  1. Oh, GD, I too, just caught up with this thread; god bless your XBF for being there for you! I have been taking Tagamet, Zantac, and now, Prilosec since I was about 18; I started with the prescription stuff, then as it became available OTC, I went with that. I'm sure I keep the manufacturers in business, but, it does work ~ so, give the meds a day or two to kick in, and, if you're like me, you'll be back to normal right away. I take a prilosec daily, and Zantac as needed at night if I'm having an attack. Just know you'll probably be taking the meds from now on. They work very well, so don't worry....
Coffee and spicey food is something I refuse to give up! It may kill me in the end, but at least I'll enjoy that part of my life!!

I hope you're feeling 100% better by Monday! {{{GD}}} Your friends will forgive you ~ and, they should feel guilty for not worrying about why you're not getting back to them in your usual prompt way!!

  2. Have you had anti biotics kittymom? Poor you for this going on for so long!

Posted 3 years ago by metsa #

  3. Metsa, no, no antibiotics; I've had upper GI problems since I was a teenager; (severe heartburn and hiatial hernia) it runs in the family. No one has ever suggested I take antiboitics; Should I?

  4. Well if its ulcers, then they are in the main caused by a bacterial infection. The traditional view was that it was due to diet and lifestyle, but it has actually been shown to be due to an infection. However there are many other causes of gastrointestinal troubles, such as Crohns' which has an auto immune link. There are also some that have links to genetics, and this might include susceptability to the ulcerating bacteria, possibly. So not much help there, sorry!

  5. No, not for those, Kittymom. I've got a hiatial hernia, too and take OTC Prilosec. This is just a condition that you have to learn to manage the symptoms. Antibiotics wouldn't do anything to help and could do harm in making you resistant to them if you should need them. Sometimes they are prescribed at the time of diagnosing an ulcer, if the ulcer is positive for the bacteria Heliobactus pylori. Otherwise, they aren't used.

  6. HEY! How do you guys get by with just meds? I have had two hiatal hernia OPERATIONS! I need to have another one! (pouting) NOT FAIR!

  7. Hi GD, had to run this am so couldn't get into this...I'm assuming that you will have follow up with your doc. Just wanted to make sure that you had or will have a test fro H. pylori. This is a bacteria that has been found to be the cause of many (not all) cases of heartburn, gastritis and ulcers. All the diets in the world and anti-reflux/ulcer meds will not take care of the problem if this bacterium is the culprit. The good news...if this is found to be the cause, all you need is an antibiotic course of treatment and then you can eat and drink anything you like!! Hopefull they checked this in the ER, but it's possible they did not.
Hope you are having a restful day.

  8. Thanks WWM :). I know the stuff from the science side (and not even medical science) but know nothing about medicine. My fiance ha actually been put on one of the pills of the same family as GDs last week for constant indigestion - I was telling him it was an ulcer too :).

  9. Oh, just read the above and saw that others have brought up the H pylori issue. Sorry for being the repeat info.

Posted 3 years ago by Tigerlilly #

  10. Wouldn't be Lansaprazole would it Metsa? I take that for acid indigestion, been on it for about 18 months now, it's a huge help!

  11. Hi, TL!

Metsa, ulcers just totally suck! It's amazing how much pain they can cause. When I had my two years back, the path report came back negative for H pylori. I knew that I had brought it on myself. My mom had just died, I was under tons of stress and was taking three aspirin every night to try and relax enough to sleep, and was drinking coffee by the gallon. You would think that I would have known better :-(

  12. Hi WWM! I see that you've been working overtime!

Posted 3 years ago by Tigerlilly #

  13. People in healthcare are the worst patients WWM!

    Posted 3 years ago by mollycat71 #

  14. Aye, 'tis MCW! Dereck was complaing that it was causing an increase in, uhm, gas, I'm hoping it'll settle down because he's not a good one for going to the doctor if he does need a med change.

You might well have known better generally WWM but sounds like everything was going wrong at once there ((hugs)).

Great minds TL! :D and all info to help is good info, I reckon.

  15. Please, please, please read "the Maker's Diet" by Jordan Rubin..... I was given an antibotic (never had one in my life)... and had a severe allergic reaction, that resulted in it destroying my gasterolnomic (sp?) sysem and ulimately in ultertive colitis..... it almost killed me... in 2005.... I had to fight my way back to health, but I did it!!!! I have put everything back in my diet, including hot, spicey food (you know I'm a foodie right?), ruffage, and alcohol ( I love my wine)....! it's hard, but you can do it!!!

  16. Sorry to hear this AV. It is good to be reminded that all meds have potential side effects and of course allergic reactions can be life threatening.

