I have had an orphan kitten for about five days now,she is somewhere between 10-15 days of age. I got her home and got her on KMR formula, i have been worried basicly sence i got her that she hasent been going to the bathroom enough. the first day i had her there was nothing, just alot of pee. After the second day she started to have very small amounts of "loose" pudding type fecies. It is yellowish orange, i talked to a vet and she said thats nothing to worry about. that was all fine for a fue days, yesterday she had very very little poop and today she hasent had anything at all. I'm worried she may be constipated, i talked to a vet because i was concirned about worms because her belly is getting pritty round, but they said that it wasnt in the best intrest of the kittne to treat her at her age. So now i am kind of at a stand still. I am stimulating her before and after feeding, and often wake her up to try to get some poop, no luck yet im keeping my fingers crossed, does anyone have any advice?

Welcome to TDK, Liz. Bless you for adopting your sweet baby; I don't have any suggestions other that what you're already doing, but, there are many people who are more knowledgable here on TDK ~ just keep checking back on this thread and I'm sure you'll get some additional advice and suggestions. It's very good that you already have a vet you can consult! That's a big help and I wouldn't hesitate to contact the vet again, or take the kitten in for an appointment if things don't improve very soon. Good luck, and keep us updated! {{Liz}}

You might want to call another vet. Her young age isn't that good a reason to not want to treat her.

Hi there..you're story sounds so familiar. I have a 5 1/2 week old orphaned kitten who I raised from birth. I have never done this before so I'm learning as I go. I work at a vet clinic so thankfully I've had tons of great advice.
He also had really loose poops that were yellowish in color like you are describing for about a week. When I switched him to powdered KMR he got horribly constipated within days and had 3 enemas over about a week before I finally switched him back to the liquid KMR. Then he got diarrhea, which I dealt with for several weeks until finally I got the right balance of powdered KMR and liquid. I do one or two bottles of powdered KMR a day and the rest liquid. The stuff is ridiculously expensive, unfortunately. I bought 10 cans to begin with and a can of the powdered and I just had to buy 5 more cans because we are out and he is not showing any signs of interest in big boy food at all.
Mine was about the same age as yours when his constipation started. He didn't poop at all for a day or two and his belly got really hard and bloated, then when he finally did poop the feces was rock hard and dry. I would definitely say if your kitten doesn't produce any poop within 48 hours or so then it is time to be concerned. At that age they really produce a small amount of stool in comparison to the volume of food they are eating, so even a little bit is good.
Good luck!!

Okay well its been a fue hours now and still no luck. im worried that im starting to chafe her skin alittle bit from trying to stimulate her. its not red or anything, but shes crying while im doing it and that cant be good. I have allready called my vet and three other shelters and animal hospitals, one of them said she may have a "gassy stumich" from the switch from mothers milk to KMR. I dont know, its been about 24 hours now with nothing. Oh by the way im not really worried about dry hard fecies because her poo hasnt really changed sence i have had her, and every now and then a little tiny drop will come out thats the same. does anyone know if worms can be very advanced and life threatening in the fue days that shes been alive?
Thank you all for the information you gave me i definatly not expecting anything by tonite, and your all so nice and helpfull. -

Please see another vet; there could be something seriously wrong with this kitten that's not worms. Doublecheck diet with the vet; bring containers of the milk replacer you're using. Some kittens experience a big difference depending on whether you're using a dry formula, reconstituted, or a wet formula ready to use straight from the can. Doublecheck also the quantity you're feeding with the vet.
Use a warm, sopping washcloth for stimulation before & after feeding, but be very gentle; stimulate in a circular motion over all the genitals.
You may be able to use a supplement like Bene-Bac, which helps repopulate the intestinal flora.
Please don't hesitate to see a different vet. Problems with peeing, pooping, or eating can easily harm an unweaned kitten if they go on too long. Good luck!

I am yet to bring her to a vet. i have been calling multiple vets for difrent opinions, i basicly can not take her to a vet because i cant afford it. i have a woman that is willing to give me dewormer when she is 3 weeks old, she is also willing to give her shots and spay her free of cost, she owns a pet overpopulation clinic and she wants to help me. She really doesnt know what to do about the constipation and neather does any vet i call.

OOOOHHHHH LIZ! I wish I knew what you could do for your baby! Is that her in your avatar? I am in Illinois, are you anywhere close? If you were I would be happy to take you and your baby to the vet. It would my pleasure to help you out. I understand that sometimes we all need a helping hand. I don't want your baby to suffer and I don't want you to feel like you can't help her. Keep doing what you are doing and I will pray for you!

Liz, your kitten looks very sweet! Did you get her from a shelter? If you did, the shelter might have a vet who would examine her as part of the adoption process. What about the person who wants to help you at the pet overpopulation clinic? Is that clinic associated with a vet? You might be able to work out a reduced payment or payment plan with a vet if you tell the vet that this is a rescue.
Sending white light and positive energy your way that your kitten starts eliminating properly. (This may be one of a very few websites that celebrates poop when it happens!!)

