Beach or Mountains?

(72 posts)
  1. When you want to get away..... really relax and enjoy yourself - which do you prefer? Beach or the Mountains?

I grew up here in Fla. on the beach, I've always thought of the beach as my favorite "get away", and always thought I'd retire here..... until

....in 2006 we bought a home in the NC mountains.......now I think I'm changing my mind......I can feel my spirits lift everytime we start the drive up the mountain.....I'm happy for days just doing nothing, and time seems to go slower there..... I'm much less stressed, and feel more inspired to paint, write, etc........

just wonder what others find as their most peaceful, desirable place to live.... might not be either... might be somewhere else.... I'd love to hear your opinions!

  2. Hubby and I like to go to the outer banks of North Carolina. You can drive to beaches where you can have a mile to yourself, not including the birds, fish, crabs, etc. It's so beautiful and we really relax, huddled under our umbrella. I burn really easily so I've got the hat on and the beach towel covering anything that's not under the umbrella.
I live in the mountains, and throughout the year, it's a vacation-like atmosphere. Perhaps it's because our lake community is just that, a lake community that used to be summer only, but about 98% year-rounders now. Sure it's New Jersey, and doesn't compare to the incredible mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but with our new level on the house we have some really nice views of the mountains.
AV, you may be on to something. Perhaps we should trade houses for vacation! With the recession, you hear a lot more about bartering...

  3. If I had to choose, the mountains for sure!

  4. I grew up in Orlando and the favorite closest beach to us was Cocoa Beach, and now I live in Colorado, with the mountains only a hop, skip and a jump away. I loved being at the beach and I love being in the mountains. Ideally, Richard and I both want to spend 6 months at the beach and 6 months in the mountains, but realistically.... that ain't gonna happen anytime soon! When we moved back to Orlando for 5 years in the '90's we didn't miss the mountains as much as we did the beach when we returned to Colorado. But one thing we do miss alot - rain! It doesn't rain as much up here and if we had a rainy day we would just pray for it to storm! Nothing is as relaxing as hearing the rain fall. Even when it messes up your camping trip!

  5. I love both for different reasons. I spent the best 6 years of my childhood in East Tennessee in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains and we still have family property just outside of Sevierville. I love swimming in the mountain rivers and hanging at the lake and running the fire roads looking for the last of the Mountain Laurel. I am a life long camper and hiker. There is peace in "them thar" hills and I am convinced that God himself vacations there!

That being said... I also love the beach. Living in a land-locked state gives me an appreciation for the vastness of the ocean and its calming influence and of course for all the seafood I can stuff into my face during a week at the Beach.

  6. There is not a second thought on this one! MOUNTAINS!!! From the Bavarian Alps to Mt. Lemon, my favorite places all involve mountains. Some day I hope to live on a mountain in Ruidoso--they are pretty little but I'll take them just the same!

  7. .... I'm really becoming a mountain convert fast!!.....the older I get, the less and less I go to the beach - don't want to get any sun on me (I'm very fair), can't swim in a pool (allergic to cholorine!), like to swim in the ocean, but it makes my skin itch (salt).... red tide is a major problem these days.......

oh, and Joan - the Blue Ridge Parkway is in my back yard!......

  8. And don't forget - New Smyrna Beach is the shark-bite capitol of the world! I can't tell you how many times I have been in that ocean and have never seen a shark! When we read that about New Smyrna we just laugh, but I know it's got to be true and that's not funny, but gee whiz!

  9. Beach is good for basking in the sun, like the cats do.

Mountains are better for quiet. Deep fundamental quiet like few others places on earth. So quiet you'll wake up in the middle of the night wondering where everyone went.

  10. That is why I love living on the Great Lakes. As we say, there is nothing in there that can eat you.

I tend to be a beach person, but that is because I am very water oriented. I sail, so I spend alot of time on the water in the summer. I used to spend much of my summer in Northern Michigan (not so much anymore) and I sort of feel like that is a nice combination of the two - no mountains, but nice big hills with many inland lakes, great hiking trails, and nice camping spots - and very close to Lake Michigan if you need a beach fix.

  11. I live in Iowa...anywhere that isn't covered in snow and ice in the winter or hot and humid in the summer is a "vacation" spot for us. Usually that means we just stay home with our HEAT/AC cranked up, eat fatty food, drink beer, and watch TV -- that is when we are not working our butts off to stay employed and keep our ONLY home from foreclosure. Vacation? Vacation HOME? Get-Away? No such thing!