  17. I lost over half my stomach from my ulcers, I burned right thru my stomach. Aren't we a fun bunch!?

    Posted 3 years ago by mollycat71 #

  18. Lol MC!

Posted 3 years ago by Tigerlilly #

  19. I reckon if you took all our good bits, we might just make one complete, healthy TDKer!!! ;o)

  20. I was treated for H.pylori at the time that I had my ulcer and have been on the meds anyway for gastritis and such(Prilosec, etc),I haven't had anymore ulcers(knock wood) but I still have to watch what I eat and still take the meds. I started taking Motrin when it first came out in the lTE 80'S for a orthopedic issue and the pharmacy for my hospital gave me 800mg uncoated motrin which needless to say went right though my stomach wall.

  21. TL, it was truly a life changing experience for me!!........ I've never been sick/and or truly dibaliated in my life, and this changed everything for me.... my best friend pushed me around in a wheelchair that Christmas so I could shop for my family!!..... I really had to fight my way back to health because the Doctors were very depressing about the chances of "recovery" for colitis victums ....but I did prove them wrong... they said I would never eat a "salad" again (I eat one almost every day)... they said I couldn't stand "ruffage".... I eat "crude de tae" and more......I eat 5 star spice Thai food...... point being..... I did it! I toughed thru it, and re-taught my system to accept all foods and textures! Jordan Rubin, and his inspiration with Chron's really inspired me, and gave me the basic tools I needed to recovery..... I truly feel blessed that I have been able to come so far!

  22. Yay! well done AV!

Posted 3 years ago by metsa #

  23. How very inspiring AV. This is yet another good example of how we have to be active in our own well being.
BC , you are quite right to point out every case is different. There are many people with just one isolated case of H pylori who completely recover; and of course there are some that concurrently have GE reflux disease from other cause ( such as anatomical , as with WWM) and this can be a long term problem.

  24. I now have Warnings on all my Driver's license, health cards, etc. so people (ER & Dr. staff) know that I've had allergic reactions to the only antibotics that I've ever been given! .... I know I may be unusual..... most people have had antibotics over their life, the pink stuff, ect.... but I've really never been "sick"... no colds, no ear infections as a child, etc...... neither has any of my imediate family (mom, sis & bros, etc.)..... nor have my children... some how they have only had the chicken pox (son 6, daughter 3) but nothing else... of couse they've had the normal vacines, and are up to date on all their stuff to enter college, etc.... but we are a very unusually healthy family! Intersting to me, is that my family has severe longevity!!! The youngest any of my MOM's family has died is 90+... most of them have lived long into the 100's...... maybe I'm rambling, but I've always thought this family should be "monitored" because they are so healty and live so long!

Posted 3 years ago by AV #

  25. AV, I do have the same thing! People in my family live LONG, except for my dad who died at 70. I often wonder if they got the wrong baby at the hospital because I have everything under the sun go wrong with me. They (docs) say it is because my mom's appendix burst when she was pregnant with me and they pumped her full of antibiotics (she's allergic too). At the time she didn't yet know she was pregnant but that has contributed to my internal distress. Who would have thought my appendix would have been located under my ribs?

    Posted 3 years ago by mollycat71 #

  26. Wow,sounds like they should distill something out of your family's blood and give it to everyone else to make them more healthy AV. ;)

Posted 3 years ago by Buttercup #

  27. Who knew! apparently as long as we don't need "anything" medicimal or what, we're fine... but me, the only antibotic I've ever been given almost killed me.... not sure that's a good thing... just scary to me!

Posted 3 years ago by AV #

  28. I'm sure it was AV, I didn't mean to minimize that,I was just responding to the fact that your kids have never needed antibiotics.

Posted 3 years ago by Buttercup #

  29. ((( BC))) I know, and I appreciate your advise! .... sometimes I wonder too if I should have my kids carry warnings that they've never had antibotics, and that their MOM is allergic!.....you just never know until you're given something, and then had an adverse reaction!!!

... actually, I used to laugh with my great Aunt Nell (101) about bottling our blood and selling it as "elixier"!! she thought that was so funny!

Posted 3 years ago by AV #

  30. I went shopping!!! And spent $85.00 on 2 weeks worth of meds - yuck! It had better work!

    I got ice cream!!!
    plain bagels
    apple juice
    water
    apples
    a pear
    bananas
    mashed potatoes
    crackers
    and creamy chicken soup
Mylanta (which Dr. told me to get)

I didn't on purpose not eat for 24 hrs. just was so nauseaus I couldn't eat anything at all. They gave me something for that at the ER, too, which worked wonders. Not so much fun taking a long ride in a bumpy wheel chair when you are about to toss your cookies!

I've got one problem left right now: I NEED candy!!!!!!
No chocolate, no mints - what's a girl to do?????? :(
