  1. Aussie and NZ have been bickering siblings for a very very long time. Looks like this couple decided to voice their opinions.

Oddly enough I tried to look up their website and it's currently down. I wonder if it's kiwis wanting to see what the aussies think or maybe they got embarrassed and took the site down :)

On a side note i find it odd that a "professional couple in their late 20's" they moved from aussie to nz?! Not the best move.

  2. Airy, not being up to speed about the specific differences between Australia and NZ, why wouldn't that be a good move for them? Just wondering.... And, if they are as uphappy as it seems they are, why not just move back to Australia???? (BTW, I , too, couldn't access their website)

  3. They could just solve the whole problem by moving back to Tasmania. Can't believe they thought the sulphuric smell was 'smelly' for 2 people who claim to be professional they aren't very worldly from all appearances.

  4. Kittymom, lots of nzers every year move to australia, better work opporunities, better pay, etc... Aussies do move to NZ but it isn't as common as the other way. NZ is seen more as the laid back, raise a family type of country.
I love how they complained that Rotorua stank. That's kind of the point of rotorua as a toruist destination :)

  5. Thanks, Airy; I get it now.

  6. We seriously considered moving to NZ to retire-we researched quite a bit and found the lifestyle, the attitudes, the politics and the diversity were very much to our liking. Then found out that we would not be allowed to live there because of my disability. The health care system is so good that they don't want people moving there to take advantage of it. I see the point, but it did make me sad-it is such a beautiful country.

  7. That's such a pity Rainingwolf. J-man and say how NZ was a great place to grow up and is a great place to raise a family, but at our age (mid 20's) it's too small for us.
I had to laugh 20mins ago when i flicked channels and came accross what appeared to be another tv show with NZ on it. It was actually a 100% pure nz ad :)

  8. Ooh, the couple's blog is back up. I bet it crashed due to increased views.

  9. Just thought I should warn you all. If you read the blog and the comments be prepared for some pretty unfluffy language.
Some of it's funny, some of it's just crude and unneccessary.

  10. I think that's a great pity, RW. IMHO, NZ's immigration policies have rarely erred on the side of compassion, to put it mildly, though there has been the odd honourable exception.

Our health system is far from perfect. Many things are hopelessly underfunded, like mental health services, for instance, especially for children and teenagers, and people do die waiting for operations or spend many years in pain waiting for hip replacements. Like many things here, our health system is run on a shoestring, a good deal of Kiwi ingenuity and the dedication and goodwill of a whole lot of devoted Kiwi medical professionals.

I think one of the main problems is that, with only 4 million people in total, and a country roughly the size of England, Scotland and Wales to service, we don't actually have a big enough population (ie tax take) to pay for all the services we need.

Of course, from another perspective, the tiny population is one of our great advantages too. It's a conundrum.

  11. Just found this thread. Yesterday there was a bus load of Australian women visiting my city, they were looking to buy up low cost houses and do them up for rentals. Because of the low $NZ in comparison to the $AU it is cheaper for them to buy here. Unfortunately it does very little for NZ with the money going out of NZ back to Australia. We don't have a glut of houses here and with low cost housing being bought up for rentals it will now be even more difficult for Kiwis on lower wages to ever realise their dream to own their own home.
What can I say about the Aussie snub website? Nothing, it doesn't rate a reply.

  12. Still say they can just go back to AU if they really don't like NZ, why bring their bad attitudes to a nice place.

  13. Right on Deb. There are something like 300,000 Kiwis in Australia and now we are getting the reverse, Aussies coming over here to live because of the exchange rate and better cost of living in comparison, all things that enticed Kiwis over the ditch(Tasman Sea) to Aussie. Oh and we are greener than Aussie but then again most places are after the drought they have endured for some years.

  14. Grrrrrrrrrr, how dare they make fun of us Kiwis, we'd never it do it about them.

Had to LOL about the criminal record incident, one of Mr MS's workmates really had that happen to him. He left England telling his mates they won't see him for years, travelled through Europe to Asia. Then he flew to Australia and slightly over indulged on the plane and arrived a wee bit tiddly. When he was asked at immigration if he had a criminal record he jokingly replied that he didn't realise you still required one to get into Australia. Oh dear, wrong reply, the woman immigration officer had him on the next flight back to England. His mates were stunned to see him and couldn't believe he had been deported for a silly quip.

  16. MS, sorry I had to laugh about that comment about Austrailia. Your husband's workmate sure made an unfluffy didn't he? I honestly would much rather go to NZ than AU myself. May I ask, why do they call you guys kiwis?

    Posted 2 years ago by mollycat71 #

  17. We're called kiwis after the native bird the kiwi which is only found in nz. Not after the fruit, which is called kiwifruit in nz :)

Posted 2 years ago by Airyshone #

  18. To be honest I don't know exactly how it came about that we are called Kiwis but it is our national bird. Having said that here are 2 different opinions about the Kiwi name for New Zealanders.

  19. Ooh,ooh, I love difficult questions, Mollycat. Why are we called Kiwis? I went to my Dictionary of New Zealand English... Seems the kiwi bird was a national emblem of NZ as far back as 1899, when "bank notes, postage stamps and advertisement chromos generally have a portrait of this unholy looking bird on them". Someone else said, "a bird that cannot fly sounds almost as uncommon as a pig that can".... (The kiwi is flightless so guess that was the novelty value!)

But the main reason seems to be that some of our soldiers (the Canterbury regiment) who went to WWI had it as a regimental badge, so they were called Kiwis. It became widely known because of the giant kiwi carved into the chalk hill above the NZ camp, Sling Camp, in England, during the first world war. By the time we sent soldiers to the second world war, everyone knew us as kiwis.

  20. I love this thread! So much information, and humor, too!! Still laughing at the 'criminal record' comment ~ I could see Craig Ferguson adding that one to his monologue one night.... ;-)
