MacKenzie and Grommet have been looking forward to going to the skate rink for quite a while now. When they found out yesterday that there would be a Mardi Gras party today, they were thrilled. Both of them immediately started rummaging through their closets looking for just the right costume for the Mardi Gras celebration. Mac Kenzie selected his “Puss-N-Boots meets The Three Musketeers” costume because, as he put it to me, “the pale gray velvet jacket and white lace jabot complement his fur very well, and the feather plumes on the hat are a real hit with the lady cats!” He chose a simple black leather mask to finish his outfit. Who knew he was such a fashionista cat? Grommie, on the other hand, decided to play it safe; she chose her sleeveless, silver sequined, drop waist flapper dress with 12" long strands of silver bugle beads hanging down from the handkerchief hemline. She loves the way the bead strands sparkle and sway when she skates, and the dress lends itself to wearing many multiple strands of Mardi Gras beads. She has a little silver sequin headband with a pale gray ostrich feather to complement her dress; her Mardi Gras mask is silver leather, and she’s taking her silver skates. Both kitties are bringing large velvet sacks filled with Mardi Gras beads for all the kitties at the rink.
Once their outfits were selected and laid out for today, they insisted we spend the rest of the evening making some snacks for them to share with their friends at the rink. We made two large trays of crayfish cakes surrounding an anchovy-catnip remoulade dipping sauce; two large trays of applewood smoked salmon slices on catnip crackers topped with a dollop of cream fraiche and a dab of black caviar; and two large trays filled with whole Noriwegian sardines, jumbo shrimp, oysters on the half-shell, and langostino tails arranged around three ‘nip based sauces, including catnip tartar sauce, catnip dijon mustard sauce, and catnip catsup-horseradish sauce. Then, of course, we baked several large New Orleans style “king”cakes (I think that’s what they are called), one of which has a small “baby kitty” figurine hidden inside. The TDK kitty who gets the piece of cake with the figurine inside will be next year’s King or Queen of the Mardi Gras! The cakes have ‘nip extract and a creamy milk flavoring. Last but not least we made three large batches of ‘nip cookies. I’m also bringing some champagne for all the parents to share while we watch the kits ;-)
We've loaded up the car with all the goodies, and we're off to the rink!
