So, My baby meezer Davidson went in for a surgery yesterday. He had undescended testes and they had to go look for them. It is an invasive procedure so they wanted him to be at least 16 weeks. When I picked him up yesterday, they asked me if I knew what had happened. I said No, what happened. She said that when they went in, he had not only the 2 testes, but also 2 ovaries and a uterus. He was a true hermaphrodite! He is at home recovering, he picked up a cough/sinus congestion while there, so he is seperated and unhappy about it.

MerD, don't mean to ask invasive questions, but does he have both a penis and vagina? I find hermaphrodites fascinating. Saw a documentary on the condition on one of the science channels. It's actually more common than people realize. In the past, doctors and/or parents would simply choose one or the other sex and remove the unmatched sex organs. Now there is an organization of hermaphrodites trying to get things changed so that the child is left intact until they can make their own decisions.
Did they charge you for both a spay and neuter? LOL~

I don't know if he has both P and V. His uretherea opening is low, so thats why I thought he was a boy. but upon a quick closer look this morning, it looks like both. There is an outline of a slit (v), but only a hole for the P.
He is a resuce kitten so the organizaiton paid for it, it was an extra $50-80 on top of the normal neuter. But his adoption fee is still only $80.

Maybe you should try a "unisex" name for the little one? You know, like Frances (Francis)or Sydney (Sidney)???

Wow, what an unusual kitty! I'm so glad that Davidson's been neutered and spayed, and won't have to worry about fathering... um, mothering... um, well, reproducing kittens, regardless of method!
I can't help but ponder if maybe his/her name should be Sluggo, instead (since slugs are hermaphrdodites).
This now has me wondering if Davidson is chimeric, or if he has one set of genes but developed differently in utero, or what...

Earthworms are too. And they have 16 hearts, if I recall correctly.

Here is one article that describes it in plain english, I think because both sexes were fully formed he is in the very rare and unclassifiable catagory. To really figure out what happened, we would have to see his chromosomes.

Poor little meezer baby with his cough. Even though he had spare parts, I would just go with the gender and name you gave him. Hopefully soon he will go to a loving home that will appreciate his specialness

Hermaphrodites, XXy and XXY, have male bodies but tend to exhibit various female characteristics, often adopting orphan kittens or other young. One such cat adopted a litter of mice, which it lovingly raised while gleefully hunting their relatives. Hermaphrodites are almost invariably sterile, sometime having both sets of sexual organs with neither fully developed. This is the most common of the aberrant sexual makeups.
Normal females, XX, and males, XY, are by definition the norm and vastly outnumber all other type combined. Chances are less than 1:10,000 that any given cat has a genetically aberrant sexual makeup, the most common of which is hermaphroditism, about 1:11,000 -
Best discussion I've seen on the possible variations is at Messybeast. Can only get there cached right now, but try:
Fascinating stuff.

That's right, MerD; Davidson is extra special, since he came with extra parts! (Unless chromosome typing is performed, I don't think you can really know if the kitty is genotypically a he or a she.)

Davidson could be his own twin.
It is extremely rare for conjoining to be so complete as to present as a single individual and more so for the conjoining to involve fraternal twins of the opposite sex but it has happened.
I once watched a program on the Health Chanel entitled "I am my own twin" about people with this chimera syndrome. One story was of a mother who almost lost custody of her 3 children because DNA results said she was not their mother. Only the testimony of the family physician who attended all three pregnancies and births prevented this potential travesty. The matching DNA was finally found in a portion of her liver. Another story was of an hermaphrodite.
