Advice needed please !!

  1. Yesterday i found an orphan kitten, his eyes are still closed and he is so tiny, i found him at work in the boiler room,
i took the kitten with me home, first i took the kitten to the vet for a check... he told me that he is about 5 days old..
i got him the milk formula, and the bottle... he is eating ok, but what am concerns me is the quantity i should feed him, is 10-ml per 2 hours ok ? is it alot for a 6 days age baby or a little.. i was doing a research how to take of it.. i found out that yellowish poop is not good, what should i do? am doing everything, stimulating him after every feed, rubbing his stomach, giving him love.. and keeping him warm.. i just want to know if anyone can give me an advice bout the feeding procedure how to handle him and cary him and how much quantity is the best per bottle .. please am worried.. this is my first time i have an orphan kitten (he is soooo cute) and am getting attached to him !

  2. Hi Simsim, welcome to TDK. Weekends can be a little slow here, so please keep checking back - I'm no expert on raising such young kittens, but a number of TDKers have a lot of experience in this area, and will be able to help you.

Sounds like you're doing a great job so far anyway, please keep us posted on how you're getting on.

  4. Hi Simsim. I have no experience with this but I know others do. Anncetera, tigerlilly...I know there are others. It sounds like you are doing wonderfully. Not many people know to do even what you are doing. I hope you can keep this precious boy! please keep us updated on his condition.

  8. Oh SimSim, what a wonderful person you are! You are doing great! Did the vet not say how much to give your "baby"? I hope that they gave you some guidelines cause that is a little guy! Yes, there are definitely some folks here that can help with all you need. But the weekends are a hit and/or miss. Gosh, please keep us updated on your little fellow, we are all a bunch of worry-warts on here and will keep bugging you on how he is. I wouldn't worry TOO much about his poop quite yet until you get all the feeding down right. Then I would be more concerned. Just give him lots of love and keep him warm! Hugs your way!

  9. Hi, I'm the author of the other thread about orphaned kittens from a week ago. I know how anxious you must feel! Your kitten must be so tiny! I fed my kitten following this guide at first: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2139&aid=912 but she generally let me know when she was full -- her sucking would get weaker and her tummy would be round. When she was about 3 weeks old she was eating around 1.5-2 tablespoons every four hours. Someone else here who has fostered more kittens might have a better guideline...

I would definitely bring the kitten back to the vet if he has the runs in a day or gets dehydrated. He's very lucky to find you!

  10. Hi there..I just went through the same thing. I got my kitten at 3 days old, and he will be 8 weeks old now in just a few days :) 10mL per feeding sounds about right. Do you know how much he weighs? He should be eating about 30 ml per 4 grams of bodyweight per day spaced out into about every 1 1/2 to 2 hour feedings. Also mine had yellowish colored poop until he was a few weeks old and did just fine. His bowels were all kinds of screwed up until he started eating real food. As long as he is pooping every day or every other day and urinating normally I think that proper hydration is the biggest deal with a kitten that small.

As far as handling, he will want to sleep during the time he is not eating. Get him a box or basket and put a bunch of towels with a heating pad on low in the bottom or some gel packs you can warm in the microwave to keep him warm (make sure they are not too hot!). Also get him a little stuffed animal to snuggle up to when you are not holding him. I sprayed some feliway on a beanie baby kitten for mine when he was tiny and he loved it. He still loves it, even though he is about 3 times it's size lol.

PS..don't think for a second you'll be able to give him up after he's weaned ;) That was my plan too and I am totally head over heels :)

  11. Simsim, it sounds like you're doing great! At such a young age, the kitten should be fed about every 3 hours. If you can get up for a middle-of-the-night feeding, great; if not, you'll need to do one feeding right before you go to bed, and one first thing in the morning.

Kittens this age normally cuddle with their mama and their siblings a lot to stay warm, and for stimulation. They can't control their own body temperature. Make sure he or she is clean, dry, and comfortably warm and protected from drafts.

They also can't pee or poop on their own. A warm, barely damp washcloth rubbed gently in a circular motion over the genitals and anus will stimulate peeing and pooping activity. Try either immediately before or after nursing.

Good thing you visited the vet! Some basic information on raising kittens is found at:

  19. I love Nugget! (especially if he's just a little nugget of love!)

Go to edit your profile and then click on the gravatar site. That will lead you through uploading a picture for your avatar. Good luck, can't wait to see a picture of your little Nugget!

  20. Oliver if a boy or Annie if a girl since those are quintessential orphan names.

    Posted 3 years ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  21. Nugget is a great name!!!

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  22. Yep, I go with Oliver too :)

Posted 3 years ago by SammyandOliversmama #

  23. I just read your post! Oh my gosh! Nugget's so lucky to have you! I can't imagine caring for a 5-DAY-old baby! You're a great person!! I see it's been 5 days since your post, so does that make Nugget around 11 days old now??
    How's he doing!?
If you're having trouble with putting a picture as your avatar (I had a ton of trouble doing it for some reason) you should try uploading some pictures to photobucket (or similar photo site) and post us some links so we can see the little guy!!!

And I agree with TaraRose, it's pretty much impossible to spend so much time with a baby in need (mine was 3 weeks when I got him) and try to give them away... hehehe I love kittens, and I want to see Nugget!!

  24. NUGGET NUGGET NUGGET! We want to see Nugget! There is no way you will be able to give him up! Please post a Nugget picture soon. You are such a good person and taking Nugget to work with you to keep your eye on him. Yay, Nugget is growing up so fast!

  25. Nugget is a great name! Well done AV, good suggestion!

Simsim, you're doing a fantastic job looking after little Nugget, there's no way you'll be able to give him up - welcome to the crazy world of being owned by a cat! :o)

  26. I noticed somthing that you said in your first post about yellow poop. Yello poop is perfectly normal, all kittens poo is alteast alittle yellow when they are on just formula, the main thing you need to worry about with kitten poo is texture, diahrea or very hard dry poo are big problems, colors to worry about are white, dark brown/black orange or obviously redish (blood) so keep your fingers crossed that you keep getting brownish/mustard toothpaste poops! goodluck!!
