Help! My vet says my one year Siamese is overweight and needs to lose about 4 pounds. I have already placed her on "light" catfood and try to play with her every night. However my problem is that I have 4 other cats. While they are within acceptable weight ranges, they all want to play with the new toy and scare off Ivy! She just runs and hides when I bring out the toy. I have tried moving her to a different room but she still seems "scared" of the interactive toys. Somnetimes she will smell it but that's about it.

Have you tried a laser pointer toy? My 'too-fluffy' Squeaky girl loves it. But, like your Ivy, the other kitties also go bonkers and frighten her away. I close the others out of the bedroom and play with Squeaky. I don't know if she's actually losing weight, but she is gaining muscle tone. Of course, I give her a treat when we are done playing - I'm probably undoing all the good she gets from the exercise.

i would get her off of the 'light' cat food! i can't find the article right now so i'm going to link to another forum that i wrote part of the article on. hope thats okay! http://www.cutelittlekittens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9461
an all wet food diet is what you can do to get a cat to lose wieght. the 'light' formulas increase the wheat/corn/other plant material in the food which increases the carbs which makes a cat fat! they decrease the amount of meat protien and fat, so a cat must eat even more of the 'light' food to become full.

I have to say that it is really difficult to get a cat to lose weight. My vet said that a lb for a cat is like a human losing 10lbs. Think how hard it is for us to lose weight! I would encourage you put all your cats on a formula of food that is to help overweight cats. Also I would recommend no "free feeding" ie leaving food out all day. Measure what she and the others get and after a certain time, pick it up whether or not she is finished. Definitely work on playing with her individually in another room so you can get some quality play time in. She may be less likely to be a fraidy cat that way too! Just some thoughts, keep us posted! :) Welcome to TDK

Please be careful--her weight loss must be carefully monitored. If she loses too quickly it causes "fatty liver disease" which is mostly fatal if not treated in time. Use a food that your vet recommends.

actually, if the vet you go to is a "Science Diet Vet" i would NOT use the food that they recommend, because it would be science diet wieght loss. a few people are lucky and have vets that say to use all wet (for all cats) and good high quality brands. IMO dry food should have two meat protiens listed first (aka chicken meal and chicken but NOT by products) and wet food should have four meat protiens and either water or chicken broth as the first five ingrediants.
Science diet dry is should be used as chicken feed not cat food ;)