  12. Beach. Sun. Book. Heaven... :o)

  13. Beach for me too! S. Ca. preferably! =)

Posted 2 years ago by Karenopa #

  14. Same here CR, but if we could do it, we would be working our butts off in Florida for the winter (we paint houses for a living) and then here in Colorado for the summer - we just need to get a travel trailer to live in and then camp in all our family and friends yards in both states!

  15. Damn, CatRancher...you said it! I have been on one "proper" vacation since 1983. Seriously. (I don't do the relaxing thing too well, anyway.)

  16. Mountains!!!

  17. ...and you're a Fla. girl too!!!......(I mean currently)... did they have mountains where you grew up in Denmark? if so, what were they like?

Posted 2 years ago by AV #

  18. Nope, no mountains in Denmark. Denmark is a very flat country, like The Netherlands. I used to go on vacations with my parents all over Europe growing up and particularly enjoyed the mountains in Norway and Sweden.
Maybe I just prefer the mountains, because I've got the beach right here (well, it takes about 15 minutes to get there). The mountains have always had a sort of relaxing, tranquil feeling to me, though.

  19. Mountains! I love the mountains, I grew up here in flat florida and at the beach a lot so when we first started going to the mountains it was such an incredible experience! The air smells fresher, the water looks cleaner,I see birds I don't ordinarily see, people wave from their porch. It's neat. Listening to a babbling brook while I read is so relaxing.

  20. I guess my name says it for me "Beachcomber"; I love the beach. I live in S. California and the mountains are only a couple of hours away so I can find that piece of heaven too. I find my inner peace best when I am in nature seeing God's creatures in both places.

Posted 2 years ago by Beachcomber #

  21. I have lived in the mountains, never lived by the sea. I can find peace in both places. Different feelings in each one. Would be hard to choose ! The main ingredient would need to be seclusion for either.

  22. I can't believe I am about to say this.....now that I am getting (gulp) older, I am definitely a mountain girl for all the things mentioned above. When I was in my early 20s I thought a beach house would be all that and more for me. Now I go to the beach and I burn like a lobster and I nearly drown as a child so I don't really go IN the water (who'da thunk it, a Pisces, not swimming!). SM is so true, the Bavarian Alps are what won my over to the other side. I could sit in the mountains and refresh any day over the beach, so AV, how soon can I come to the house in the mountains???? LOL

...these are pics from my deck in NC.... I'm the worst freaking photographer... they don't begin to show how this beautiful place is!......

    (hope this link works!)

... I have some in the fall that show the leaves - breath taking!... but they're in my old computer... maybe I'll try and retrieve them tomorrow....

  24. I am packing....what time will you be over to pick me up AV?

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  25. .... maybe we can arrange a meet in NC!..... I've got 3bed/3baths...... 30 minutes north of Asheville.....

  26. Beautiful views AV!

Posted 2 years ago by Buttercup #

  27. This is one of the toughest questions you can ask me!! I love both, I don't know where I would want to live permanently. The views from your deck are awesome AV. I'm in Virginia and can be on your deck in about 8 hours! Does Cuddles accompany you to your mountain home?

Posted 2 years ago by krazikat #

  28. oooohhh Virginia is lovely! Same Appalacian Range - I'm in the Blue Ridge Part, what part goes thru where you are?...... and no, HRH Cuddles has not been to the mountains yet (she doesn't travel well), however, Abby has been there almost as much as I have. She is as good as gold, whether driving the 12 hrs. from Fla. or flying on a plane in her carrier (she gets to be with me as a carry on item).......

Posted 2 years ago by AV #

  29. I have lived in S. California..I used to go to the beach and the mountains. I have to admit, I prefer the mountains. Now that we go to W. Virginia to see the family, there is nothing like the beauty of that state with the mountains and the atmosphere.
that being said, anyone who knows me knows that my ultimate place to live is in Europe though! That can be beach or mountains :)

  30. What's a beach???

What's a mountain??? (We have highway overpasses - do those count?)

Seeing as how I don't live near either of those things, but having visited both, I will choose....

MOUNTAINS! But not those stinking desert kind. The kind with trees and stuff.