Yes that is very nice of you, thank you so much. unforunatly i no where around you but i really do aprechiate the offer.
The kitten in the picture is MY cat Skiff when i first got him about two years ago. He was a feral cat aswell.
The kitten im botel feeding now is much younger im guessing about 2 weeks, i have had her for one full week, its going on three days now with no poop. The last vet that i talked to sugested light karo syrup. i tryed giving her some last nite, mixed with water. It was a small amount, but it had no effect at all. does anyone have any thoughts on light karo syrup or have any other ideas or know if constipation can be due to worms?
i didnt get the kitten from a shelter my friend found her outside in the rain she was wet and cold. Her belly is getting to big for my liking i dont know if its because shes not pooping or its becaue of worms. The woman and the shelter that is helping me is not a vet, she works with some vets and techs. i have been talking talking to them, i havent been able to talk with her over the weekend but im going to call her tomorow. I have been tryin everything i can think of, running her bum under warm water wraping her lower half in warm steamy towels i was also told to try some olive oil, anyone have any thoughts on that? -
Are you sure the kitten has worms? Have you seen worms on its rear end? I don't know if worms cause constipation, but they do deprive cats of the nutrition they would otherwise be getting from their food.
I've seen others here recommend a bit of plain canned pumpkin to their constipated cats to help their systems get moving again. If you decide to try this, don't get the kind that has spices in it.
Skiff is a cute kit. He appears to be a kitten in the photo in your avatar.

No i am not sure that she has worms. i know that the mother cat had worms last year and they treated her for it, i have no idea if she got them agin and they were passed thru the mothers milk that she got. I do know that it looks like, to me, that she has a wormy belly. i beleve i read online that it can cause issues with the lower bowels i dont know if that is true or if that is what is happending, but sence i have had her she hasnt had a "decent poop" in my opinion.
P.S. skiff says thank you, he thinks so too lol -
There is also a condition called mega colon which makes it difficult for a cat to poop. The fecal matter collects in the oversized colon and is difficult to pass out of the body.
I would think that if your kitten had worms you would see them near the anus even without bowel movements. They look like little wiggly grains of white rice. (Sorry if I'm telling you things you already know!)

I've seen hookworms in fresh water fish before. They are very different, aren't they!
I just found this website that talks about the various kinds of worms found in kittens and adult cats: http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-63.htm
It cautions not to use over the counter dewormers without the advice of a vet.

Are there "no-kill" shelters in your area that could take this kitten and get it examined by a vet? If vet care is not something you can afford at this time, it might be kinder to take the kitten to a shelter that will not kill her, but can get her treated. That may seem harsh, but I don't know how you can diagnose and/or treat this on your own without a vet due to her young age.
I will think positive thoughts for poop to appear very soon!! Please keep posting. :)

Well thank you for the link. i honestly dont know what the problem is it might be some kind of worms or it might be somthing elts. unfortunatly i can not afford to bring her to a vet to find out. i think i sould probably bring her to a shelter so that she can get medical treatment that i cant afford to give to her.
-
It's a hard decision to make. Kittens wrap one around their tiny paws almost instantly! Perhaps a shelter would allow you to foster her in return for helping you treat her problem, whatever it might be. I'm sorry to not be able to do more to help fix this. Bless you for doing your best for her. :)

Sorry to hear there has been no poop yet. If you can't afford to take her to a vet maybe giving her to a shelter would be a good idea. I hate to say that but if she doesn't poop soon she may die. Is she still eating? Are you feeding powdered or liquid KMR? Have you ever given an enema before? A little warm water may just clean things out, but I wouldn't recommend it if you've never done it before as that can be fatal as well if done incorrectly or in a very ill kitten, especially that young.
There are lots of different types of worms and they usually cause diarrhea not constipation. She very well may have worms but I would think the chances that they are causing her constipation would be slim.

okay well I called a shelter and had a long conversation with the woman that owns it. that was yesterday, she told me to give her two days, and if she hadent pooped or she stoped eating to bring her rite in and they would take her. they told me that sence i had allready found a home for her, and i had appointments to get her spayed and get her her shots that she had a much better chance of living a happy life if they didnt take her. they also told me to try using a thermomiter with some a good amount of vaseline on it, to insiert it a very little bit, mostly so that if it was a hard dry poop that it would be lubricated and wouldent hurt her when she tryed to poo. Well i did that yesterday, and i have been giving her a table spoon of water after every bottel, and i am delighted to tell you all that about an hour ago after her bottel she had a (small) but very healthy looking poop. it wasnt dry, it wasnt diarea it was soft and a nice color. i am thrilled to say the least. it wasnt much poop at all but atleast its rite there ready to come out and not like blocked up in her intestens. im letting her sleep for an hour or so then im going to try the thermomitor trick. i called the shelter and she was delighted as well. Hopefully after her next bottel she will poop all over me haha, never thought i would ever be begging a little kitten to poop on me. Thank you all for being saportive and so caring.

Yay for poop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
That is great news!! *doing a happy dance*
Was there any "evidence" of worms?
Posted 2 years ago by Kitten Whisperer #

Still havent seen any worms. The only reason i thought that she may have them is because i know her mother has had them atleast once before, and because her belly is so rounded. I also talked to a vet about that and they told me she probably has a "gassy" belly, and i am finding that to be somewhat true cause shes a little burping macheen. she is going to get checked out in about a week and a half so ill know by then.
-
Tremendous! You are taking great care of this little one. Does she have a name yet? :)
Posted 2 years ago by Kitten Whisperer #

Well rite now im calling her Vivian, because that is the name of the woman that is going to spay her and give her her shots for free, and everytime i call her i allways seem to forget her name. so hopefully ill remember from now on.
She is probably gonna get a new name when she gets to her new home, the girl that im giving her to is so excited shes got a list of names allready -
YAY FOR POOP! She is adorable and you are wonderful for all you have done for her! I would have been happy to have helped had you lived closer! I was gonna be a vet but I couldn't do it, I realized it made me too sad to have to put puppies and kitties to sleep. I love them too much!
