Orphan Kitten, health questions...

  1. Four days ago I found a 3 week old kitten in my building's basement laundry room -- she was living inside the back of a washing machine (there is a big hole in the back where the wires come out). She could barely walk but was trying to approach people and crying. Someone had put out a plastic tray with newspaper in it, a dish of water, and another food dish that I suspect had cow milk in it. The food dish was pushed over, but the other two were clearly too tall for the kitten to access.

There were no other kittens or adult cats around (I waited about 3 hours). However our basement always smells like cat pee, there are feral cats everywhere because the super leaves out food and water for them. (Obviously this isn't good for anybody, but we're working on that).

Anyway, we snagged that kitten and brought her upstairs. She is isolated in the bathroom because we have a 17 year old cat and don't want to expose her to any bacteria and germs. Grandma cat is not too excited about this recent development, but so far she's hanging in there.

OK, now about my kitten's health (if you're still with me)... She was definitely dehydrated when we found her (see for yourself: http://www.flickr.com/photos/treether/3340552614/).

She was strong enough to gobble down kitten formula, and three days later she looks like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/treether/3341168865/.

She's had diarrhea since we found her but recently it's getting more solid -- kind of half/half. She is crying when she poos and pees and she has "donut butt" but it's not red and it seems to go down in between poos.

We took her to the vet the day after we found her and the vet didn't seem worried. She said the kitten was too young for worm medicine and to bring her back in 3 weeks. Given that it's been 2 days since then and she still has some diarrhea and her butt is puffy, do any kitten experts think we should bring her back in to the vet? Is it really not safe for 3-4 week old kittens to get worm meds? If it was cow's milk that gave her the runs (or for that matter any other gross stuff she ate in the basement), would it still be affecting her 3 days later?

I know every cat is different, but I'm just second-guessing this vet's advice. She was from a clinic that I've been going to for years, but she was a new vet I'd never met before.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks for reading this!

  2. Hi Treether, your kitten looks much better,a change of diet and eating who knows what in the basement could definitely still be bothering her. I would hold off on the worm meds like the vet suggested though.
    Thanks for rescuing this baby.

  3. When I rescued my kitten, he was 4 weeks old and by about 5 weeks or a little sooner, he was able to use the litter box, but his diarrhea didn't go away until he was about 6 weeks old. I just made sure he was hydrated and comfortable and once he was off the formula entirely, he's only had diarrhea once since and that was my fault for changing his food too quickly and that last about a week. I don't know anything professionally, but that's what happened with mine, and he's now a healthy 6 month old. Good luck with the baby!!

  4. Welcome to TDK, Treether! Your new kitty is darling! Are you stimulating her little rear end gently after you feed her? Or, is she old enough to pee/poop without 'help'?
Have you tried suplementing the KMR with a small amount of strained baby food meat (I've had great success with Gerbers Strained liver or beef; just make sure it in not mixed with vegies, just the meat.) I agree with the vet & BC, try to hold off on the worm meds, if possible; but, if she's still having 'problems' in a day or two, I'd take her back to the clinic, and, see if you could schedule an appointment with one of the vets there that you know.
Give her lots of cuddles and pets ~ I am a firm believer that sincere love and affection, especially at her young age, will work miracles! Be sure to include extra affection for Grandma cat, too, and she will understand, and eventually grow to love your new kitty, too.

    Have you named her yet? {{{treether, grandma cat, and new kitten}}}

  5. Bless you so much, Treether, for rescuing this adorable baby. After just a couple of days in your care she already looks SO much better! You totally rock!

You've got great advice above, I can't really add to it. Welcome to TDK! this is a great site for kitty advice and support (and a lot of fun). We would love to hear about and see more pix of your baby as she grows!

  6. Thanks to everyone for replying so fast! Your advice sets my mind at ease.

I tried to stimulate the kitten the first night, and she was kind of like "whatever." That night she pooped on her own and she's been very careful to do it away from her sleeping area. We have a separate bath & shower, so the bath became a playpen for her -- the first night we set up a heating pad area and a cardboard box -- she turned the box into her litter area and loves the heating pad. She has some toys that she is beginning to play with... We exchanged the box for an aluminum pan with cut up newspaper and she is using it like a pro. Even when she's playing with us outside the tub, she lets us know when she wants to go to her litter pan. I never see her try to play in there. Generally she is extremely fastidious (except when she couldn't help it). The one time the pan wasn't in the tub she tried to pee down the drain.

When she goes to the bathroom (no matter what) she cries. Is that normal? She stops crying when she's done, but her bottom looks more prolapsed. After a while it starts to go away but never fully.

She has a ton of energy, but still falls down all of the time when she walks. She is much better at climbing & jumping than walking. And she is playing with us constantly. She is a tiny murderer, but we are trying to keep her from biting fingers :)

She doesn't have a name yet! We are trying to figure it out. My other, seventeen year old cat is named Vesper, and oddly enough, looks a lot like this kitten ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/treether/2276521674/in/set-72157600284231826/ ). Also weirdly, I adopted her when she was very little in early March 17 years ago, so they probably have close to the same birthday.

Thanks again for the advice & support. This kitten is ridiculous. I am kind of obsessed. I won't know if we can keep her for good until she gets her FIV/Leukemia tests and we see whether my older cat can handle her -- but that probably won't happen until after she's weaned.

  7. Welcome! Your kitten is gorgeous! She reminds me of one of my foster babies from last year, her name was a Juliet. You are doing an awesome job. Thanks for rescuing her.

