A house guest, and a problem

  1. My boyfriend and I just got back to our apartment after a weekend away, and just brought our cats home (they'd been away for over two weeks). So guess what appears as we are unloading the car? A small, young, calico/gray kitty who is friendly as all get out and, according to the neighbors, has been wandering around the area for a couple of days.

She is currently sequestered in the bedroom, but this is going to be a problem soon, because our cats like to roam about the apartment as they please and she is going to need a litterbox soon, given the way she snarfed down the food and water we gave her.

    Any advice?

  2. looks like a sweet kitty needs you and picked you out. Do you have an another litter box you can put in there until you decide what to do.

  3. Sounds like a keeper to me :). I suggest keepingn her in a room with a litter box until gradual introductions can be made.

  4. Only thing I can think of is to find something to use as a temporary litter box, and start searching the lost and found ads. Maybe she is somebody's lost little baby.

  5. Gradual introductions would have been nice ... but Grumpy already discovered our secret. Snake's being very good, though, and being very calm toward our guest.

I'll check the want ads and call the shelters in town in the morning to see if anyone has contacted them. I'm hoping she's just lost, and hasn't been abandoned.

  6. Keep her (and us) in your thoughts and prayers, though. We're currently calling her Topaz. Just because.

  7. Well, she used the litter box, and she seems to be OK with Snake. He's being very calm and very slow in approaching her -- he's a really good cat. Spook and Grumpy are being kept away from the fluffy little camo cat.

  8. I loove the name Topaz. Sounds like she's a gem of a kitty!

  9. If weather permits, she should probably have a bath. Being out and on her own for several days, she may have picked up fleas, which you don't want indoors. I would also worry about exposing her to your other cats due to diseases, etc. I'm sure they're up to date on shots, etc., but Topaz may not be as well protected.

  10. You might have a new baby :-)

  11. Yep, I think you have a new baby. Concats, Catherine. When Oliver walked into our life we kept him separated till he saw our vet and then gradual introduction and it went quite smoothly. Good luck with Topaz (I love the name, too).

  12. awww Cath. I think you have a new baby too. Topaz sounds like a keeper and we can't wait to see pictures :)

  13. I wish I had thought about some of these things last night (the bath, the vaccinations). Well, wish us luck today!

  14. Ohhhh, another baby! Love the name, too! Just when you think your life is all settled, in walks a little furball that needs you!

  15. Something tells me that all of you will do fine. Snake found a friend, and Grumpy and Spook will come around in time. And you've got a new baby cat!

Gradual introductions are very nice to have, but since they aren't trying to kill each other, things will only get better.

After four years, Rotley and Ruggles are getting along.

  18. The biggest problem is, I don't know how I'm going to be able to afford to keep her ...

  19. Do you have any pictures??

    Posted 1 year ago by 2bpurring #

  20. No pictures yet. I'll try to get some tonight.

    Posted 1 year ago by Cats4Cats #

  21. Thanks!

  22. OK, her pictures are up on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/27232268@N06/?saved=1

They should be the first four pictures you see. I'm calling her Topaz, and my boyfriend is calling her Camo.

I would be willing to drive her anywhere in Texas (or Oklahoma, Louisiana or Arkansas, for that matter) to find her a good home.

  26. A dilute tortie? She must be loved by someone, hope you can find her owner.

  27. what a pretty kitty. wow !! i love her name !! if you can't find the owner keep her !!

Posted 1 year ago by beth #

  28. Well, I have asked around my apartment and called up both shelters, and no one knows of anyone looking for the little girl. In fact, she's been hanging out at my apartment complex for a few days now.

I don't know if it's possible for me to keep her, but I can't stomach the thought of dropping her off at a shelter. A co-worker of mine who is plugged-in to the local pet-friendly, pet-welfare community is going to see if any of her contacts need a sweet baby to love.

  29. Cat...maybe a few picture posters thru-out the neighborhood would alert the 'owners' of sweet Topaz (if she wasn't abandoned)?

Posted 1 year ago by feral #

  30. OMG, she's a tortie, my favorite. I have 3 torties, they rock!
