  1. I was just wondering if anyone out there feels that there is any truth in the old furry tale that a cat can change personality after being spayed. I have been a cat person for most of my life, and always spayed them when they were around 6 months old (they have all been female), but when I think back to my last old girl, Lolie, it is just possible that she changed a little after the operation. She was always playful and affectionate as a tiny kitten, but this trait diminished after she was spayed. Of course it didn't diminish my complete adoration of her, but she could be pretty humourless (though she was a tortie...) The thing is, little miso is due to be spayed quite soon, and she is such fun and so very affectionate right now. As she is to be an indoor girl, I'm just throwing the question out there - could her darling character alter after the op? And is it advisable to spay even indoor cats, because of the caterwauling, hormonal angst and other behaviour that comes with being in heat?

  2. From everything I have heard, spaying or neutering makes for a much nicer animal...calmer....yes, they might get lazier, thus put on weight. All of my animals have always been spayed/neutered. I do remember my one cat, Rosie, who was spayed, but apparently the vet left a small piece of ovary in(found this out later) because she acted up at her time and we had male Tom's perched all over our deck railing, howling to beat the band, and our Rosie along with them! I am just one of those people that believes in spaying/neutering unless you are planning on breeding them. I do remember hearing something about it being good to let a female have one litter, then have her spayed...but that could just be an old wives tale!!!! I could be wrong, but I almost think it was a vet that told jroc this....forgive me jroc if I am dreaming! Good luck to you in making your decision :)

  3. Personal opinion, healthwise its better for them to be spayed/neutered, human healthwise its better for the same because of the caterwauling! I think they are just like we are, some women go thru horrendous changes after surgeries, change of life, and such....some have not problems at all, and some will even be happier than pigs in mud afterwards.

  5. Elen, my husband reminded me how when he was lying on the couch, Rosie jumped up on his chest, turned around and sprayed him in the face! That is true! If that doesn't make you want to spay your kitty, nothing will...lol.

  8. hmmm, yes, have to say that's not a pleasant prospect. No, I will get miso spayed, even if she never goes out, for all of the above reasons, and also of course, because there's always a possibility she will be an indoor/outdoor cat. My other cats always went out, but I've had such heart-break when they've gone missing. All cases happily resolved, I glad to relate. Thanks!

  9. Spaying a cat has been proven to reduce the chances of her getting kitty breast cancer. If for no other reason, that makes it will worth it.
