is top floor and away from smokers or move out.
At least we are getting a good amount of rain this weekend.

Katthays - how far are you from Green Bay? or from Neenah? LOL Both have hula halaus. As does Milwaukee.
No, KW and I have spoken on the phone, but have yet to meet in person.
KW - I bought a love seat the folds out into a bed !!! You'll be the first to put it to a test....
I will dance Kawika for you, 2P. Just try not to laugh out loud! ;)
OMG, 2P. I hope you didn't buy it because of me! (Did it come with a bed kitty?) I'm going to miss my girls snuggling with me at night. lol

KW, does hula help with the waistline? Even then, it must be fun to learn a new dance. I watched the Merry Monarch Festival on TV. That alone got me wanting to learn the hula but never did follow through.

I've see it before, and on sale. That was a while back. It went on sale again... and I've wanted to upgrade from my 20 year old loveseat. You were in mind, but not just for you. :) Maybe one of my girls will snuggle with you ! lol
Oh cool ! I can't wait to see your version. I have it on CD by Mark Keali'i Ho'olmalu. That's what we are using for Festival... it's a medley of Kawika and Holo Ana 'O Kalakaua.
OH ! And one of Christi's hula sisters is very possibly moving from Hawai'i to Oregon. Gave her the info again about your halau. Whoo hoo !
Hula can help with the waistline, SMM. Anyone of any age and shape can participate in hula. I would love to get to the level of skill that my hula sisters in the advanced class have. One of them is quite large, but she was flawless in her movements. I was so impressed with them all!!
2P, do you know where in Oregon Christi's hula sister is thinking of moving to? Kumu Pekelo Day has classes in Eugene, Roseburg and is looking at Ashland, Oregon as well. He is such a great teacher.

SMM- it can definitely work on your waistline.. and your legs ! Knees bent all the time you are dancing.
I would love to see the Merry Monarch Festival in person. Really hard to get tickets ! For those who don't know -- the Merry Monarch is like the olympics of hula. The dancers are absolutely amazing. And the men !!! WOW...
Katthays - yeah, that's a bit of a drive LOL
We do make most of our costumes. Some of the accessories need to be purchased. I'm not one for trying to re-invent the wheel and start stringing leis. Those items we buy. Many of us made our own ipu heke... and I'm working on an ipu for myself as well.

If this link works, you can see both an ipu and an ipu heke.
That is what I felt 2P, when I saw the Merry Monarch Festival. My aunt had taped it and we watched it one night when I was visiting them in Hawaii back in 1997. I loved the whole show. The Maori dancers were amazing too.

I hope I get to meet Christi's hula sister when I come to Phoenix. :)

I have purchased one DVD set of the MM... it's pricey, but worth it to me. I wish I could watch it live... I'll have to see if there is video streaming on line when it's back again. It's every year, right around Easter.
Yes, many of the women are larger in size... and wow, can they move ! I watched a 500+ lb man do a hula when I was on Moloka'i. It gave me cheeken skeen (chicken skin)... amazing