  8. I'm not sure exactly what you're feeding this kitten, but it's common for there to be a little bit of digestive upset when the kitten weans from mother's milk to solid foods. I'd think about feeding her a tablespoon of canned kitten food every morning and every evening, and giving her a level half-cup of high quality dry kitten food every day. Also have down a shallow bowl of water for her, at all times. A custard dish is just about the ideal size for a kitten of her size, as long as the dish is fairly full.

As far as pooping goes, some kittens 'announce' when they're using the litter box for a while. She may be experiencing a little bit of discomfort, though. I'd have a warm, slightly damp washcloth or sturdy paper towel handy at such times, and after she's done, just gently dab her anus a couple of times with it. (This may help her learn to clean herself afterwards.) Be gentle, since she may have a little irritation.

If she has diarrhea that doesn't resolve within 24-48 hours, please take her to see the vet. Kittens that young can become seriously ill from dehydration, malnutrition, or diarrhea fairly quickly.

  9. Hi Treether, welcome to TDK! Both youngster and grandma are beautiful cats. 17 is a grand old age - we look after my mum's cat who's 19, and were worried about how he'd get on with our three who are all around 3 years old. Well, he lets them know who's in charge, and if they get too close, bops them one - he has a very powerful right hook for such an elderly gentleman!

I hope junior continues to improve, and all tests are OK so you can keep him, and we can get to know him a little better!

  10. Welcome to TDK and bless you for rescuing this little cutie.

I think it's probably worth the time to call the vet again about her little bum. It's possible she does has a little bit of prolapse from eating lord knows what and also from not having a mother to help stimulate her.

If she doesn't urgently need to be wormed, waiting is better, but the bum sounds like a second opinion may be a good idea.

  12. Oh my gosh! When I saw your pitures I almost cried! She's so adorable! I love little grey kitties! Your Vesper is so pretty too! Oh my gosh I love when people have pretty kitties! Your photos are really nice too, do you do anything special when taking the pictures?

Sorry, I'm really off topic, but I do hope all of her tests come back positive and you get to keep her! Oh man I love baby kittens! I just wish they didn't grow up so fast...

I just looked through your photos of "no name" and oh my gosh! I love http://www.flickr.com/photos/treether/3338715875/in/set-72157600284231826/ !!!
    Alright, I'm done, I promise!

  15. Welcome to TDK, Treether! I can't add to the advice but I had to add this - OMG!!!!! That is such an adorable baby kitten!! I can't wait to learn what her name is, once she reveals it to you! And sweet Grandma - you can be such a good role model to this little kitten!

Cudos, Treether, for rescuing this precious little bundle of kitten! Can't wait to hear more.

  16. Thanks for all the replies! We're taking her back to the vet tomorrow... hopefully can help her out a bit tomorrow. I'm worried that her bottom troubles are making it harder for her to walk -- her back legs seem to have some problems.

Those pictures of her were shot with a canon digital rebel and a 50mm lens (it's hard to keep her face in focus though!)

Here's a picture of her from today (I only took one, she didn't want to model today) http://www.flickr.com/photos/treether/3348334686/

Does anyone know of good teething toys for her? Ones that are better/more desirable than my fingers and electrical cords?

This was interesting , and recommended plastic straws - inexpensive and accesible. My cats are grown and still love straws.
She looks amazingly beautiful, hopefully the vet can help her behind. Until you think of a name I'm going to think of her as Juliet!

  18. Treether, definitely mention any difficulties your kitten is having when you visit the vet. She may have some mobility issues that you can work on. (I have helped raise kittens with wobbly kitten syndrome.)

Regarding the diarrhea, you might try adding a little cooked, plain white rice mashed into the canned kitten food. Also, you might wish to add a bit of Pedialyte to the kitten's canned food, to help replace electrolytes.

Please let us know what the vet thinks is going on with your utterly adorable kitten! Have you come any closer to figuring out a good name for her?

  19. She is unbelievably cute! She should be the daily kitten....maybe the name, Hope, would suit her...she certainly found hope with you :))))

  23. What a cutie your baby is! And Vesper is a beauty.
You have gotten the best advice already, so I don't really have any more to offer, except encouragement. You really are among the very best here.
Keep doing what you have been doing. She is growing very nicely, and bless you for adopting her and bringing her into your home.
And good luck in the future.
    Peace, hugs and purrs.

  24. Thanks again or all the advice and replies.

    Kitten update:

She has a name! Lamina, but Mina and Minnie mostly. Vesper and Lamina are both latin words -- vesper means evening and lamina means ghost. I didn't come up with it on my own, and thanks for all the suggestions. Mina really seems to fit her.

We took her back to our regular vet, who gave her a much more thorough exam (she kept thinking of things to do because she didn't want to let Mina go!). The vet said she's very small for her age. She thought the kitten might have developed a cold and decided to give her worm meds, antibiotics, and an immune system booster. She told us to start feeding her Hills I/D, which the kitten loves although she doesn't seem to want to eat it without us feeding it to her.

The vet also said she can't be tested for FIV/Leukemia for 3 more weeks. We don't want the older cat to meet her until we are sure, but it's OK because we also want to introduce them very slowly. Vesper is much less stressed as long as we remember to give her alpha kitty treatment!

We love this vet because she saved our older cat's life after 2 other vets couldn't find anything wrong with her.

So a brief search tells me the internet thinks Hill's is junk food? We will switch over to wellness tomorrow, which is what my other cat eats (aside from the occasional fancy feast). I'm also wondering if I should give her some plain yogurt -- I found lactose-free plain yogurt with Acidophilus.

Here are some photos from dinner. She's pretty sloppy!
